Anybody running ForeFlight on their iPhone for their "primary" (VFR) navigation?

I have barely flown twice with my iPad Mini 6 mounted on the yoke, but already I'm not liking how much of the panel it obscures compared to my old Lowrance Airmap 500 (which, BTW, was adequate to take me to both the East and West Coasts, as well as north to Maine and south to Florida).

Thinking maybe running on an iPhone 16 or 16 plus and mounting the Mini as a kneeboard.

For comparison

  • Mini 6:
    8.3" diagonal, external 5.3" x 7.7"
  • iPhone 16:
    6.1" diagonal, external 2.8" x 5.8"
  • iPhone 16 plus
    6.7" diagonal, external 3.1" x 6.3"
  • Airmap 500 (for grins)
    3"? diagonal, external 2.5" x 5.6"

Your experience?

Are you set on a yoke mount?

I started using a MyGoFlight suction mount on the side window for my iPhone, replacing my yoke mount iPad Mini 6, and I really like it. I have an iPhone 14 Pro which is the same size as the base 16. I use it as my primary Foreflight device both in and out of the cockpit. When I replace the 14 Pro I will get the 16 Max for the readability of the larger screen. I keep the iPad Mini in the side map pocket for POH and avionics pilot guide reference. The iPhone holder swivels easily to go from portrait to landscape and I may be able to use the 16 Max for doc reference if the screen is readable enough and not need the iPad except for backup.

Here's a pic of the MyGoFlight mount with the iPhone holder. This is the standard size articulating mount. They also make one with shorter arms, which I have now, and it works even better in the limited space I have available.

My Mini is mounted up high on the center bar, up near the ceiling, only thing it blocks is the unreadable thermometer.

how do you have it mounted,  mine isn't any bigger than the yoke.

Mine is fine on the yoke, without blocking anything.  I have it mounted with RAM bits, and it is somewhat flat, so when I look down, it is perpendicular to my line of sight.

I will try to remember to take some pictures tomorrow.
