  1. I see the same thing in pilots losing stick and rudder skills. The most scared I have been in an airplane is with another acting as PIC. This has led me to increasing my personal minimums in regards to who I fly with. When flying around I focus a lot on hand flying. This has helped me a lot when the airplane has performed tasks I did not ask of it. But it also makes me look "ludditicious" when working with 530s and such. I'm trying to find (for me) a sweet spot. I don't want to be left behind but I also don't want to lose the ability to fly within limits. I fly with a chart and a handheld GPS. I just bought a Galaxy Note 8 and put an app called "Avare" on it. I am hesitant to try it out as I may like it. Baby steps. Got the idea from Bill Murray.
  2. This is a very odd card. Anyone else have this card? As far as the numbers are concerned, I would give you homework and find them in the performance section. You won't find most miles per gallon of fuel in the POH. You will have to ask Bernard Carson.
  3. The steps became fixed in 1968. It's possible you had a factory "downgrade." What makes you think it didn't come that way? Is it loose?
  4. Yes. No renter will treat your stuff the way you want it to be treated. Ever.
  5. I think you passed over the partnership idea too casually. What about the other end of the spectrum? Having a good partner would make it much more affordable and enjoyable. Plus they may have connections in the parts or maintenance network. Plus it would teach you how to play well with others.
  6. Remove fire suit. Excellent description of a technique that works for you. Exactly what I was taught my first trips up with a Mooney specific CFI. Just think, you are more competent than the most competent Mooney instructors that don't recommend T&Gs. A Mooney needs runway to reconfigure for TO after landing.
  7. I would consider a max CHT of 374 acceptable. I wouldn't concentrate on on EGT as much as on CHT. I think you're dong just fine.
  8. During every snow event, we have to update the surface NOTAMS as we clean them. It's not uncommon for a runway or taxiway to have a new NOTAM 1-2 times an hour. How does a pilot keep up with that? I like your NOTAM Joe, maybe I'll try that next time.
  9. I work out at DIA. The FAA now mandates that when it rains, we issue NOTAMS for wet surfaces. It's just more busy work.
  10. This was a joke right? I mean...........Labor Day Fools!!!!! hahaha I got you all!....... Of course, I'm assuming Mooney isn't paying you to be a test pilot. Disregard my previous post if they are.
  11. I would treat this the same as renting out your primary residence while you're away. Only makes sense if you know who's renting (in this case, flying) it. It would provide an absolutely bulletproof excuse to fly the RV more.
  12. A 1969 with retractable step? It was fixed in 1968. Did that only last one year?
  13. Jay Z. Taming the fire breathing dragon!
  14. I would ask around and find a CFI who would show you both the crab and slip tehcniques and use what you feel most comfortable with. I use the slip method because I would like to know on approach if I have enough opposite rudder (usually the limiting factor in low wings) to complete a landing rather than in ground effect. And don't worry about admitting that you are struggling with anything. We forget that properly flying airplanes is very difficult. I cannot think of a single time I had a perfect flight.
  15. Mine too! However........ This quote is widely misattributed to Leonardo da Vinci, but there is no actual record of his ever having said or written it. The probable author is John Hermes Secondari, American author and television producer.
  16. Congrats on getting one of the good engines. Don't tear it apart to find out why it was working so well. We did that in the military and it drove me nuts.
  17. But it doesn't show you how far above or below the clouds are in relation to you correct? Just being clear is not legal.
  18. Honestly, who knows how the manufacturers set Vne? All Part 23 states are the calculations for a minimum Vne. I'm sure there's a safety factor thats added in. What is it? As far as testing, Mooneys don't shed airframe parts when the going gets rough like the other manufacturers. In any case, operating above the indicated Vne is not legal, and any tests that showed the TN F could do so would not be in compliance. Mooniac really likes math.
  19. Nailed it. I liked this discussion.
  20. Ahhh, makes sense.
  21. Well stated. Nothing wrong with playing Devil's advocate? Yes, mooniac is right. But how many people learned something about testing, flutter, arbitrary numbers by the FAA.... Something I learned was what I was calling flutter is actually the "Hopf bifurcation." Thanks for the physics lesson aviator. But yes, mooniac is a very patient person, and very fun to mess with. Hopefully will be doing it more in the future.
  22. Back to the AD. What is different about these 38 airplanes? Seems the TC would keep them the same.
  23. Can you show me where it says this? I can't find in Part 23 where it states if Vne is based on sea level or service ceiling.
  24. I just wanted to explain the difference between all other placarded V speeds and Vne. It went out of control, but Vne is not the never exceed speed. It's just an arbitrary FAA number.
