ARI vs LASAR cowl closure Mod
Ned Gravel replied to KJATCt's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I think the Lopresti cowl mod and the SWTA one both come with an STC that allows the replacement of the doghouse for all models that still have them. I do not think either the ARI cowl STC includes it and I do not think the LASAR one is STC'd yet. Otherwise, at least in Canada, simply replacing the doghouse with the more familiar baffling is not legal outside of the "owner maintenance" category (non-certified aircraft). One of the other advantages of changing over the doghouse to the other baffling, is the movement of the oil cooler to behind number 4 cylinder. -

Mark: I feel for you. When I bought my E model, my MSC went to hunt for the reason why the former owner's mechanic had welded a crack in one side of the spinner. It turns out that the previous mechanic had received permission from someone in Transport Canada (our FAA) and then gone ahead with something that Hartzell had not provided any documentation on (for this type of repair). So my MSC went to Hartzell - and they were very clear. There did not exist any engineering data to support the welding of any cracks in this spnner. Hartzell would not support the repair. So we decided to exchange the spinner with a serviceable spare from his shop (short of cash). Six months later that spinner developed a crack as well, and this caused the unauthorised departure of part of the spinner in flight as I was climbing through 4000' - a piece that was a little bigger than yours. The bang scared the living daylights out of me and I started planning for an off-airfield approach. A few minutes later, I requested and received priority for the active runway from the tower. No need to declare an emergeny, but worrying nonetheless. In the end, no incident, but the hole in the spinner, and the scratches on the cowl told the story. A new one was installed during the next annual. It cost $1,000 Cdn or so. Last year (two years after the new spinner was installed) my MSC powder coated it during the overhaul. Safe and looks great.

ARI vs LASAR cowl closure Mod

There is a story someplace, don't remember where, that if you put a "guppy mouth" Mooney in a wind tunnel, some of the little streamers on the inside of one of those older openings (like mine) will face backwards (as if the airsream is moving from back to front). Roy Lopresti is quoted as saying (while he was either Director of Engineering or Vice President at Mooney) that the older style intakes were a "study in inefficiency" of aerodynamic design. Having said all that, I am still running between 320 and 350 deg F on my CHTs because of the care taken in the re-manufacture of my doghouse following last year's overhaul. So my only real problem with my current set up, is the drag and the resulting loss of airspeed. Opinions vary on how much. Currently between 2 and 8 knots?? -
Removing control yokes on '67 F model

Ah yes..... The old hidden-so-I-can't-find-it set screw trick. That will defeat the "bigger persuader" approach every time. -

Dan: I would suggest a "persuader" or the 5 lb adjusting tool, but that would prove that I know absolutely nothing about what you are doing. Which is true. But, since I own a '65E with the intent to possibly replace my yolks with the newer style that has spots for all the buttons in them, I am very keen on learning how you actually do this. Good luck. -
In Pre-Purchase Inspection - Need Help!
Ned Gravel replied to dmevans's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I would say to go for it too. Decent looking aircraft. Useful avionics. Price is right, even if you have to do a re-seal. If it turns out to be only the sending unit - so much the better. -
legallegend Start here: http://www.mooneyevents.com/chrono.htm. On that page you will see other model chronology listings such as the changes to the C models and the J models over the years. The overview chart from the Mite to the Ovation 2 is the blue chart that goes down the page. This page also points to the pdf timeline for the M20 series at: http://www.mooneyevents.com/mooneychart.pdf Hope this helps

Quote: JimR Are you sure about that? I thought that I remembered reading recently on one of the Mooney lists that it was steel in older Mooneys and stainless steel in newer ones. Jim

Quote: mooney27239 I have had my M20E for about 3 years and the whole time I have had it I always have to lift the left wing in flight. ...... ...... Just can't keep the darn thing flying straight.

Done. Repaired. I even helped with the painting and putting the aileron back on. Back to being beautiful again.

Quote: yellowjacket Ned, I have the same concern about drilling more holes in the steel cage. Where did you get your holder? Jim

Quote: danb35 More accurately, most alternators won't start charging without some voltage on the bus.

I just bought a replacement housing for mine and had it replaced last week during my annual. Haven't seen the bill yet, but the "housing" is less expensive than the replacement of the whole compass. When I talked to the shop about modifying its position, one of their fears was making new holes in that structural member. So the new housing, which looks exactly like the old one, is now mounted - in the same place with two nut-and-bolt fasteners.

Quote: m20edrvr I replaced the vibrating contact regulator on my 65e year before last, and replaced with a Zeftronics. At that time I also had the generator serviced/cleaned up. A problem I have experienced, both before and after replacement, is that voltage will drop to 9.8-10.0V on final causing my GNS430 to trip and reset. I am seriously considering replacing the generator with a plane-power upgrade on annual to see if this fixes it. Thoughts?

Russ: Just sent you an e-mail. I was still working with the original plan for your arrival nearer the 28th or 29th. Ute and I are wheels up around 9:30 am on the 25th to Sudbury to drop her off - then for a noon departure out of Sudbury to Summerside PEI for the COPA AGM with my instrument rated friend. My plan was to be back in Ottawa on the 27th and be ready to receive you the next day or the day after that. I really hope that we can still get together in Ottawa. If not, are you planning on going all the way to Summerside on the 25th? Do I smell another Mooney Ambassador event?

My AME suggested VIM.

ARI vs LASAR cowl closure Mod
Ned Gravel replied to KJATCt's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Quote: Mitch Hi Ned and KJATCt. If you have, or if you do remove the doghouse cover/baffling that is in good shape, I would be very interested in purchasing from you. Jolie's baffling is suffering and needs some replacement parts. Please let me know and thank you. 805 305-1506 [cell] -
ARI vs LASAR cowl closure Mod

KJATCt: I would be interested in finding out the differences in CHT caused by taking out the doghouse and replacing it with baffling. With a modified cowl (+ a pound or two, - weight of doghouse, + weight of baffling) I am not certain there would be any significant weight increase or decrease fwd of the firewall, but I would like to be sure that the aiflow over the cylinders is not adversely affected by the loss of the doghouse. -
Crossing the border shot below. Talking to Boston Centre, who handed me off to Montreal Centre, who had me change my squawk code about 15 miles before I crossed the actual border. This picture was taken about 3 minutes later, while still in US airspace. The border between Quebec (Canada) and Maine (y'all) is the black line on the display.

Not yet, but soon. Sooner in Canada apparently, but the deadline has not yet been announced. See http://www.copanational.org/ELTUpdateMay112010.cfm.

I'm with Lyle on this. I track the costs too, but I know full well that I do this because I love to do it. Sometimes, I get reimbursed for the business use of my personal aircraft (gas and parking fees), but until I get my commercial licence, that is as far as that can go. Maybe next year, with some of the advantages that Parker has - using his Mooney for "hire or reward" beyond his obvious love of flying, and flying a Mooney to boot!! Besides, I am 57 and my major overhaul was completed last year. If I do the math, it is not likely to recur during the remainder of my ownership of this aircraft. Unless I turn out to be as good as Bob Hoover??

Happened last fall, and the vibration was almost too faint to feel. Almost You can see the fence post that the wingtip rubbed during a bit of manoeuvering by the gas pumps. I used silicone to plug the holes and prevent moisture from getting into the wing. Yhe local AME looked it over and give his OK for airworthiness. It did not cause me any problems over the last 5 months, but it has been hard to look at. It holds memories of a lack of attention. Replacement of the plastic cover was about $20.00. The wing skin parts from Mooney were about .75 AMU. Now it is being properly repaired. Pics tell the story. Lesson learned (the hard way).
