FINALLY got to go fly in the new airplane. Before yesterday, I had 15 minutes in it moving it around between local fields. Yesterday I flew it down to KEDN to visit my son at Ft Rucker. AND I finally got to push buttons on all the new toys. Foreflight and the Flightstream are epic. But I have a new question. I was able to transfer data back and forth between the 430s and the iPad easily (i.e. clearances and route), but I wasn't able to see ADS B traffic or weather on the iPad. I was able to see the traffic on the Garmins. There are so many settings/buttons on Foreflight that I may be missing something. What settings to: 1. see traffic? I'm thinking it won't do it, but I'm hopeful. 2. see weather? I suspect that I couldn't paint the weather, because there wasn't any. Low IFR, but no convective. On a related note, I flew the RNAV into KEDN, 600/2, using the coupled autopilot. Whoa. As nice as any airliner. I'm elated how well it worked. dj

The beauty of the Mooney, is that you can live in both places. Priceless.

I think I need to go head west with the autopilot on for a couple of hours and just try stuff...

This forum is great. I never even considered this, until I saw this thread. I have the two prong plug. All of the above still applies?
-
Forgot to mention, I have Foreflight on the iPad. Not opposed to Garmin Pilot, if that's needed...

Apologies in advance, but I searched and can't find the answer. I just installed the 210, along with the Garmin 345 in order to have ADS B (TCAS, weather, etc). The included Flightstream info is REALLY light (read nothing there, really). I have my iPad paired up, but haven't had a chance to see what it and I can do. I have a pair of 340s installed, one WAAS, and understand I can upload the flightplan. I also seem to recall I can DOWNLOAD wx and traffic to the iPad. I also have a previously installed XM receiver, and a third party tablet installed, but the old tablet is VERY touchy. I'd rather upload the XM stuff to the iPAD, which is new and shiny. Lots of questions, I'm sorry again. Any answers or advice? Thanks, Dave

Late to the thread (as usual, I was working...). You and I are probably very similar but I'm guessing about a decade apart. I retired in 2001 after about 20 years in all the air-to-air versions of the 15. My 23 year-old son is following me, and we have travel needs, so I just bought a 231. LOTS of considerations involved, probably too many for a post. Call me (I sent you a PM), and I'll tel you how I ended up in mine. Dave PS Just starting to learn the thing, and love it...

I'm late to the discussion, but I sat outside the hangar yesterday watching my son do some pattern work with his instructor. It made me smile every time I saw the gear come up. That's priceless...

Everything is installed and working (as far as I can tell....). Biggest problem now, is that the new suite does so much stuff, it's difficult to figure out how to do all of it. I'm going to need to take a 5 hour cross-country, just to push all the buttons. Apologies in advance: I know I saw it somewhere recently, but can't find it anymore. I have updated the Jepp stuff in my 430s, but I think it's also time to update at least one of the Garmin terrain databases. Suggestions and info about where/how best to do that, and whether I really need more than one updated, and if so which one (WAAS or non-WAAS)? thanks, dj

I just bought an 84 K 231 with a 300 hour engine, and same or better avionics for 115K. There are better deals out there.
-
I'm tagging on to follow the progress. Best of luck with the issues.
-
I just got off the phone with the Avionics guys, and it's amusing to me when I start talking about replacing stuff, their response if something like "why would you want to do that, isn't your stuff working?" I suppose that's an indication that they're not going to try and sell me on something I don't need. As opposed to everyone on here. Seriously, it looks like I'm on the right path with the 345, and the Slipstream. More to follow...
-
I think that's the plan. I'm going to call the avionics place tomorrow for a quote... Thanks again to all

That's great advice, and what I'm attempting to do with my tiny knowledge base (thanks again for the advice, my base is a smidgen bigger today). I do have a great window right now for upgrades, so I want to make the right ones. I shuttle back and forth between my home in metro-Atlanta and Northern Idaho, so I'm thinking flight above 180 is likely. I'm also going to need an iPad, so I think one of the apps will work, as far display of all the data. And it does look like the 430W will show what I need as well. The 231 will also be a platform for my son to build hours, and I might just use it for fun on pretty days. :-) First day of ground-school today on the Mooney, so I'm going to make my instructor's ears bleed with questions...
-
It's even worse for me right now, as I can roll all of this stuff into the purchase, and not have to drop a bundle on the upgrade. I'm going to need to discipline myself to avoid getting everything I'd like to have, but really don't need. Or not.

If I hadn't mentioned it before, this forum is awesome....

So, if I skip the 330 and get the 345 transponder, and iPad mini and Foreflight (or Garmin Pilot), then I'm good above 18k and have traffic and Wx?
-
More new guy questions: Looks like the 231 will pass the PPI, all good so far. But now would be a great time to make the ADS B upgrade. The plane has a Garmin GTX-327 transponder, and a Garmin 430W. I'm told that all I need now is the GDL88 box, and I'm all set. And it looks like I can get the Garmin Pilot App or the Foreflight App and see stuff (Wx and traffic) on those, as well as the 430. But it's really not clear to me.. So, Which App? Foreflight or Garmin? iPad best tablet? Mini or full-size. Tell me what you know. Thanks in advance. dj

As an F-15 guy, I loved the A-10 guys. Their job was to keep the enemy off of your backs, and my job was to keep the MiGs off of their backs.
-
That's good to know. The one I'm considering has those tanks...

I just finished reading all the stuff I could find on here about aftermarket speed brakes. I'm thinking of having them installed in the 231 I'm about to buy. I talked with Precise Flight, but wondered if anyone here has any experience with the shops in or near North Georgia, and would recommend any of them for an install?

Flying is flying, and it's all glorious! Some days I start to take it for granted, and then I watch the sun rise from the cockpit, and I'm back in awe again...

I just went back and looked at my list, and I think I woke up Jim Stevens. But I did just call you and leave a message!
