N601RX Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 We replaced all the side windows in our 67F. The side windows required very little trimming. We used the Mooney recommended glue. You can find it slightly out of date on e-bay very cheap. It is not hard work, but it is time consumming. Each hole has to be drilled and then countersunk. Use a drill bit and countersink made for plexiglass and you will not have to worry about cracks. As you work around drilling the holes, you need to put screws in about every 3rd hole to hold everything. You also need to dress the edge to help provent cracks. It will take a couple of hours to get the old glue off. We purchased new stainless hardware to reinstall them with. The glue is a little messy, so put one strip of masking tape around the window and one around the aluminum skin. Punch holes through the tape for the screws. When you tighten up the screws the extra glue will squeeze out around the edge of the window.Apply the glue and let it sit for about 24 hrs. At this point it is no longer sticky, but isn't hard either and will just pill right off. If you try to clean it up when it is still sticky it is very difficult. It is a 2 person job, one inside the plane and one outside. If you don't want the plane to be down very long you might try doing the front 2 and then the back 2 later. We used the .250 solar Grey and really like it. I have some pictures in my gallery. Quote
scottfromiowa Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 Mike, I only see 3 panel photos in your gallery. What am I missing? Quote
N601RX Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 Sorry I put the pictures in a thread not in my gallery. The work table isn't necessary, but I already had it and it came in handy. http://www.mooneyspace.com/index.cfm?mainaction=posts&forumid=2&threadid=2085 Quote
Immelman Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 I put all new glass into my 66E last year. I used LP Aero plastics out of PA. I used standard thickness on all the side windows and went with a 1/4" one piece conversion for the windshield. I did most of the work on the side windows myself. I had my IA and his staff do the windshield (it was a lot of work... radio racks had to be taken out just to remove old fasteners, and the wind shield required a lot of trimming). If you go with LP Aero, here is a money saving tip: Call chief aircraft in Oregon and place the order through them. The product will still ship direct from LP aero. the savings were substantial (20+% vs book). I'm quite happy with how it all turned out. Quote
scottfromiowa Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 Looks good. Twelve hours is not bad for such a big project. Did that include removal of interior trim...and replacement? Quote
N601RX Posted February 18, 2011 Report Posted February 18, 2011 Yes, but that was 2 people working 12 hours each or 24 hrs total. It is also a good time to put shoulder harnesses in. It is much easier to work the mounting brackets around the tubing with windows out. Quote
flight2000 Posted February 18, 2011 Report Posted February 18, 2011 I agree with Jesse, the front windshield is a lot of work. You'll need an experienced A&P that has done the windshield conversion before. Don't let someone experiment with your plane just to get experience. The side windows are a little easier and you can do them yourself. You basically have two choices on the conversion, SWTA and LASAR. SWTA is still waiting on enough orders to get the windshields made, so LASAR seems to be the only game right now for doing the 201 windshield conversion. It'll take about 55-60 hours to complete the install. Photos: http://www.67m20e.com/201_windshield_upgrade.htm I had all of my windows replaced and went with the smoke colored. It's a simple preference choice for what you want. Brian Quote
outermarker Posted February 18, 2011 Author Report Posted February 18, 2011 Thanks all...I am not going to do the 201 conversion, just replace the factory stuff. A single piece windshield over the old two piece. I wasn't sure about the extra thickness and the fit of it over the factory stuff. It seems that the side and door windows is something I can do, but leave the windshield for those who have done them before, correct? What about replacing the clips? Should I need to do this, where is the best place to obtain the clips? Is there anything else that can prep me for this project? thanks, albert Quote
