Spring Break Washington DC trip with Family
DrBill replied to richardheitzman's topic in General Mooney Talk
There are now 2 air and space museums.. Udvar Hazy and Smithsonian. UH is at Dulles (a hike from DC) Smith. is downtown. I had a job interview at Smith.. was a nice afternoon walking around talking technical with my prospective boss. I did get the job. That was in 84 ! Seems like yesterday. Got to visit Union Station, good food court there. Lots of activity and shops. The FBI was cool place to visit too. Saw their gun collection. The war memorials are good. Tomb of unknown soldier. Find a relative at National Cemetary. There you go.. A week should do it !! BILL -
Jet, Sounds like your friend got a good deal. I've not seen them installed for under $13k. I'm looking for something to replace the ADF. SIze wise. a 2nd 430 would be nice in that slot. BILL

Submit on the poll gives me an error... WOW.. 3 months already... Bill

I'm 210 and 6'2. No problem. Lots of leg room and I have to move the seat up about 4-6in to reach the pedals. Inseam is 34. I used to be 20 lbs heavier (before Mooney owner) and flew in a "C". Not an issue. You will be super fine in the long body models but can't say the same for the person sitting behind you. Bill

Scott, No I did not. I did not want the same steel thing. I have access to a machine shop and wanted to "play" some with the new Jet Milling Machine. I did just buy a fuel selector cover from the "Mooney store" though. I might play around with making a die and jig for that someday and make it out of an old coke can !! Bill

Try it again.. I just saved it on 2000 format... Thanks for the notice ! BILL

The data port on my old 89B uses a rather unique 1/4 inch phone like plug on one end and a 9 pin serial on the other. I bought the cable for $50 from King when I had it installed. I now use it to program a friends 89b. I use a laptop with USB to serial adapter. After trying a few, King recommended a KEYSPAN adapter and it works just fine. Bill

Thank Mitch, Your plane has the HP to lift a STEEL ONE! !! BILL

When I bought my 65 Mooney the latch was original and bent all to heck. I straightened it out and it was working ok but it really looked like a mess. I finally completed the replacement. I took a 1x1 piece of Aluminum and milled out a close part leaving a minimum of 1/8 in. It works great. I have an Autocad drawing and a PDF of the drawing that I'll post. Here is the links for the PDF and DWG files: http://www.creativecomputersolutions.com/flying/baggage.pdf http://www.creativecomputersolutions.com/flying/baggage.dwg The drawing could be dimensioned better but it works.... The Electronic Chart Plot thickens...
DrBill replied to scottfromiowa's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
If they charged $1 per download of a chart from DAY 1, this would not be an issue. Organize the downloads the same as paper. AFD, Approach charts by area, etc. Make it $1 a download. I have no problem paying $4-5 / mo for what I use and if I wanted the whole US then I would expect a break. Like the AVWEB arrticle says, $5mil/ 300K users is cheap. BILL -
Here here.... I too had a pair of 20XL, upgraded to 30-3G and then upgraded to Zulu. Great support all along. BILL

I flew non-complex aircraft for 20 years. I got the complex signoff in an Arrow after 7 hours total time in it with a friend. Then a few years later I bought my Mooney M20E. The transistion required by the insurance company was 10 hrs dual, 10 hrs solo before passengers. I'm a quick learner (solo'd in 4 hrs) but I was glad I had the extra time to really get the whole process of gear, prop, throttle "burned" in. I think it made me a much more confident pilot in this new plane not to mention the added avionics I now have with the 430 and an STEC autopilot. I really like the manual gear since the emergency procedure is same as normal. The Arrow has a more complex emergency gear process and some owners are reluctant to practice it as they fear it will "hurt" their gear system. A friend with a "C" recommended I get and E or F and I'm glad he did. I am not dissappointed. I feel like I'm flying a rocket ship each time I get in and take off. Things happen so much faster that you have to be prepared and don't let the plane get ahead. Bill 1965 M20E

1st annual in the Atlanta area...or beyond!
DrBill replied to mulro767's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
WOW... my guy charges $50 and I think he's fair. Wilgrove Aircare. www.wilgroveairport.net Did my preby and annual. Maintains 3-4 other Mooneys. 8A6, just East of CLT. Bill BILL -
Pre-buy inspection...absolutely necessary?
DrBill replied to jeckford's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Skyking and I agree. Get a prebuy from someone who does not maintain the A/C. Mine cost $300. If 9mos since last annual you can move it to an annual if you go ahead with the buy. Depending on the year. SB208 is at the top of my list. Good Luck.. First good thing... you joined this... BILL -

I'm a new Mooney owner (3 months). I flew for 4 years before becoming an owner of a Beech Sundowner. I flew that plane all up and down the East coast and primarily bought it for my Instrument Rating. When my partner wanted to get out I used that an a reason to upgrade. I have over 500 hrs TT and 300 of that in the Beech which I flew for 7 years. I bought the Model E based upon a recommendation from a pilot and C owner at my airport. I am NOT disappointed. The E is a BIG change from the Sundowner which is very similar to the 172, Cherokee 180 and others. If I had to do it over again, I would do the same thing. Get some experience in a fixed gear A/C, get your instrument, and work into the complex aircraft (Arrow, Mooney, etc). Then buy one with everything you want. or think you want. Worked for me for < $50K BILL

Newbe with Hot start question
DrBill replied to Gunderbear's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I too have a 65 E model. Any starts are a Non-issue. Hot Starts. (try to shutdown at 1000 RPM and leave throttle where it is). Get in and DONT TOUCH ANYTHING. No fuel pump, no nothing. Turn on Master Swithc and "CLEAR" then start. When the engine catches (2-3 props in mine), smoothly enrich the mixture. I did it three times this last weekend. It just WORKS. Bill Mint Hill, NC -
I concur with carusoam. The regulator is not controlling the generator properly. The regulator's job is to control the field winding of the generator. When the field is grounded, the generator trys to put full output. When grounded through a resistor, it provides partial output. The electronic regulator will control the field current to maintain 13.6-14.1 v on the power bus with the engine at 1000 rpm or more. Given the wiring is solid and we have to "assume" it is since it was just worked on, then the regulator must be at fault. For those of your with Alternators, the field terminal is similar operation however the alternator will produce maximum output when the field is tied to 12V (not grounded like a generator). Hence a regulator on an alternator equipped plane varies the voltage to the field terminal to control the output current. With the plane running at 1000 rpm or more, a voltmeter on the field terminal, the bus and the generator/alternator output will quickly identify the problem device. Bill

Alternate to IPAD for Electronic Flight Bag (EFB)
DrBill replied to DrBill's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Regarding WING X.. From their website. Approach charts yes, plus other features like AFD, Route planning and more. Good chart here: http://www.hiltonsoftware.com/PlatformFeatures.pdf Note: WingX for Android currently does not include Sectionals, IFR Enroute charts, or the Moving Map. We're working on adding these features. -

DrBill replied to DrBill's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
No geo ref approach plates in this version. I suspect it's coming. I don't have enough experience with it but I don't think it does fuel prices nor performance. I was looking for an electronic chart. It does display my POH (PDF I MADE) nicely. You can check out the features at www.navigatorapp.com. Here's a link to the users guide: http://www.naviatorapp.com/help/naviatorusermanual.pdf -
Alternate to IPAD for Electronic Flight Bag (EFB)
DrBill replied to DrBill's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Quote: eldeano I like the size, and the external storage. A little limited by a slower processor and decent but not great battery life. Also internal storage is very low. But that having been said as long as it can run your software, and perform the mission that you want, then it is all good. I really want to try a devise of this size, because I could yoke mount it. The price is certianly right. I assume since it has bluetooth you can use an external GPS. May be worth a shot. Thanx for the info.
