Well they’re open to some extent. They do make parts, but you need to order them through an MSC. They might take a while depending on the part. I emailed them about a technical question a week ago and Frank Crawford emailed me back within a day. There are some 3rd party parts that Mooney hasn’t been willing/able to order that are pretty hard to find. Seems mostly for older models.

These are amazing machines! We just did a 3 day weekend exploring the Oregon Caves, Redwood forest and N. California beach. Now we’re at 11,500’ and 139Ktas above the western smoke scooting home. Oh yeah and we’re making ~150kts ground on 8.3gph!

Pre-J Mooney Jump Start Procedure
Ragsf15e replied to Mooney-Shiner's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
All the stuff @jetdriven said is true, however if you just want to see if it spins up faster (and the current battery isn’t dead, un-airworthy, etc), why wouldn’t you just hook it up with a normal set of car jumper cables like you would a car? -
Eerily similar to the Buffalo crash… some ice, losing airspeed, not taking action to maintain airspeed and prevent the stall. Once you stall a big airplane covered in ice, I’d think you’re in a bad way.

I think there’s some dependence on probe position. You guys potentially have ff too low at takeoff too… what is your sea level fuel flow? -

Ha! It happens to us all. I just climbed through 9000’ DA and checked my ff at target egt was 14gph so your new guesstimate makes more sense. Im just glad @Utah20Gflyer was willing to call you on it because I was really doubting myself as your engine knowledge is typically spot on! -

You will get max power but you’ll get real hot chts real fast too. I use the target egt from a sea level full rich takeoff. It’s probably ~200 rop, but it’s close enough to max power and it won’t cook the engine during the initial climb. @DCarlton, on a sea level takeoff at full rich, note your egt (probably low 1200s). On a high DA takeoff just lean to that same egt, then you keep leaning to hold that egt as you climb. It’s a reasonable setting and you can adjust richer if needed for cooling on really hot days. -
Here’s another weird one… going through the gorge just east of Portland there’s now like 5 fires with their own tfrs (and smoke up to 11,000’). But my phone shows only about half the tfrs - I downloaded it just before takeoff about an hour earlier. It’s not getting adsb. My ipad is connected to adsb and shows about half the tfrs. both have TFR‘s the other doesn’t and both are missing TFR’s. Neither has a complete picture.

I agree with you about that ff being too low. Usually Ross is correct on these engine questions 100% of the time, so i was doubting myself, but it’s definitely higher than 10. I would think even 100ROP would be slightly higher (maybe 11gph?) and as you said, cooling is key. I use target egt for my high DA altitude takeoffs and that leaves me around 200 ROP which seems to be a reasonable compromise between cooling and power. I’d guess around 13-14 gph at that DA, but I’ll check my engine data as I took off at a very similar DA just last month in MMH (so yes, it should do it just fine unless there’s mitigating factors). -

Oh heck, with a system failure, even a little one, I wouldn’t worry about airways at all. Either ask for direct to a Vor within range or just ask for a vector until you can pick up a vor close to your destination. Or just get vectors the whole way. I know there are places they alway give airways, but you can just file/fly vor to vor. With a failure, I doubt anyone would complain. For me the #2 nav/com is more about its ILS or LOC approach capabilities. Id be pretty comfortable with using a vor or vectors to get somewhere, but getting on the ground is key at that point and ATC might not be able to get you to good enough weather to do a visual. -

Honestly, I would just tell atc I lost my gps and would like vectors to the ils. Or vectors to a visual. You’re supposed to tell them anyway (system failures), and clearly it’s not an emergency, but they will help get you down. Should be a non issue. I definitely think a single gps is fine for ifr. If it fails (or is jammed), tell atc, ask for vectors or use your secondary navigation source - that’s where I draw the line. I would like radio 2 to be comm/nav so at least I have a secondary nav and approach capability. Having a second gps is fine but I think overkill. -
Yes, it works well. I actually have a splitter and use it for my son and I. I use a pulse ox and it keeps me mid 90s. I’ve used it up to 14,500’ and it works fine, however it was on the highest setting for two of us at that altitude. Be careful with the power required, here’s a picture of my DC power coord for the g5. It seems to say 10amps required, so you’ll need a bigger breaker than that. Actual power draw at different settings was hard (impossible) to find in the manual.

Yes, someone else has run a cig lighter into their baggage compartment and uses it to run a G5. I also use a g5, however, I use the batteries currently because the cig power required is significant. I have a 5amp CB on my 12v cig charger and it requires something like a 12amp cb for a 12v system. If you wire one, make sure you get the correct power setup.

I think if you get that installed and working in 3 days, you should buy a lottery ticket to go with it! That is if you can still afford one… -
GTX 345r pairing but not connecting via Bluetooth
Ragsf15e replied to TGreen's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Yes, I’d agree with that! I sat there while they configured the gtx-345 in the g1000. There’s no “page” for it on the normal g1000 pages unless you’re in the configuration/maint mode. After you’ve connected, there are some things you can control through GP app (like setting connection priorities, deleting old connected devices, etc). It is weird when you can’t get to all the menus like on a regular gtx345 (which I have in my personal airplane), but it does work pretty well. So I guess id say there really isn’t a user interface!? -
GTX 345r pairing but not connecting via Bluetooth
Ragsf15e replied to TGreen's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I really like FF and don’t mind paying for the basic version, however, I believe (but haven’t tried this), that if you load FF or GP without a subscription, you can still get weather and traffic on either an expired map or maybe just a basic aviation overlay if you want some access to the data. The subscription just enables the chart updates. Again, I haven’t tried that, I could easily be wrong… -
GTX 345r pairing but not connecting via Bluetooth
Ragsf15e replied to TGreen's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Skip, I don’t think this is true (although I believe you are correct about 105% of the time). At least in the G1000 I fly with a gtx345r, the BT connection is directly to the gtx. The g1000 doesn’t have bt. In your g3x, its a different story. -
GTX 345r pairing but not connecting via Bluetooth
Ragsf15e replied to TGreen's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Possibly there is a flight stream that can be added to a g1000, I haven’t seen that. In my case, the config of the gtx345r is set up in the configuration pages of the g1000, but any connections to the gtx345r to external devices (ipad) go through the BT directly from the gtx345r. In fact, I have had an intermittent issue with traffic not showing on the g1000, but it all shows perfectly on the ipad. Garmin thought there was a “cache” issue with the g1000. The BT signal is coming from the gtx345r. In my application (pa-46) it’s behind the panel, so good signal. You might want to try what @PT20J suggested to see if a stronger signal helps. Finally, I didn’t have to use Garmin Pilot in order to set mine up, however, there are a few settings and status issues that you can see with Garmin Pilot connected to the grx that you can’t see with foreflight. The free version is fine. I would download that and check it out. -
GTX 345r pairing but not connecting via Bluetooth
Ragsf15e replied to TGreen's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Unless there’s a newer model of the g1000, there’s no way to connect to it directly, at least bt or wifi that I know of? The g1000 meridian i fly has the gtx-345r as well, and my ipad connects directly to the gtx-345r. There’s no connection to the g1000. -

Ragsf15e replied to TGreen's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I have a different kind of plane with a G 1000 and GTX 345R. After getting it I learned that they have to turn off the ahrs in the GTX 345r config. I would guess there is also a config setting for sending out the traffic and weather. Mine does work, so yours should be able to as well. As an aside, you probably have ADSB weather on your G 1000 as well now. You would have to select that over XM (menu button on weather datalink page). I leave XM on my G 1000, and then I can compare it to ADSB weather on the iPad. -
I think it might be important for us to make sure our oil temp sensors are in the same location. I know there’s a place it’s supposed to be, but there are “alternate” locations it could be, and the oil temp varies a lot throughout its circulation.
