Mooney instructor within 2 mooney hours of MA
gwcolwell replied to bd32322's topic in General Mooney Talk
There's a CFII in Laconia, NH. Took my Mooney training with him.. Don't know how "Mooney specific" you desire. He does the bi-plane rides over the area. 603-250-6184 -
Just finished cleaning my lh tank(s). Started sealing yesterday. Know what your up against. It was my first time also. Patience, perseverance and multiple four letter words, again, appear to be the most valued human traits when cleaning Mooney tanks. Used Polygone 310 to soften the sealant. It creats a "snot" like substance from the old sealant and is miserable to clean down to shiny aluminum. After cleaning with 310, plastic scrapers, scotchbrite pads, brass & stainless steel tooth brushes, a vacuum cleaner and compressed air blow gun the tank compartments are as gorgeous as those seen online from "weep no more" ads. Found really cheap "brake clean" in aerosol cans to be most helpful during the final cleaning. MEK was also helpful. Found Polygon 310 was the most irritating to my skin. Even when using disposable gloves, the Polygone would seek it's way through the material and start pealing the first 6 layers of skin from my hands. Took several weeks to bring my hands back to normal. Am self employed truck dealer, so am used to working in dirty environments with my hands. Have about thirty hours of my own time(weekends only) in cleaning. Have an I/A helping/overseeing and he has probably 6 hours in cleaning/sealing todate. Going back this AM and seal some more. Used PR 1440 A 1/2 in SEM kits to do the sealing thusfar. Found that it helps to dilute it ever so slightly with MEK to brush it on the backside of the access panels. A/P used it striaght out of the caulking gun with a brush( half the bristles were cut off to make it less pliable). Only sealed what was accessible from the top panels yeaterday. Going to seal from the bottom panels today. Have a heated hanger two thids the way up the Maine coast in KBHB. Left the heat on 50 deg f last night. Have the wing tarped with heavy mil plastic. Put two small ceramic heaters under the wing to hasten the cuiring process. Can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Give me a shout if you want to expand your vocabulary.

Looking for quality references on engine overhauler
gwcolwell replied to gwcolwell's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
No comments on either of the two concerns mentioned above? -
The subject appears to be mute. Just got an email back from M-20. Business is for sale. Not interested in selling another kit.

Looking for anyone who has purchased and installed a TN from M-20 turbos.

Immediately upon taking possession of N862HL, my instructor & I flew around the pattern and tried to land. Landing gear did not deploy. Tried several times,,,no luck. Dropped the gear manually and put the new purchase back in ther hanger for the seller to repair. A switch in the LH landing gear mechanism was found to have had burned/arched contacts. Don't remeber what the switch was called.

1974 M20F Exec. IO3601A1A Have had an oil leak for last several years. Getting worse. Time for an annual so I dyed the oil, ran the engine, and shot it with a black light. Oil leak is coming from between the crankcase halves, near the front of the engine, between the starter & alternator. Engine has approx 1800 hours. #2 CHT is consistently 50 deg hotter than all others (which are even) during cruise. Have tested the CHT probes for 2 & 4 cylinders. they react the same to the same heat source. Have seen a strange discoloration on a few cooling fins on #2 cylinder around the exhaust port. No other cylinders exhibit this discoloration. Would appreciate any wisdom/experience.

Have a M20F Exec, 1974 vintage. If it will fit, would be interested

From my research, am in need of STC #SA141WE for installation in the M20F and STC #SE32WE for installation on the IO360A1A. In addition am in need of permissions to use this system from the STC owner of record. STC owner of record is no longer alive, in business, or otherwise unable to "SELL" the "permission" to use on my plane. To receive "permission" I need the FAA's written blessing. To receive this blessing I convince the IA to ask the FAA district office for permissions. Sounds like a lot of people to pay off.

Please educate me on STC's and 337's

Would like to pursue the purchase of this if still available. Thanks, gwcolwell

Your assumption is correct, 1974 M20F Exec. N862HL. Have sent you an email with phone numbers. Will contact you tonight after work. Look forward to chatting.

Am planning an engine overhaul/replacement within the next 200 hours. Have a 1974 M20F Exec. Have toyed with the idea of an IO390 upgrade. Now am of the opinion the cost/benefit is minimal when the ultimate goal is higher altitudes and faster overall speeds. Have chatted with a gentleman at Aerotech. He's of the opinion there is no detriment to the engine if utilized properly and has had little experience with failures associated with installations of TN's. Questions: a.) Anyone on MooneySpace.com have experience with TN modification? b.) Is there more than one STC for this modification? Thanks for any input, gwcolwell

Have 1974 M20F Exec. Looking to upgrade. Would like to know more. -
Have posted here before with questions/concerns about resealing my tanks(M20F Exec 1974). You bring up an interesting point,,,,anyone have knowledge of proper procedures to be followed when stripping/resealing? Have querried a most knowlegeable gentleman in Florida and I understood him to say that one of the last steps was to coat the inside of the tank completely. After reading the above post, am not so sure that even experienced people are aware of proper procedures.

Similar experience with 1974 M20F. Micro switch in lh landing gear was at fault. Switch contacts burned causing ntermittent contact when gear down.
-
Similar issues. M20F Exec. In real life I (and my brother) own/operate a medium/heavy truck franchise. I run the shop. We use an oil dye (cummins part # 3376891).. This dye is very concentrated and appears bright yellow under a black light. Small bottle normally treats 10 gallons of oil. I use the whole bottle in my Mooney and have successfully identified multiple leak areas successfully. Have addressed most with the exception of the one between the crankcase halves.

Your collective wisdom and experience is overwhelming. More confused now than prior to the post. Am presently at Greenville Seaplane Fly In. Have asked same questions to those I know and several gentlemen I don't. One of the vendors displaying at Greenville is an FBO at PWM. He indicates he is capable of addressing my issue by reseal. Initially sounds very good. Expense of the job was estimated slightly less than either Willmar or Ft Lauderdale. Transport cost to PWM are minimal. New issue? Unfamiliar with the quality of his work. Internal wing damage is not real palitable. Nor is repeat repairs.

Have 1974 M20F Exec. Have been on the fence trying to decide what to do and need some experienced advice. Tanks are leaking and staining wing. Need to either reseal or install bladders. Problems are as follows. a.) Live in Maine. Only two people I can find to do the reseal are WeepNoMore (Willmar, Minn) and Wetwingologists(Ft Lauderdale, Fla). Both appear to be very competant. However the cost and inconvenience of transport make the total bill approximately $10k. b.) bladders are an option. 8 bladder system is $8k. Installation 40-50 hrs. Even at $50./hr I'm back at the $10k figure(plus transport costs to Pennsylvania and back) Have mechanical gauges in tops of wings. Am told that if bladders are installed, those have to go. Considering the in tank senders have been overhauled twice and worked for only a month afterward, don't really want to do away with the mecahnical gauges. c.) Can reseal the tanks myself. Have the ability. Time is an issue(always). Lack of chemical product knowledge and procedure knowledge are an issue. Would like to have someone around, looking over my shoulder while the process is taking place. Would like someone experienced to chat with. Please advise.
