yvesg Posted November 18, 2013 Report Posted November 18, 2013 Hi folks, looks like I will upgrade the panel with the IFR GPS. I am looking at buying an affordable second hand CDI. A part supplier tells me that I can use a KI209 with the 430W... the installer tells me I absolutely need the one with the A suffix (KI209A). Who should I believe? Yves
N601RX Posted November 18, 2013 Report Posted November 18, 2013 It has to be the A. The 209 will only accept composite input. The A will accept composite or Left/Right. The KI 520 will work also. Be careful with buying used indicators. Some models below a certain serial model or mod level are pretty much desk ornaments.

N601RX Posted November 18, 2013 Report Posted November 18, 2013 what I said above was based on other standalone GPS's that do not have a nav reciever in them as the 430 does, so it may be incorrect. Normally the composite comes from a nav radio and GPS's use left/right. There are also differences in the resolvers inside different indicators. The A model basically has a relay to bypass the composite demodulator and can apply the Left/Right directly to the needle movement coil.
yvesg Posted November 18, 2013 Author Report Posted November 18, 2013 Thanks for your feedback. i found out that the KI209 would work but not to show GPS deviation. The diagram we were based on has a note stating this at the bottom. So all is clear now... to fully use the GPS potential, the KI209 is not the proper choice. Thanks Yves
OR75 Posted November 18, 2013 Report Posted November 18, 2013 you can easily find the GNS 430 install manual on the net The non-A version of the KI-209 will not support the GPS Annunciate function In the unlikely case where you have a 400 or 420 (not 430), then you could use the Ki-209.
Alan Fox Posted November 18, 2013 Report Posted November 18, 2013 I have a 520 you an have for 350.00 856 419 5209...
yvesg Posted November 19, 2013 Author Report Posted November 19, 2013 Thanks Alan but this one is not on the approved list. Yves
yvesg Posted December 22, 2013 Author Report Posted December 22, 2013 Daver, the avionics shop that did the install happened to have a serviceable second hand GI106A that was taken out of a Cessna recently. I got it a bit cheaper than what bennett avionics sell these for so I am quite happy with it. This unit provides full features support. Yves
Alan Fox Posted December 22, 2013 Report Posted December 22, 2013 I may have a GI106A in the next few days if you are interested , Regards Alan...
