You did pretty, pretty good. I love everything about planes - flying, mechanics, gadgets, history. Thank you for the info. I can't wait to meet you in person on the next NJ Mooney Pilots fly out. I hope it will be soon. Unfortunately we have another two weeks cold, nasty and windy weather.

Thank you. Yes, I have tried to sit in the back of mu J ( on the ground) and even with my pilot seat in my most comfortable position ( I am 6'1" with long legs) there is enough leg room for nice comfy ride in the back. I really like the ergonomics of the Mooney.

Thank you for the explanation. What are advantages / disadvantages when we compare them? You don't have to elaborate on that too much. Thanks

I have one stupid question not really related to this topic but I am new in the mooney world. Which Mooneys are short body and which are long body? My is M20J.

1.You guys at Garmin should really take a closer look at the screen design as some of them is hard to read I the sun or dark of the cockpit. As some guys pointed in another forum topic there should be more contrast between the background and letters. On the Direct To page for example it is hard to read blue letters on the gray background and gray letters on the black background. 2. How about " One touch alert timer " or turn on and off preset alert instead of going through adding and editing the alerts every time you want use it. I always create and use " Switch tanks " alert but if I don't delete it it will pops on my screen in the middle of the night for many times. Then I have to create one from scratch again befor take off. Or am I missing something?

I sold my " old " GDL 39 and got new 3D. I flew it few times and I am very happy since I have never seen glass panel before. I know the Pilot App in and out. But I can't find any manual or description of the symbols and functions on the synthetic vision screen. Where can I find anything on that?

I know. I wouldn't.

I will next time.

I have practiced slow flight and stalls in my M20J today for very first time with my instructor. I did many of them today and I actually liked how the plane behaves and responses. I have tried power on, power off, clean and dirty configuration. My impression was that the stalls are pretty predictable and the plane gives plenty of sings to recognize the incoming break. The controls , air flow and engine sounds change noticeably. The stall itself was nothing really dramatic. Few times I let it drop deeper then usual recovery just to see how she drops the wing. Opposite rudder and little forward yoke did the magic. At the end I was able to recover in proximity of 100 - 150' drop. I know that to practice stalls when you expect them is different from real thing in the low altitude on the final but they should be definitely part of the PPL training too. I went through few instructors and none of them really wanted to practice them on regular basis and master them. It was more like " item checked " on the list. And that's the shame as it could teach you a lot about the plane, coordination and mental preparation. Bob

New Garmin Pilot Synthetic Vision

Thank you. I am still flying with my instructor as I am just getting familiar with the plane and everything else. I don't pay to much attention to the new gadgets even they are in the plane. I am focusing on the fundamentals in close proximity of the airport. Today I did Xwind landings only since the conditions where almost perfect - 90 degrees cross wind 15 knots gusting 22. Good practice. Two forced go arounds. -
I didn't pay too much attention to it as I have stayed in the pattern today. The wind was direct crosswind ( wind 230 runway 32) at 17knots gusting 22knots. I made 12 landings ( two go arounds ) and now I know what those guys are talking about if they say rudder on the floor. This was my third flight in the mooney ever. Anyway, I am going up tomorrow and I will take a closer look in turns. But it feels like somebody have to take a look at it and bench test it anyway. Thanks.

I have notice today than my HSI (KI 525 ) acts weird. It is slaved to the compass and it matches to the compass first but then after while it doesn't keep the same direction. It is way too off. When I " unslave " it ( free gyro mode) and then slave it in again the HDG flag will appear then disappear and it will synchronize with the compass but after while it will be off again. Is it ready for overhaul or what should I check? Thanks Bob

New Garmin Pilot Synthetic Vision
MooneyBob replied to MooneyBob's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I don't think so. There is no detail manual provided, but I don't see any option like that in the menus. You can split the navigation screen and use second half for the panel with backup AI or plates or safe taxi or weather or many more information. I have flown first time today with it and it is nice as you can see your runway on the screen on take off and all other terrain details as you fly around. I have never seen glass panel before as I am fresh pilot with a fresh plane so this is very cool and more important very helpful for me. Maybe one day I will drop $50k into the panel upgrade but for now it's enough for me. It costs close to nothing. -

Should we keep that horse in the barn just in case the car doesn't start in the morning? -
Thanks. I will definitely check them out.

I can't wait to see the final result. Please let me know how many man hours it took you to do that and how hard it is for a average skilled aviator..

Yes, but 3D provides altitude indicator backup. -
New Garmin Pilot Synthetic Vision

I used to use the Foreflight simultaneously with the Garmin. I had Foreflight on my iPad and Garmin Pilot on my Google Nexus. I have multiple external GPS units. After while for no particular reason I have decided for Garmin Pilot and GDL 39. I've just got my GDL 39 3D that allows the AI and synthetic vision feature. Now I use two iPads ( regular on my kneeboard and mini on the side of the windshield). The Garmin subscription is good for two devices so it doesn't cost anything extra. The GDL let you use both of them at the same time. One you can use as a AI or synthetic vision and second one for navigation, weather, traffic, etc. And I still have another Garmin GLO external GPS as a backup. Multiple battery packs and chargers to make sure there are no surprises in the air. I think I still have the paper charts somewhere :-). -

New Garmin Pilot Synthetic Vision

Yeap. iPad $399 GDL 39 3D $899 Subscription $ 79/year IFR premium. Now just to wait until they make it IFR legal and the FAA let me glue it over my existing panel with double stick tape. -
I was nicely surprised today after I have updated my Garmin Pilot App. They added a synthetic vision feature that looks very nice on the iPad. Can't wait to fly it tomorrow. I really like the Pilot app since I started to use it a year ago. They made a huge progress and added a lot of useful features. Together with traffic, weather, terrain and other bells and whistles it became a really nice back up tool in the cockpit. Bob M20J

Another Garmin Pilot App improvement. Very nice.

I was in the exact spot two weeks ago. I've got my M20J, I am still working on my insurance reqs and I was flying Arrow right before I bought Mooney. As I was preparing for my first flight I was reading a lot and everything possible about Mooney. It looked like the landing is a huge issue and you need 10,000' runway to land it. So I took off with my instructor and first we practiced some basic stuff and how to slow this ridiculously fast plane down. Very first landing was around 100kts on downwind, 90 on base, 80 kts on final and 75kts over the thresh hold. I used decent amount of trim to relieve pressure on the yoke. It gives me more sensitivity on the flare. I start my flare pretty low as the plane is lower than Arrow. I look almost at the end of the runway and try to fly the plane all the way to the end. It is going down smoothly as it is loosing speed. I pull the nose up right before touch down and hold it up as long as I can. No excessive floating registered. I am 6' and the Mooney is a perfect fit for my body and legs. I have very nice view right over the cowling. I have exited to a taxiway after 2000' on the runway. After more landings and practicing I am around 68 - 70 kts over the fence and every landing looks like a short field. I use only 15 flaps. This applies to no wind / light wind conditions. With more wind and gusting I wouldn't rush to the runway. I have bounced once, not even too much but I didn't take any chances and went around right away.
