Hello Mooney lovers! I am hoping one of you can help me out. I live in Cookeville, TN and fly out of KSRB in a Piper Archer II. I don’t yet have a Mooney, but have the opportunity to pay for block time in a nice M20E. However, the owner doesn’t want me to do transition training in the aircraft. Is there anyone in the area that does transition training in a pre-J Mooney that I can rent for that purpose?

I’m confused about your situation.  Are you renting the E model Mooney or purchasing it?  If you are purchasing do the transition training after you buy it.  If you are renting it why would the guy care if you were doing dual instruction in it?  The CFI would be the one qualifying to be covered by the insurance.    Generally speaking the transition training must be completed in the actual airplane so if you aren’t buying this E model it may not do you any good any way.  
 

Maybe a little clarification?

He’s renting but the renter won’t let him get his transition training in said rented plane.

Something isn’t making sense…

usually, insurance is responsible for the confusion…

a typical insurance requirement is 10hrs dual instruction + 10hrs solo prior to carrying passengers…

And the insurance will be more expensive for the plane for a year… about 1amu more expensive…

 

Find a Mooney specific CFI, and use them in your rented Mooney.

By the time you are done with the 10/10 requirement… expect an additional year of experience to level the field….

the additional year of experience includes all of the important things like wind, rain, high DA, ice, thunderstorms, and freezing cold temps…

 

Find Parker if it is an insurance issue…

 

Showing up with your 10/10 without a year of experience probably won’t alleviate the situation… until you renew on the following year.

All of the insurance companies will ask… how many hours in type and model… 

100hrs and an IR are good for lowering your insurance cost….

How other people have handled this situation… new guy gets to pay for the additional one year insurance bump.  Spread out over 100hrs it won’t be that bad…

call your insurance guy or Parker for details…

PP thoughts only, not a CFI or insurance guy…

note: like entropy, insurance is always increasing… until you are 80. Then, it is just unavailable… :)

Transition training doesn’t always have to be in the actual airplane.  I could be in same make and model. 
 

it depends on what the insurance says 

it just sounds like the owner doesn’t want the wear and tear of learning to land a Mooney on the plane.  I don’t agree, but it isn’t my airplane

Thanks for the responses! And yes, I understand how this process normally works. The owner of the rental was just reluctant to let me transition train using his plane, so I thought I would see about another option.

Thanks @carusoam for the information provided. I will approach the owner with an offer to cover the extra cost to insurance and maybe that is all that is needed.
