I experienced a right magneto failure on run-up this weekend. My mechanic sent the offending slick magneto to the shop for inspection and possible repair. He did not think it necessary to send the left mag, but I wanted it checked out to be safe, so it went too. The shop reported back that the electrode finger was detached on the right mag, and hence the failure. The scary part was that they reported that the electrode finger on the left mag was very loose and could have failed at any time. Both mags are about 500 hours since new, but had an early 500 hour inspection 250 hours ago with worn parts replaced.
Is this common with slick mags, or did I just get unlucky (or perhaps lucky that the failure was on the ground)? Just curious.
Anyway, two new mags being installed now.
