PeterRus Posted March 6 Report Posted March 6 Am thinking about swapping a Slick magneto for a SureFly next annual (May). Any drawback of doing this? Seems like a cheap (relative) upgrade.
jetdriven Posted March 6 Report Posted March 6 We have done perhaps 12 of them. there's not much downside, in fact, the Surefly really isn't much more expensive than a new slick magneto, for example. They claim you can just drop it in, but it's not that simple, you have to run a wire from the battery which means pulling the left side wall panels and then getting a wire through the firewall. You also need to figure out if you're gonna keep the impulse coupling magneto, I certainly would, and then you need to figure out if you can repurpose the left side harness to fire all of the top plugs while you put the surefly on the bottom with fine wires. 2
Igor_U Posted March 7 Report Posted March 7 I installed mine some 5 years ago and I love it. Easier starts, and supposing better LOP ops but my IO360 never had issue with that. As jetdriven mentioned you need to run the wire from the battery but removing the panels and wiring was done by me so it didn't cost as much. We install it as Left mag and removed the Shower of sparks and wiring at the same time. I would recommend it. 2
Reed Campbell Posted March 7 Report Posted March 7 In our 1967 M-20 we got rid of the shower-of-sparks system (starter vibrator) and installed the SureFly on the left side.
