  1. Hi All, Looking to replace main gear tires (probably the result of being a bit too compliant with early turn-offs). Along the way thinking about replacing tubes or at least buying a new one to have handy on trips or if one of the current tubes is not right when changing the tires. Question: Is the following picture from a "straight stem" tube? This is a Goodyear Flight Mate tube in a Michelin Air tire. I've heard the Air Stop tubes are good, but they weren't available when I needed them last year. Also any opinion on the Michelin vs. Goodyear tube is welcome... Thanks, David
  2. I remember the green 100/130 at a military aero club overseas. Is it even still sold in the US? Not sure if it's a better distillate as well or simply contains more lead.
  3. Clever! Closer to the head. May I ask where you're mounting them? Side, center, floor etc.
  4. You forgot taxes on carbon and all other externalities (including bad tie selection, public playing of the accordion and intentional facsimiles thereof, establishment of internment camps, and forced erasure of all Saturday Night Live episodes after Jon Lovitz, and probably unlicensed no-back springs. Well-played though. You got me for a moment.
  5. With only 50 min and those numbers, agree still has to break in. My two recent episodes of breaking in new cylinders were each an initial careful 2 hr flight with the QA mechanic taking down numbers. It was faster the second time for unclear reasons. We also modulated the power every 15 min between two higher power settings. I also ran higher power settings than 75% for this, in part due to a misunderstanding of what 75% was by the mechanic. After temps drop, then cruise ROP at least at 65-75% until oil consumption stabilizes. FWIW I dragged this out the first time by adding oil too readily (consumption is higher at higher fill levels). Right now things seem pretty stable around 15hrs. HTH David
  6. Tend to have the same initial reaction as @Brandt. Plus that is over the Mike Busch 380F rule-of-thumb, so high post-breakin. How many hours since swap?
  7. That looks like great value for money. Their CO detector also. That is on my upgrade short-list (I have a little external Forensics unit which is great, but doesn't log via the G1000). Wrote to ask if theirs interfaces with the G1000 easily.
  8. Ah now that just fits right in with aviation. I've been looking for a timer, too. A nice multi-function panel unit (e.g. coupled with a CO meter or USB port) would be nice but cost a bit more. The avionics have lots of timer options but on the G1000 it's too much button-pressing and heads-down. Probably going with a backlit version of my old kitchen time. Agree on the value of analog sweeps. One of those older Walthams would be useful and aesthetically-pleasing.
  9. ^this G1000 has the same (selectable how it displays). There are commonly windshifts down low even on normal-ish days where I fly and this keeps you from mentally locking onto a forecast (or flaky local ASOS report) and being surprised or holding an inappropriate slip. Also on instrument approaches it is very helpful to avoid suddenly getting slow on a coupled approach.
  10. On the topic of ATC and April fools Day, I did not fly today and thus never got to respond to "say altitude" with "altitude".
  11. The original "do I fit?" Question was recently definitively answered in this thread:
  12. I have to admit that someday it might be nice to fly and enjoy a cigar in the Mooney. I think I would really feel as if I have "arrived" at that point. Probably asking for it right now, though, esp. flying usually with oxygen.
  13. Circling back to post a link to a specific model that worked well for me in the Acclaim (where the socket is pretty close to the co-pilot yoke in the in-out axis): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BLYX8SHZ Note that the power rating is higher than the converter (24->12V) circuit so YMMV but I only plug in maybe an iPad mini that's already charged.
  14. LOL. Chance favors the prepared mind? That's probably a bit too highbrow for this situation, though.
  15. Used to have a full-size one in my multi-clip lapdesk (think Rod Machado's early IFR book). I still have a small metal one tucked in my kneeboard to this day. When it comes time to really need it, you all will probably read about what happened in one venue or another. Hopefully firsthand in Mooneyspace.
  16. They make some nice tiny lower profile ones also these days that minimize potential snagging and interference with the co pilot yoke. Come to think of it, that's one of my nominations for a nice inexpensive addition! That left rear one is great for a Sentry or a bigger cabled adapter. Pro tip: replace the fuses in the bigger car units with one matched to the 's 12V converter's rating.
  17. 40kts is probably closer to Vne, right? So you could land perpendicular... I keed, I keed! Love the 152. Seriously, though, with that set up did you slant your course across the runway? To @Brandt's point, I would worry a bit about full flaps on a longbody esp at fwd CG loadings due to tail authority. I've felt the tailplane bobble before and it's weird. OTOH most of my crossing landings to date, even with a lot of rudder, have been full flap... So just thinking of extreme cases with gusts in particular. PP thoughts only, not even as good at cross wind landings as I seem to remember being...
  18. This is a good thread with good advice. The comments about being politely proactive and the example of "say intentions" ring true. While there is value in using std terminology, being concise, and so on, the point is communication, so if you have a good way to accomplish something that might be a bit unusual or even clumsy on the fly, it's probably better than being proper and quiet and unintentionally ending up being mysterious and confused all at once. I try to ask for stuff when needed ahead of time to avoid just saying "unable"later. Eg descents. Esp. if I am flying a break in profile or something that they would have no idea about. Also sometimes ask when there's a warning about vectors, "hey can i help by going faster or slower"? You know, being a Mooney and all...
  19. This is wonderful. Funniest thing in a while. BTW did the Comanche actually use a Mooney airfoil? Everything in that was surely factual.
  20. There was a comment above about getting 1000 hrs out of a cylinder. What do you guys find a reasonable service life? I replaced two originals recently in the mid 1500's (after lapping and ring flush about 40-50 hrs ago) and one of the 1000-hr cylinders just a few weeks ago.
  21. Is there air leakage past rings on any cylinders? I had good luck with the Savvy ring flush procedure. As for compressions being marginal, could be valves or rings. Potentially there are inexpensive mitigations if no major damage has occurred. Some shops are very comfortable lapping valves in place and trying the ring flush, and some look at you like you grew a second head.
  22. I love the idea. I flew a longer trip yesterday and about 30 min from home managed to bounce my head off the ceiling. I think the ceiling will be ok. I'm guessing the long bodies really don't need these? I've never really felt any yaw under damping noe Dutch roll instability. The plane is just very stable. D
  23. Hi All, I'm on the BAS Parts Sales mailing list and just saw they listed an M20K in their parts hangar. They'll note new planes every few weeks. Just an FYI for anyone looking for stuff. I have no financial interest in BAS, just a happy customer due to their good communication and value with prior transactions. HTH
