I am about to publish a new website for pilot reviews of aviation services - mechanics, paint shops, interior shops, etc. Will also have destinations of interest and more. Not looking to compete with great websites such as mooneyspace.com but would like to have a list of maintenance shops, for example, that can be accessed easier than searching message boards and will allow for user reviews. I am looking for someone who has knowledge of html, css and java script to help finish the site. Would like someone who is an aviation enthusiasts rather than getting someone off the street. If interested, please PM me. bgpilot1 Thanks! Barry

I have step by step instructions (6 pages) on how to completely strip and reseal a tank along with what you will need. Feel free to pm me and I can provide the Word doc via email. Based on experience, if you have just the original sealant the job in not too difficult. But if you have multiple layers of sealant over old sealant, the job will test your patience! Regards, Barry

Davtron has one. Part number M800M. You can purchase through aircraftspruce. You will need a machined part to make it fit. I was able to buy the adapter from Lake Aero/Laser but they may be out. You may want to try SW Texas or ask Laser for the specs. You may also find an original quartz clock from Wentworth, used. This applies to the M20 series, don't know about the rest. Regards, Barry

Thoughts on Internet Mission Planning / FBO tool?
bgpilot1 replied to Buster1's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
There are many sites that do an ok job for destinations. Not many that have good listings of mechanics, insurance info and financing. check your pm messages for more ideas. Regards, Barry -
I'm curious as to why the shock assembly, P.99 of the M20 parts manual item 21, 530028-501 was removed from the aircraft per a letter sent out by Mooney years ago. Seems like it would help. Any ideas? Thanks, Barry

What could cause the red and green gear indicator lights in a 67 M20F, johnson bar, to test ok but not illuminate otherwise? Am I correct in assuming that the red light should be on whenever the gear is up? Green light on whenever the gear is down. Half way through the annual. Going to jack the plane up tomorrow and test everything...will probably wish I had the one piece belly but that is for another day! Thanks, Barry

Permit me one moment of humor here. No hangar is complete without at least a case of beer. This "tool" is obviously best utilized after any maintenance or flying has been done for the day! Add to that a couple of chairs and pilots who can tell you what, when and how to fix your problems. : ) B

I've got the same issue with my M20F. Aluminum left side, old plastic right side with the post lights inop. Nulites are installed underneath so I am in the process of evaluating options to create a matching aluminum right side. So far, my intentions are to create a cadd drawing from measurements taken from the plastic overlay and send the drawing to The Avionics Shop in Tacoma Narrows where they will machine fabricate an aluminum overlay to match the specs. I anticipate a cost of around $400 - estimate. I'll update the group once my research and work is complete. Let me know if there are any questions. Barry

Of note, check the VRef values on AOPA and you will see that you won't get your money back from adding a new Garmin or other avionics. If you plan to keep the plane for a while no big deal, or get the plane at a discount. The Aspen Pro sells for less but will be closer to 14k installed. If buying a pre 70s M20, make sure the panel has the space for what you want. The center stack is limited in space. The depth at the top is less than what is required for most radios so you will have to move them down - leaving about 1 1/2 inches of clearance. Barry

I've bought two planes and have done a lot of research on this topic. Also spoken to state agencies in WA and TN. All but about 10 states will charge you "use" tax on an airplane purchase. This is typically between 6 and 9 percent of the "value" or sale price of the airplane. You are liable for use tax once the plane has been in the state for over 30 days. Also, some states like WA require that you register the plane with them within 30 days. WA charges an airplane yearly fee of around 100 bucks. Some states such as Oregon and Montana do not charge use tax but lets say you keep the plane in OR but are in and out of WA for more than so many days per year - they may try to collect use tax from you. I believe Florida and Maine do the same. Also, if you bought your plane and keep in in OR without paying use tax, then move to a state that requires use or sales tax, you are liable for the use tax unpaid or the percentage over what you paid in a previous state - based on the "value" of the plane at the time you bring it into the state. There are a couple of exceptions. Also, if you keep a plane in a state for maintenance or repairs you are typically not liable for the use tax. For example, if you bought a plane in Arkansas, kept it there for 3 months for repairs - not liable, but when you bring it into your home state - you are liable for tax within 30 days of bringing it into your home state. Message me if you want more specifics. [i'm not a tax or lawyer guy so these are just guidelines from my research!] For your specific state, you can go to their gov website and search for sales & use tax. Tax is paid to your home state if an out of state purchase is made. In this case, the seller is not responsible for charging. Regards, Barry

An updated panel configuration makes a lot of sense as well. Then there are the fuel tanks - take a close look for leaks and how many times previous owners have added sealant over sealant. I'm in the middle of buying all the brushes and paint stripper in Memphis to clean out one tank and it is no joy!

Any Des Moines mooney pilots on here
bgpilot1 replied to Scott Aviation's topic in General Mooney Talk
There is an FBO on the Des Moines, IA field that has a Mooney 201 on the line for use by the club. You may want to contact them as they should have a few pilots that are familiar with Mooneys. http://desmoinesflyingclub.com/airplanes.html Barry -

Has anyone replaced their main landing gear assist springs on a pre 201? Wondering the difficulty here, where I could purchase the spring and approximately how much. I've got some rust on it but not too bad. M20F. Thanks, Barry

Then there was some guy who did an 8 hour pre buy inspection at BFI on my Cherokee 140. He told me the carpet was dirty and a lot of other items to make me lower the price! I forgot his name...quickly.

John Reed at Boeing Field, Reed Aviation, doesn't do a lot of Mooney work but he is great and has many Bonanza customers. I was impressed with the level of service I received at Harvey Field at the shop. Phil owns the shop and airport and can probably help you as well. Great guy. There are 2 shops on KPAE Paine Field that do annuals on Mooneys. I've heard of several people using them. I've got one more guy who is a boeing mechanic and works out of his car. He maintains my friends twin comanchee and he is really happy with his work. And I believe there is a Mooney service center just north of Seattle. Check the mooney site for authorized service centers in your area. pm me if you want the contact info for those above. Barry

Full sized bikes in J with split/fold rear seat?
bgpilot1 replied to LuvFlying's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Montague makes a full size folding mountian bike. I have one and it has served me well. Would fit in the old Cherokee 140 but haven't tried it through the Mooney door yet. http://www.montagueco.com/ -
Thinking about replacing the bendix starter in my M20F. I believe there are two from Sky Tec that are options. One is the Fly-Weight LS and the other is the High-Torque Inline. Any experience or opinions here? Thanks, Barry
