I am a new member to this forum and a new owner of a Mooney M20J. There is an area on the wing where the radar is installed in the wing that is covered in a black paint or wing walk non-skid treatment. We are not using the radar and will eventually have it removed. The area can be seen in the edge of the attached picture. In the meantime however, has anyone painted over the area instead of refacing it with new sheet metal? If so how did it turn out? Otherwise, has anyone re-treated the area with the ant-slip or wing walk material? Thanks and I look forward to learning a tremendous amount form the forums.

Well, the time has come to sell my most recent project. This 231 has everything anyone could ever desire in a 231. I run a FAA repair station and we are a Mooney service center. All work was completed by us. I will most certainly forget something but here it goes. Airframe: 3400TTSN NDH Brand new grey leather interior, all new solar grey UV glass, 2008 paint (8/10), fresh annual (all brakes, disks, shock disks, tires, tubes, gear stripped and repainted, etc.) factory O2, new masks, speed brakes, etc... Engine: TSIO-360-LB, about 25 hours TSMOH New turbo, new exhaust system, O/H'ed fuel system, new GAMI's, new Meryln waste gate, new intercooler, new mags, new harness, new baffles seals, new mounts, new hoses, sitting on a freshly powder coated mount. If it's not listed here, it's probably new.... Avionics: Aspen 1000 Pro PFD w/ EA100 autopilot adapter and APS4A altitude preselect coupled to the KFC200, driven by a Garmin GTN750 and a GTN650, remote Garmin GTX33ES transponder and remote Garmin GMA35 audio panel, both controlled on the touchscreens. Weather and traffic from the Garmin GDL88, as well as a freshly overhauled Weatherscout Radar just for kicks. Bluetooth comes from a Garmin Flightstream 210 to run all your portable devices. JPI EDM700 engine monitor with fuel flow is hooked to both GTN's giving fuel range rings. This plane flies as good as it sounds and is dripping with technology. There is a listing on TAP here with photos: http://www.trade-a-plane.com/search?category_level1=Single+Engine+Piston&make=MOONEY&model=M20K+231+MODIFIED&listing_id=2168971&s-type=aircraft Also there is a thread on here detailing some of the project as it progressed: Anyone interested can contact me directly on here, or jclemens@daytonaaircraft.com, or call 386-255-2049 M-F 9-5 and ask for Jake. You can also contact my broker listed in the TAP listing.

Do all airborne radar sets work on the same frequency? If so, do they interfere with each other? I imagine it's not an issue as they are probably only constructed to receive if they are transmitting. If it could receive without transmitting, would that permit a set to "see" a storm without transmitting using other sets' reflected energy?

I removed the RCA RTA 1001 color radar display and radar assembly from my 1980 M20J. At the time of removal the unit would power up, paint color, and the assembly in the wing was fully functional in its rotation up and down and side to side. I know nothing about radar and do not make any representations as to whether is actually paints the weather accurately. What I will say, is that the former owner of the plane was a lawyer, my boss, and a friend who said he used it all of the time. We removed it to make way for a Garmin 396 with XM and shed 30 lbs.. With all of that said, I am looking to sell all or part of it. I have seen just the radar receiver antenna only on ebay for $800.00 and the display for $400. If you are interested, give me an offer. Pictures are posted. The yellow tag is from a previous shop in 1998.

I have an M20J that had the factory radar installed. We removed the unit from inside the plane and now we want to remove the unit from the wing. It weighs about 30 lbs total. The cover to the wing is fiberglass and has black caulking around the edges. The black non-slip surface is beginning to deteriorate and I am going to paint the fiberglass to match the white wing. Now the question: (1) has anyone ever removed the radar from the wing and is there anything I need to be concerned about? (I am leaving the wires in and simply bundling them up) (2) what type of caulk do I use to reinstall the cover on the wing? (3) Has anyone every simply replaced the fiberglass cover with a customer sheetmetal cover to match the wing? You can see the area in the attached picture (although not a great angle). Thanks.
