  1. The 175 has the calculator as well, it would just be easier to not have to input anything. I'm told I can have the 175 do the calculations with the sensor data and that it will get the OAT from the 930 but, I have to go through a couple of screens to see it. Normally not that big a deal unless it's a little bumpy and then the touch screen leaves a bit to be desired.
  2. Thanks for the input. I was hoping I could use the 930's OAT but, it doesn't look like that will be possible. Bummer but, at least it's only about another $500 for the GAD13 and probe which, in aviation terms anyway, is pretty cheap. I have an Icarus SAM GPSS for the GPS and STec already and I don't have the G5 HSI, only the AI. The SAM isn't the best but, it does the job well enough.
  3. I have a single G5 as an AI in my C without a GAD, GMU or OAT sensor so I only get Track, IAS and GS on it. I would like to get TAS, Winds and MH as well and know it needs the GMU 11 for MH and will need OAT from somewhere to make the calculations. First question is will the single G5 AI display all this if I've given it OAT and MH? Assuming that it will show it without the G5 HSI, will an EDM 930 provide that? I'm replacing my legacy engine gauges with a 930 at annual and plan to interface it with the GPS 175 and the G5, I know it will provide fuel flow and endurance to the GPS but, I'm not clear what else it shares.
  4. I got this off Amazon and used it yesterday, image quality is really good and I'm very happy with it for the price. The A&Ps liked it also. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B28HRSBP
  5. Dugosh is good people and they're thorough, if there are issues with the plane, they'll likely find them. Sent from my Pixel 6a using Tapatalk
  6. I actually just submitted my wings Basic Credit flight activity. I forgot about that giving an insurance reduction. Sent from my Pixel 6a using Tapatalk
  7. I'd love to have just liability. When I bought the plane, nobody would offer it for a student in a retract, period. If I can get just cheap liability now, I'll do that for sure. I'm still shopping and Parker is working on quoting it right now. Sent from my Pixel 6a using Tapatalk
  8. I'm not getting the rating just for insurance savings, I'm doing it because my dad made me promise I would as soon as I finished my Private. He says it'll save my life one day and with 22,000 hours under his belt, I have no reason not to believe him. I've also had several trips that I wouldn't have been able to make without bringing a CFII along so we could file, and a few that I haven't been able to make because I didn't have anyone available to go with me, so I'm very motivated by that. To be honest, I prefer flying on an instrument plan over VFR, it's easier in a lot of ways. And, it's usually a pretty smooth ride, plus there's something really satisfying about popping up through the clouds to see clear blue skies and who doesn't like popping out the bottom at 300' AGL on speed, glide and center line? It's pretty cool when the runway just appears before you and you're perfectly configured to land. Sent from my Pixel 6a using Tapatalk
  9. I will but thought feedback from others would be useful data to have as well. Sent from my Pixel 6a using Tapatalk
  10. Good feedback, thanks. If it's a 50% savings, it's definitely worth waiting. I've done a lot of flying since I bought it, I expect to be well over 200 hours in it in my first year of ownership. I've only had it since August and I'm 3/4 of the way there. Sent from my Pixel 6a using Tapatalk
  11. Those of you with an instrument rating, how much did it lower your insurance? I have 150 hours in my Mooney and just got my Private so I'm finally able to get insurance. I got a quote from Avemco today for $3600, which really doesn't seem horrible for the first year. However, I'm working on my instrument right now and expect to have it done in 6 - 8 weeks so I'm wondering if there's enough of a savings to make it worthwhile to just wait until I finish that to get insurance. I've been without for 9 months now so another 1-2 months without doesn't really bother me. Honestly, I really just want the liability coverage. Anyway, I appreciate any input. 12. So I thought I'd come back to this now that I've passed my Private check ride in my 1963 C. Just to recap, I had 20 hours in my log book when I bought the C in August. 10 months, 4 CFIs, 3 weather delays and 176 hours later, I passed in a check ride that took 2.5 hours from start to finish, including the oral. A lot of my hours (probably 50) were real XC trips from Kerrville to Atlanta, a few to Dallas, several to CC, etc. for things I needed to go do or lunch with my dad, some of it solo, some of it with the CFI and I've flown 57 hours since my first check ride date was cancelled, so I was really ready with 50 - 60 hours of training in the Mooney (plus the previous 20 in the 172 and Cherokee). Getting a private in a Mooney is totally doable. Yes, I had a few hard landings early on, including some bounces but, once I learned to manage the energy, that stopped. The hardest part was learning how to slow the plane down and realizing that although it flies fast, it lands just as slow as a trainer. After figuring that out, there really isn't that much more to manage and the muscle memory comes quickly. So, if you're considering buying a Mooney before you have your private and finishing your training in it, I say go for it. I'm super glad I did.
  13. Probably BRO just because there aren't any car options at PIL. Sent from my Pixel 6a using Tapatalk
  14. Google found this pretty quickly... https://slingaircraft.com/aircraft/sling-tsi/
  15. I know a guy with a Lear45, his annual operating costs are around $800k, it's really expensive to get over weather and have real icing capability. Turbines aren't cheap to operate. Sent from my Pixel 6a using Tapatalk
  16. At the time it started, I had COM2 tuned to the ERV AWOS, 118.125. Sent from my Pixel 6a using Tapatalk
  17. I fly through this area often and typically have no issues. In fact, that morning I had gone from ERV to RBD at 5500 and it all worked fine. On the way back, when I had the problems, I was at 8500. We have an RCO for .95 on the field at ERV that we use to get IFR clearances on the ground. Sent from my Pixel 6a using Tapatalk
  18. No, they're both in a line right in front of the windshield in the middle of the avionics cowling so the cable isn't long and they have the same line of sight view. Com1 is an Icom IC-A200 and Com2 is a Narco MK-12D+.
  19. Yesterday I went to see my dad for lunch and got FF because I always do and I was going into a Bravo. On the way home, everything was great until I switched to Houston Center and then they couldn't hear me on Com 1. I switched to Com 2 and they heard me fine then handed me to their other frequency as I was getting close to home. Thinking maybe it was just the first frequency, I tried Com 1 again and again they couldn't hear me so I used Com 2 the rest of the trip. After landing, I went back to Com 1 and asked for a radio check, which was immediately answered as 5x5 so I don't *think* it's me but, I don't know. Anyone have any idea what could cause this? It was 134.2 and 134.95 with Houston that had the issues. Sent from my Pixel 6a using Tapatalk
  20. I'm based at ERV and this was in the monthly airport newsletter - Mooney International Corporation Update Mr. Jonny Pollack, CEO of Mooney International Corporation, presented an update on the company’s current operations and strategic objectives to the Joint Airport Board on April 26, 2023. Mr. Pollack reported the company is currently focusing on aviation parts as a “stepping stone” to a return to full sized aircraft manufacturing. “In the short term,” Mr. Pollack explained, “we plan to become a self-sustaining aviation parts company. In the long term, we’re manufacturing airplanes again, but with a more solid foundation that can weather economic uncertainties.“ Since Mooney International has a sizeable footprint on the airfield, and an economic impact on Kerrville-Kerr County development, meeting attendees asked if there was potential to lease portions of the facility to third parties. Mr. Pollack stated the property’s value was in the company’s manufacturing certificate. The company recently passed the FAA Part 145 Service Center audit and has plans to secure contracts for manufacturing specialized defense avionics and related components. Mr. Ed Marin, Chief Operational Office, pointed out that potential growth of the company is tied to sustainable and long-term development within the aviation industry, including the potential for defense contracts.
  21. Uvalde UVA, Fredericksburg T82 and Stinson SSF have restaurants on the field. Stinson is a historic airport with a museum. Llano AQO and Lockhart both have really good BBQ nearby, Lockhart has a crew car to get to Black's, Coopers in Llano will come pick you up at the airport if you call them. 22. This is a bucket list trip for me. My C doesn't have the legs for it, when I move into a 252 or a Bravo though, I'm going to get serious about planning it. I hope your trip goes off smoothly, please share your progress in planning and pics/stories of the crossing.
  23. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a grounding issue. Based on some other stuff I've seen done in the avionics, I'm pretty certain things were grounded to the aircraft body instead of running everything back to a central grounding bus. It's something I'll be looking into when we're working on everything else, there's going to be a lot of changes made to the wiring anyway replacing all the gauges so I might as well straighten it all out at the same time.
  24. Another question, what's the best option to replace the beacon strobe on the bottom of my C? The one I have currently is clear/white.
  25. I have the original style strobe on my C and when it flashes, I hear a sound in my headset and see a pretty big bounce in my ammeter, oil temp and oil pressure gauges in the original, analog instruments. I'm replacing those with a JPI EDM-930 when I do my annual, which I hope will make the bounce less noticeable but, I'd really like to get rid of the sound in the headset/comms as well if I can. Would replacing the strobe with an LED accomplish that?
