Ftlausa
I experienced a right magneto failure on run-up this weekend. My mechanic sent the offending slick magneto to the shop for inspection and possible repair. He did not think it necessary to send the left mag, but I wanted it checked out to be safe, so it went too. The shop reported back that the electrode finger was detached on the right mag, and hence the failure. The scary part was that they reported that the electrode finger on the left mag was very loose and could have failed at any time. Both mags are about 500 hours since new, but had an early 500 hour inspection 250 hours ago with worn parts replaced. Is this common with slick mags, or did I just get unlucky (or perhaps lucky that the failure was on the ground)? Just curious. Anyway, two new mags being installed now. jetdriven
Yes it's quite common. Here's one from a few months ago. It was less than 350 hr since new. You know cmi takes slicks for cores now?

You know cmi takes slicks for cores now? So when it happens again in 250-350 hours from now, you can swap them for two brand new overhauled Bendix mags that are solid and reliable. Shame, because it wasn't that many years ago that the Slicks were actually good quality.
Ftlausa
An update: Some additional research last night revealed that Champion just issued a service bulletin on this issue. I will post a link later, but this seems to be a known issue requiring intervention on the affected mags. The SB release seems to not be well disseminated. jetdriven
Do they pay for parts and labor to make it right?
Ftlausa
If its within the warranty period, they are covering costs. I have an issue with that since this is pretty clearly a product defect, but I have not decided whether its worth the time to pursue it with Champion.
