This may have been done before and if so, I’m sorry, but I’d like to put a “pinned” topic together listing those CFIs who are willing to do Mooney checkouts for potential new owners. Breakout the thread by geographic areas, refined by type, or some other easily logical and searchable way. I have been contacted to do training for folks from MooneyFlyer or somewhere but what is usually not known to the new owner is the insurance requirements for time in type.—one in my case needed a Bravo time instructor for instance and I have none. I got to thinking hell I don’t know anyone near them to refer them either. So they are searching in unfamiliar territory adding to the stress of taking delivery. I’d like to see something to ease the transition during an already difficult and stressful time by having a single place to find their Mooney CFI. UPDATE INITIAL LIST OF CFIs with the info I’ve been provided so far. I’ll be making a more user friendly version soon. This is just so folks don’t have to search the entire thread to find someone. If you want to be added please let me know and if you want to include more contact information please let me know that as well. I'm planning on getting info from Mooney Flyer to be included and make sure to not have duplicate entries. Mooney CFI_June21.xlsx

Hi, I'm looking for some Mooney specific training in the Chicago land area. Does anyone know of any good CFI's that I can get some training from? I have my PPL and need to get my complex endorsement. A CFII would be a plus as I am looking to get my instrument rating as well. Thanks! Paul

Hello, I wanted to take a minute and introduce myself. I moved to the Daytona area a year ago. I am based at KOMN. I spend most of my days at the field instructing and working on my planeand making airplane noises. I am a CFI,CFII. MEI here. I Currently own a 65 M20c. I bought this neglected bird a few months ago. It sat outside untouched for a few years. But the overall numbers were good all low times. And the previous owner did the major (engine, tanks) repairs before he had some medical issues. I had to send out the carb it was clogged. A few days later I had her running. That was a major hurdle. Then it was onto the next item. I have a fresh panel being built. It will be sporting a Garmin 430, Stratus ESG, dual cdi, ps engineering audio panel and a jpi 900. Keeping the steam gauges till a later date. While that work is being conducted. I took on the daunting task of replacing all the firewall insulation. The plane had the eyelids removed and placed on with a few screws. Water manage to get in and sit on the floor. Luckily no carpet installed. I should have taken the hint from the upholstery shop on the field. What a pain. But now all that is done and man what a difference. In the next few weeks it should make its first flight in 2+ years. Well that's just a little about me. I look forward to bouncing around here for a while. So if you see me on the field stop say hi. I would love to talk. Jason

I'm looking for a good local Mooney experienced instructor to get me checked out in the new 231 that I'm planning to buy soon here in San Diego. Any recommendations are welcome. Scott

So, to continue with supplementing my education in IFR, I have been reading Pilot error: Anatomies of aircraft accidents by the Editors of Flying Magazine, after a suggestion posted here and I have found it riveting. Then yesterday, during the course of conversation on an unrelated topic, one of the people that works for me mentioned something about knowing a pilot that was killed in a crash. He didn't have much data on the accident, but I was able to drill down through the NTSB database and located the incident. What I found was somewhat shocking, but eerily coincident with a question that I was thinking about posting here for comment. Coincidentally, there is a recent thread about logging IFR proficiency that I found interesting as well. For background, here is the operative excerpt from the report: An operations staff member at JAS stated that it seemed to be common knowledge among airport personnel (staff, airplane owners, and other pilots) that although the pilot was not instrument rated, he frequently filed instrument flight plans, and operated in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC). The operations staff member had heard other pilots complain about the pilot's flying habits in the vicinity of JAS, and in particular when IMC existed at JAS. The investigation was unable to obtain additional details regarding those observations. It occurred to me that any pilot might simply file an IFR FP, TO into IMC, fly wherever, execute an approach, land and go on his merry way. How would the FAA know that he was not instrument rated? Then I thought, wait, surely they check the pilot name on the FP against the airman DB, no? Apparently not. As an aside, and of course we don't know exactly what happened, but it appears that IMC took out this man, his wife and his 9 YO son.

I garnered so much good stuff from my earlier thread "IFR question" that I thought I would open up a new one. I am over halfway through Collins, Taylor and Machado and now have what on it's face may look like a stupid question. That said, keep in mind that the dumbest question is the one that wasn't asked, so here goes: So, you have an instrument rating and you decide you want to fly from KXXX to KYYY and the weather is IFR at KYYY. What if there is no approach at KYYY that you have the equipment for? For example, in my E I have dual VOR CDI's and one of them has a GS. That's it other than a mode C transponder and a GPSMAP 295. The 295 is WAAS and has approaches of all sorts built into it, but it is HH and thus for "situational awareness" only. So, I can only fly (IFR) to airports with VOR, LOC, ILS and "RADAR ONLY" approaches? What if the ILS is out at KYYY? What if the ILS goes out while I am enroute? Is there any easy way to quickly determine whether or not I am eligible to land somewhere? Is there a database that only lists, for example, airports with ILS approaches? Or VOR? Or LOC? ...but not DME, GPS or ADF/NDB? This really has me perplexed and I think I am missing some fundamental flight planning element.

Hey fellow flyers, I am new to the group and in the market for a M20J/K and looking for someone who owns one in the Savannah, GA area to see if I might be able to "try it on" before I commit my time and effort if finding one. Second looking for a CFII preferably a Mooney owner in the same area that is proficient in type. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
