Alternate to IPAD for Electronic Flight Bag (EFB)
DrBill replied to DrBill's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
"DOC" version now available for those w/o newer word http://www.creativecomputersolutions.com/flying/VIZIOTABLETPIREP.doc PDF version too: http://www.creativecomputersolutions.com/flying/VIZIOTABLETPIREP.pdf -
The M20E I recently purchased had the Airtex 406.

I will do mine every 50 hours.. Oil and filter as I did with previous plane. No analysis. I would add the analysis after a top or major OH or if I had a history of analysis to compare. I've got 25 hrs on the plane since I purchased it with an annual (and oil change).

Just local. trying out the new EFB so I can post a pirep on Sunday.

Portable Electronic Approach Plates
DrBill replied to MB_M20F's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I think I found a reasonable elecronic flight bag. At the airport today, a friend had a Vizio tablet (Walmart $200). On it he had NAVIGATOR. ($5/mo or $50/yr). Any chart you want, sectional, IFR, Approach, Airport Information.. name it. All there. Fast response too. I was impressed. Ordered one tonight and hope to pick up on Monday from Walmart near work. I'll post Flight Review when done but he let me play with it awhile and it really does everything the IPAD does for only $200 + $50. I figure go monthly as I usually only need charts every other month so that's only $30 per year. Has some pretty good specs on it. He has had it 2 weeks and it looks pretty good. Stay tuned. DrBILL -
No where special for me. Just a few laps around the area looking at color. Dr Bill

Orlando airport and FBO recomendations?
DrBill replied to carusoam's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I second the motion on ORL. Stopped there one time with my Sundowner and got a Hertz car no problems. Felt like I was a jet jockey. Dr BIll -
Quote: triple8s I made mine from 2 inch foam insulation, even put a little cord on them to connect them together, just one thing........they're pink :-/

Quote: GeorgePerry Charlotte/Douglas CLT controllers on the East coast are notorious for doing this. They vector GA aircraft miles off course to keep them well clear of Class B airspace...

My set were purchased from Aircraft Spruce and they fit pretty good in my 65 "E". Not much you can do around the generator pulley. The two I got are mirrors (left/right). The right (pilot) fits good, the left is good except around the gen pulley. But it does keep the critters out. I'm making a tailcone cover from ripstop nylon myself. I'll post the drawings when I get it done and fitted. Dr Bill

Congratulations ! I remember mine like it was yesterday (2003). Every cross country I fly IFR. Keeps me up and used to the conversation. The next big hurdle is your first solo approach to minimums in IMC. You'll never forget that either. ENJOY ! Dr. Bill

Concord NC (JQF) has a fly-in with Breakfast on Sat and a lot of activities. A B17 will be there on Friday giving rides. Don't have a kitchen pass yet so I don't know if I'm going Sat or Sunday. There is a fly in at Greenville SC and Savanah GA too. A B17 will be at Savanah as part of their festivities. It's here at JQF today and tomorrow. Dr Bill M20E N5612Q

Hangar vs Tiedown,,,,,,,,,,,justification
DrBill replied to gregwatts's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Find another aiport. Hangars at my airport rent for $150/mo (shadeports actually) so I put up my own "portable" hangar for $5k, 7 years ago and pay the tiedown fee, now $55/mo (was $45 when I put it up). I would not want to leave my airplane out for sun, rain and especially hail. Dr Bill 65 M20E N5612Q -
I was lucky to sit next to Bill Wheat in the exhibit area for about an hour chatting. Learned a lot from him and even more during his seminar. Definitely was worthiwhile attending. So far, am not home yet, my arifare from CLT-KSAT and back has MADE me $100 NET ! I just got a $300 voucher to take a later flight and go first class on a $300 original ticket. Got a $100 voucher on the way here for taking a later flight. If I get another $300 from DFW to KCLT This trip will have cost me NOTHING ! Dr Bill N5612q

About 20 of us went to David's place for dinner Thursday and we had some great food and good time. Thanks David for the hospitality. Dr Bill 65 "E", N5612Q

Jolie won best E model.. Can't remember the rest. I'm sitting here at KSAT, This has been a great deal weekend. On the way over, I got a $100 voucher for being bumped from DFW to SAT and arrived earlied than my original flight. Now I volunteered to get a later flight and I got a $300 voucher for a 2 hour delay. Total $400 on a $300 ticket and I'm not done yet ! I could get bumped going from DFW to CLT ! I learned so much at the convention and it was great to meet some of the "voices" here on the forum. I sure hope to attend next year. Dr Bill 65 E, N5612Q

what other aviation forums do you visit?
DrBill replied to rbridges's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
As a charter member of the Beech Aero Club (Baby Beech club), they have a forum similar to this and it is GREAT for the passing of information relative to procedures and parts for those airplanes. Since Beech stopped making them, some parts are hard to come by (e.g. Landing gear heavy stuff) but the group always finds for those in need. I suspect that unless Mooney re-opens for parts at least, we will be in the same situation in a few years. Some simple Beech parts are quoted as $3000-4000 and lead times of 12-18 months. Many can be found in scrap yards or re-manufactured for less (yoke bushings for example). Those who rely on a mechanic to find the part may find themselves waiting for a year and paying $3k for Beech to re-make the part. These "type club" forums are invaluable for passing the information we see. This forum is especially nice since it splits the vintage from the "new" and one does not have to trudge thru posts that are unrelated. It's only as good as it's mentors. Keep up the GREAT work ! Dr BILL -
I'll start the topic but let's leave this open for those NOT going to MAPA Homecoming since there are separate topics for that event. This way perhaps you will meet up with another Mooney owner over a coffee or lunch. I'll be back in the air next weekend, destination yet to be determined but probably North again since the color last weekend was poor. I'm going to MAPA but I know many of you are not. I'll be watching this thread for great suggestions and reports. FLY SAFE! Dr Bill 65 M20E N5612Q

During my prebuy, the mechanic filled both tanks. Then we found the left fuel sensor leaked so he drained it into multiple 5 gal plastic cans. Then he put it back in when done. Did not waste a gallon. Gone thru 150 gal since then. No issues. Dr Bill

Let's see if there is any commonality. You never know when you will find another "MOONEYSPACER" at an airport. I'm heading to North- North Carolina. Going to look at tree color. WX is expected to be CAVU. Sugar Valley, Elkin, Statesville will be my stops. There is a WINGS event at Hickory but that' s on Sat and my kitchen pass is on Sunday. I usually leave 8A6 around 0930. Where you flying this weekend ? October 7-8-9
DrBill replied to DrBill's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Had a great flight to Darlington, Hartsville and Camden (all SC). Saw another Mooney at Camden from a distance. Was home by 12:30. 2 hrs of flying, 3 new airports and 17 gal of gas. 2 more hours to go and I can carry passengers. The Camden flyin is Saturday only. The gal on duty said all but 3 were gone by 5pm Saturday. Have to remember that next year. Next week hope to go North, Mocksville, Mt. Airy, etc. Color should be good then too. I'll start another topic on Wednesday for next weekend. Back to work (UGH) tomorrow. Dr BIll -
