Any Interest in an AC/Ice Box Product - Gauging Interest ???

Just thought I would toss this out for those of you that might me wanting or thinking about the same. I spoke with JPI at Osh about upgrading my 830 unit to the now 900 (primary certified)..what would it take?. According to JPI you can't do just an upgrade using your same wiring harness etc that has been done for the 830 to the 900. FAA requires the whole harness be redone using a new 900 harness and ALL required wiring and sensors be replaced with what comes with the 900. JPI admits its the same hardware and harness, and should be just a simple plug-n-play upgrade with just a few extra steps. At this time going from 830 to 900 is a whole new install, not just add-on.. That sucks. JPI is trying to negotiate the issue or rationalize with FAA. Maybe with time it will be a plug-in-play replacement by just adding a few extra hook-ups. Not yet though.

Great seeing the factory represented and we appreciated the factory updates. Good seeing our brand is standing strong and looking brighter than ever. The forum was very informative and it was great being able to meet some of the forum members and put a face to a avatar handle. To all still going or those heading home we wish safe travel. The wallet is empty, credit cards loaded and a new pair of Nikes worn out...LOL.. This was our first time and a great one. See ya next year or in April

Wow..serious bad luck going on here. I'll let experts chime in on the issues. Welcome and hang in there. When it's all sorted you will be grins ear to ear again.

I did the JPI 830..best money spent for me so far. I see there is now a 900 available that can be used as primary (wish I knew that when I did the 830). Heading to Osh on Monday. I'll be curious to see what it takes to upgrade to the 900 vs. 830. If the budget is there for you the 830 is money well spent IMHO.

Lots of good planes available for sale and the market is still soft. The Rocket is a great looking option, although the Missile, Rocket and 252 are all on the same playing field, but each offer an individual special feature setting them apart from the other . Being a family of just two of us (sometimes just, one..me) I think the Rocket would be very cool. My only concern was TBO and cost of OH. I do like the fact, if I understand correctly, that the company that does the Rocket conversions is still up and going. I've always been a "Power-Performance" junky..hence my previous toys over the past years, 600 hp Boss Hoss V8 Motorcycle addiction (nothing like a 1200 lb motorcycle), or 408 cubic inch Vengence Racing Corvette Z06 (900 hp). Both of those toys are long gone in favor of following up on my previously lost passion of flying. So far picking up the passion to fly again has been a blast over the past few years. All the toy $ has been put into my M20 and it is nearly complete (maybe..LOL). Maybe a Rocket would be the next step?...or maybe too big of a step considering my skill level at this point. I do plan to keep the flying passion alive. I like the challenge of improving my flying skills and learning...something the previous hobbies did not do. A Rocket, Missile or 252 would be a handfull of challenge I'm sure ..A big problem and kind of silly, but I love my regular throttle, not a push-pull, but quad style. I have not seen any of the above in the quad style throttle, all the ones I've seen are push/pull. I'm sure there must be one someplace, but that's one feature I like on my M20. Oh well, not my thread, just thinking out-loud...next

Are the TBOs times the same as on our traditional Mooneys? I thought someplace I read they were sooner? I know much more costly.

Great info..I must admit I fall into at least one of the "Don't do items", When you fly, become obsessive-compulsive about thermal cycles. Avoid rapid throttle and mixture changes. Throttle-up slowly and smoothly during takeoffs and go-arounds. Avoid high-speed low-power descents. Avoid going full-rich on final approach if your engine is fuel injected. I'm usually at full rich well in advance of this point, but something that I will make mental note of. I'm sure I've cut it closer than what I should have a few times.

Mine is in for annual. Got "the call" this morning..Compressions are 2,3,4 in the 70s, but cylinder #1 is 30 . Cylinder hopefully off by this afternoon and sent out to be checked out, looks to possibly be exhaust valve. Not sure yet. Plane was flying great, no issues. Still learning the JPI as far as engine reports. No "Morning Sickness" as we have been calling it here. Not sure why there was no indication. Engine EGTs where always very good. I have not stopped by the shop yet.

S-TEC 30 With Altitude Hold For Sale
TWinter replied to Thumper's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
Aircraft assignment specific? Maybe that's why my shop told me two to three weeks to get mine..paperwork, paperwork?..life goes on. I'm now assuming when they send these out they are recording what aircraft they are installed in and by whom. Makes sense liability wise I guess. I was wondering why such a delay in getting mine put in. -
We will be there Tuesday morning thru Sunday..wearing our Mooney Ambassador shirts. I guess I need more shirts..

Thanks and I may actually take you up on that offer. I'll touch base closer to October with a PM. It would be great to see the facility. We will be in Daytona for about 7 days the middle of October. If your around that would be great to put a face to a name from the forum. Never know, might actually be hanger-mates sometime down the road. Two Mooneys can't go wrong.LOL Tom

Hey guys thanks for the input I was looking for. After the few comments I am seriously reconsidering not using my plane. I guess I was more concerned w/ the hours put on the plane, but a good school with split time in a simulator and my plane would be a good mix and of course the plus side to really "knowing" my plane in IFR conditions. Dave and Nick, thanks for the heads up. I will also follow-up on those suggestions. A Mooney specific instructor would be a true plus. Nick I see you are based in St. Augustine..My hopes at some point are to find a part or full-time home in St. Augustine. We've visited there four or five times over the few years. Several more times when I was a kid (military brat) some 40 yrs ago. Just a beautiful part of Florida. We will be in Daytona during the Biketoberfest rally. I plan to spend a few days really looking at real estate in St. Augustine. We love the downtown brick streets, surrounding restaurants and shops etc. We see some sort of future there. I also see the airport has expanded over the past several years. Do you hanger your plane there? I've never landed there, but do intend to in the near future. Thanks again guys..the forum pays off again

I also wish I had continued 20 yrs ago when I got my PPL. The cost then vs. now is crazy. I joke around telling people I feel like I'm getting dumber as I get older...Hopefully we are not getting dumber, maybe at 49 yrs old I just have more irons in the fire now and more to keep track of then I did 20 yrs ago.. I did not own a business back then and my only responsibility was me and not employees or business plans flyboy, Sounds like you are on the home stretch..Keep up the hardwork and let us know when to celebrate for you GLuck The school charges about $9K for IR using the schools plane. Does not include lodging etc. Apparently they have some sort of hook-up w/ a local hotel (within walking distance) to the school. If I use my plane its about $6K+/-. All prices include examiner's fee. I'm sure I could get it done much and I mean much less than $6K with my local CFI, but I'm not sure I would get the same quality of instruction. It would be a pretty cool experience doing it offsight. It would be a working vacation so to speak. Two of my favorite things..the Florida coast and flying.

Thanks for the input guys. I have only seen ads for PIC, never contacted them. I'll look into it. As far as using the schools plane vs. using mine was mearly a matter of not wanting to put hours on mine (I know it's only 20 hrs flying and the rest sim time with their program), but the wear and tear of having the instructor climbing in and out, missed approaches and just minor wear. I know what you are thinking.."What an anal SOB". I'm just super picky about my plane. That's just me. If I could ask people to pull their shoes off before getting in without being offended I would. Being very serious though I think they use 172 and 182 aircraft. A slower flying plane would help the learning curve and then apply what I learned in my plane..Maybe as another an option would be to do some/most in the schools plane and then transition with them into mine (not sure, but maybe an option). I'll check out the PIC program..One of the reasons I looked at Florida was it would be good experience to fly a different area. Doing it at home would be nice, but as a business owner in a smaller community you never seem to be on days off even when you have a very reliable staff. This is a city of about 15,000. I live about two miles from my health club business. If I was 1000 miles away locked in a hotel room to study I think I would have better focus, plus who does not like Florida in February

Any of you Florida guys know anything about Sunstate Aviation. I'm considering them for my instrument accelerated course in the spring. I know there are lots of pros and cons over these courses, but I'm really looking for input about the integrity of the school (or lack of). If you would prefer PM or email me at tpwinter@bellsouth.net . If you have input to post feel free. I'm thinking 14 days in Florida flying the coast with intense flying and learning sessions..Could be an intense, but great time. I plan to beat up (I mean fly the schools planes) and keep mine home..LOL. If the school has a bad rep then I'll look further. I swapped a few emails w/ them and checked the website. Still checking them out. There is a severe lack of CFIs in my area. My business is pretty well self sufficent (thanks to a very reliable staff) so my time is very flexible. Working toward my CFI would be excellent in my long term plans. I know it's a long ways down the road, but you gotta start somewhere. Any thoughts on the school?. Thanks, TW

I did forget about the 10K stipulation, I am well below that. As far as the B/C airspace, there is more of a chance I would transit that airspace once in a while. I really think it will be a "wait and see" situation.

All good points..Yikes!!! $9/gal. I think I would have to hang-up the headset.

Jose', We are on the same page..Since I already have the Zaon set up to display on the 696 and I already have the weather/xm subscription on the 696 I will primarily use it for those three applications. Zaon has designed a new plug in play package that will show aircraft transponder traffic (as done prior), but also lets the 1090 work off the same platform at the same time picking up and displaying ADS-B all on the same traffic page. The newest Garmin software 696 update released in May 2013 will allow for a full traffic page site picture like Jose's pic depicts. So I should get all traffic and weather on the 696. The downside is Zaon 1090 does not pick-up free govt weather (a 1090 downfall), but from what I understand the XM weather is updated just a tad quicker than the free government weather at this point, plus my coverage area is weak right now for GDL. I'll use the 750 for radio, transponder, flight plans and general navigation etc. The 696 placed next to it will display primarily weather and all traffic. In my opinion right now relying just on GDLs is not full protection (in my area anyway). Not until 2020 when all aircraft are required. The other day while checking progress my shop's owner did bring up a good point. We will be curious to see how much resistance there will be in GA when 2020 gets closer requiring everyone to be ADS-B. The ADS-B is currently based off of your transponder output coding (if I understand correctly?). The AP, avionics shop owner and I started talking about how many "fair weather" plane owners there are who have a plane in the hanger and fly just once in a while. You know the one in the end of the T-Hangers with bird poop all over it. How are they going to respond when they learn they HAVE to replace the old transponder with a new one capable of ADS-B ($3000-$3500+/-). Many of these folks have had these planes for decades and budget just enough for monthly hanger fees and to take it for annual. Maybe flown two or three times a year. There are several planes on my field that I know have not been moved since it's last annual. Might be lots of planes for sale in 2019. I predict there will be some sort of cheaper adaptable FAA approved add-on unit that will work in conjuction with old transponders. No worries though. I know my plane and my brother/sister Mooniacs will be up to date and flying safe . Head on a swivel. Just my thoughts.
