  1. 1.The best way to get a true airspeed picture is to do it with gps calculations doing 4 (N,E,S,W) headings. I would not rely on any gauge to give me a reliable TAS. 2.According to Mike Busch in one of his webinars 14.9 X FF = HP (assuming 8.5-1 compression and LOP), so 10gph is only 149hp or 52% power of a 285HP engine, I do not believe a V tail would go 170kts on 10gph unless you are up at about 18000 ft. 3.I had a V35 (1967) Bonanza with the IO520BB engine (285hp) and my gps true airspeed calc came out to be 171kts at 7500 ft 2500 rpm full throttle well ROP 4.I sold the Bo intending to go to a plastic plane, but ended up with the Eagle and am very pleased with it, much faster than the Bonanza. 5.The Bonanza has the tail wag I said I didn't notice when I owned it, but really noticed the diff with the Mooney. 6.Many V tails have an aft cg problem and it is difficult to load to gross without being outside the envelope. 7.Older Bonanzas like mine were not corrosion proofed at all and have magnesium ruddervators-corrosion can be a problem. 8.The gear is complicated and slower than Mooney gear. 9.The Bo controls are all cables, I prefer the pushtubes. 10.All this said, the Bo is a good plane and older ones can be had pretty cheap. I just like my Eagle more, but have may more amu's invested. Paul
  2. Yes they were Champion fine wires.
  3. I just posted this on the Modern Mooney plug discussion. For what its worth, my friend with a Columbia 400 just replaced his plugs and found 4 of the 12 fine wire plugs with cracked ceramic. He replaced with the massive type. See attached photo of the worst one. Strange, the engine was running fine.
  4. My friend just changed his plugs in a Columbia 400. 4 of the 12 fine wire plugs ceramic was cracked. See attached jpg of the one with the most damage. Strange the engine ran fine. He changed to the massive type.
  5. I find that my Eagle meets or exceeds the POH numbers and I am very pleased with it. Below are professional evaluations for the M20R/S airframe with different props showing cloes to POH numbers. The airframes and engines are virtually identical so the cruise should be very close to the same for a given RPM. The only variable that makes a difference is the prop. http://www.mooneypilots.com/mapalog/2005_M20R/2005_M20R.htm http://www.mooneypilots.com/mapalog/M20S_evaluation/M20S_eval.html http://www.mooneypilots.com/mapalog/M20R%20Evaluation/M20R.htm
  6. Cruiser, if you are not aware of "pixie holes" to lower the #5 CHT, it has been discussed before: http://mooneyspace.c...ixie#entry45073
  7. I looked into buying this plane last summer. I found an old ad from a legit broker that had sold it to Paul Krzeminski. The photos and description were the same in both ads. During my research, I found so many things that didn't make sense that I gave up on it. I did get in contact as did Rockydoc1 did with a different story but similar outcome. He wanted to use an escrow agent he knew and wanted all the money sent to that agent before seeing the plane and after I said I couldn't do that I never heard from him again.
  8. My Eagle has a three blade prop up front and does not have any weight in the tail. As bd32322 said it depends on the equipment and the Eagle is no different than the Ovation in that regard. Another way to look at the difference between the Eagle and Ovation: Original Eagle 244hp @2400rpm, if you cruise at 2400rpm the speed is identical in the Eagle or Ovation. In other words, at the same rpm, the Eagle and Ovation will have the same cruise speed with some small differences depending on the prop. The Eagle needs an STC to run at an rpm higher than 2400. The STC requires the correct prop and other small changes. As far as the fuel tank capacity, The Eagle again is the same as the Ovation, it just has a "neck" or tube at the top of the tank and is considered full at the bottom of the tube. You can fill it further, it just takes patience to fill it all the way to the top. With the higher hp (rpm), you do obviously gain in shorter takeoff distance and better climb which is not available with the original 244hp Eagle.
  9. The Moritz gauges are not unique to the Eagle, the Ovation has them also, at least in some years. You can see this if you look at panel pictures of Ovations for sale on Controller or TAP. I don't see any difference in the panel height of an Ovation and the EAgle.
  10. Check notams, they may have an advisory there when the tower closes. Also, the new charts are due to be updated I believe on the same day as inital closings. The new charts may be changed.
  11. I own a 2001 Eagle II, one of the last ones made. Mine came from the factory with most of the Ovation equipment. The Ovation and Eagle have the same engine, the IO550-G. The only difference is the rpm certified on the Eagle is 2400 and on the Ovation 1&2 it is 2500, then the Ovation 3 is 2700. The standard prop on the Eagle is a 2 blade certified for the 2400 rpm, the Ovation 1 & 2 could have a 2 or three blade for the 2500 rpm, and the Ovation3 has a Hartzell 3 blade which allows the 2700 rpm under STC installed at the factory. Any of the Eagles or Ovations can be STC'd to allow the 2700 rpm and 310 hp with the Hartzell prop. Also, the Eagle can be STC'd to the 280hp with the proper prop. I have compared my Eagle to Ovations I have seen and can tell no difference in the airframe and very little difference in the interior. As for noise, I cannot say since I have not had a ride in an Ovation. I fly with ANR headsets and of course have no noise problems. My Eagle came with speedbrakes, Oxygen, a 3 blade prop and avionics upgrades from the factory. The fuel capacity is another item that the POH says is considered full (75gal) at the bottom of a stanpipe in the tank.. In reality it will hold the same as the Ovation, you just have to be patient if you want the additional fuel. I have not had the need for the additional fuel, but I know the capacity is there if I want to take a long non-stop flight. You will find other past discussions on the Eagle if you search this forum. I am very happy with my Eagle.
  12. ORL is not on the final closure list.
  13. I didn't think we needed all those towers that were put up in the recent past. Virtually all of those are now on the chopping block, at least in my area. I do most of my flying out of two 4000 ft runway non-tower airports. These airports have jet traffic all the time, doesn't seem to make any difference, they will fly to the place that meets their needs. I don't avoid towers, but given a choice I will fly to the non tower every time. Also, the number of active pilots has been declining for decades (ref wiki). Fuel, plane, and maintence costs are way up. Seems to me that translates to less flying, at least in GA, and less need for those towers.
  14. thanks to Rob I think I found my problem. Paul
  15. I have already tried the stethoscope with someone pushing on the step. With the scope, the noise is transmitted through everything I touch. Not as easy as it seems to isolate the source. Paul
  16. I have a squeak in my landing gear and I cannot determine the source. I notice it when I step on the wing, or when I push up & down on the step, and also when going over a bump while towing the plane. Just and inquiry to see if anyone else has noticed this on their plane and discovered the source. I have been under the plane while someone else puts pressure on the step to cause the squeak, but still cannot determine where it is coming from. It was fully greased about two months ago. This is on a long body, but can't see that would make a difference. Paul
  17. My experience is similar on my long body M20S. I do trim for landing. On go around, There is a lot of pressure initially. At the slow speed, the trim doesn't feel as effective (fast) as at higher speeds. I hold the forward pressure with immediate electric trim, Positive rate, flaps to takeoff position (now the plane is just like takeoff, gear is down and flaps at takeoff), gear up, then rest of flaps. As always YMMV. Other High performance planes I have experience with (Twin Comanche, Bonanza) have similar traits, but I don't recall quite as much pressure as in the Mooney.
  18. It is my understanding that the Ovation 3 achieved its 310hp via the Midwest STC at the factory and is the IO550 (G) engine. I have been unable to find an Ovation 3 POH to verify this, but on advertised planes for sale on Controller, this is the case. The IO550 (G) is the engine on all Ovations and Eagles, just different RPM limits and different props depending on the model. All can be made to have the 310 hp same as the Ovation 3 with the Midwest STC.
  19. AmigOne, You are right, the Ipad is a little large and with my simple mount, you really can't get your fingers all the way around the yoke unless you move it all the way to the right side. An Ipad mini would work great, but then the plates would be smaller. I have only flown a few times with this mount and the grip hasn't bothered me. Just my experience, yours may vary. Paul
  20. My view of the panel is not obstructed. You can place ipad at different heights to accomodate your preference. I am tall at 6'2" and have the fully adjustable seats, so have no problem seeing the panel. Paul
  21. Nothing hits anywhere what you are looking at is the yoke at the forward stop. Even there nothing hits. Also, this is rough 1st try and I will be cleaning it up to make it look nicer.
  22. See attached pictures for my cheap solution to mounting the Ipad with minimal space required. The clamp is a 1 in EMT or conduit clamp from Home Depot with silicone rubber to reduce to the size needed. I used .060 Aluminum bent to desired position with a piece of foam behind it for stability. If I didn't have the map light switch, I would not need the washers. My Ipad has a plastic rear cover which has the velcro attached to it. Works great. Paul
  23. I was at KFMY yesterday to see friends and was surprised to see at least 15-20 Mooneys on the ramp. Does anyone know what group or gathering this was? Paul
  24. The short answer is that it is totally up to what the buyer and seller agree on. Your post brings up the question of why you would travel all that way to do and pre-buy and annual. If the buyer is in FL, then why would a return trip be necessary? If the buyer is not in FL, then the trip makes little sense. Paul
  25. I use a gustlock III which came with the plane when I bought it. It works great but pricey. www.gustlock.com Paul
