320KPH Posted March 22, 2015 Report Posted March 22, 2015 all of a sudden the A3B6D has tripled it's oil consumption, blowing heaps over the belly and Oil Temp is low. I had a leaking rocker cover gasket after an annual that gave me a low temp reading in the leak, but this appears to be a sudden , internal "leak" it was using a quart every 4 hours, but now uses three... Had a new top about 400 hours ago... Quote

Shadrach Posted March 22, 2015 Report Posted March 22, 2015 ^^^seconded. You're using nearly a qt an hour. Is the engine compartment dry? Quote
Guest Posted March 22, 2015 Report Posted March 22, 2015 At that consumption rate it's a very rich stroke, 40:1. There should some evidence in the tail pipe of the oil burning. Clarence Quote

Clarence Yes Doc, the pipe is now black rather than light grey. there's burnt oil all over the belly and some spattering on the cowl flaps Quote
aaronk25 Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 Until we find out if you took your lower cowl off and visually inspected for leaks are hand are kinda tied. Could be a seal and leaking oil running out the cowl would blow it all over the bottom..... If there is no leaks....ah well you should be able to determine very quickly which cylinder it is the culprit by (with the lower cowl off) the telltale signs of oil on the exhaust header and intake pipe of the smoking gun. If in fact that much oil is going threw the combustion chamber it will be very evident at first external glance. Look behind the tail pipe the instead of being tanish grey it will be dark goopy brown/blackish. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
larryb Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 Have you checked all of the spark plugs? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
Piloto Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 Check the oil cooler and lines for leaks. Also the prop governor lines. Also the lower spark plugs for oil residue. José Quote
320KPH Posted March 23, 2015 Author Report Posted March 23, 2015 thanks for all your advice I will let you know what happens... Quote
David Mazer Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 Last time that happened, and the only time, it was new engine time. Sorry. Quote
Shadrach Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 Yes Doc, the pipe is now black rather than light grey. there's burnt oil all over the belly and some spattering on the cowl flaps OK, so it's burning, not leaking. The plugs should tell you which cylinder. Quote
N1026F Posted March 27, 2015 Report Posted March 27, 2015 FWIW, the engine analyzer should shoe the defective cylinder running much cooler too... Quote
320KPH Posted June 7, 2015 Author Report Posted June 7, 2015 Pulled plugs and measured compression: Plugs all OK, Compressions all OK... Quote
Guest Posted June 7, 2015 Report Posted June 7, 2015 Pulled plugs and measured compression: Plugs all OK, Compressions all OK... If the inside of the tail pipe is black from burned oil, the plugs should also show evidence of burned oil, as should the tops of the pistons. Good compression reading can be the result of excess oil on the cylinder walls and piston rings. Clarence Quote
