  1. Indeed what surprised me is that used early Bravos are selling for same as 252 Mooneys! So decided older Bravo, Rocket or Ovation may be just the right ticket for me.
  2. Agree since tons of Cessna and Bonanza drivers mod the hell out of their planes with STCs out the wazoo. Only issue that I've heard with the Rocket versus Bravo is the low prop clearance of 6 inches in the Rocket versus 12 inches prop clearance in the Bravo which can make taxiing and landing a bit more challenging.
  3. Thanks Rocketman, indeed you are lucky to own both hot rods. I'm looking to do a long trip over mountains this summer so either will get me there and back. Rockets are selling 110-150k range from what I'm seeing and Bravos 150-250k so the Rocket less popular. Does Rocket engineering still provide decent support and parts?
  4. I'm looking at older Mooney Bravo since they are a great buy right now. Just wanted to get a ball park figure from Bravo owners on how much to budget for operating costs including maintenance, fuel and MX in comparison to 252 and Rocket. Thanks, Scott
  5. +1 Bob yeah more to worry about on cost to maintain and engine management which is why a good engine monitor is mandatory. I've decided to look for a 252 or Bravo based on the prices seen for well maintained 201 J Mooneys. Goal is my last airplane first. Buying an entry plane and selling later is a pain. -Scott
  6. Hi Brad, Good to hear. The owner is willing to cut me a serious deal on the 201 so I will have LASAR perform an extra rigorous prebuy on it especially on the turbo status. Scott
  7. Or by math: Acclaim > Rocket > Bravo > Ovation > 252 > 231 > 201 > M20F - Scott
  8. Or sell me your J and buy the Ovation you want!
  9. Interesting. I'd prefer a 231 over the 201 for the turbo power over mountains as long as it has the waste gate and intercooler.
  10. Right based on my limited knowledge of the Rocket, I thought average fuel burn was like 18-22 gph.
  11. How did you tweak the engine to get such a low fuel burn in the Rocket? I love that model except for the poor fuel mileage unless there is a way to manage the fuel burn.
  12. Indeed like what I'm looking for. How does the Garmin 480 GPS compare to the Garmin 430?
  13. ROTFLMAO funny today an older pilot told me that in rank of most to least expensive: Horses > Wife/girlfriend/kids > plane > boat > car > bicycle > walking
  14. Thanks for the tips. I'm fine with steam gauges, a Garmin 430 or 530 and decent autopilot. Funny today I flew to Shelter Cove and few Mooneys there and I flew the club Piper. I can use Foreflight with a panel mount GPS for backup. Ideal to have long range tanks and nice clean Mooney.
  15. I don't mind learning to perform owner assisted maintenance on the plane. Anyways, I'll keep looking. Happy Easter. Scott
  16. Hi Tom, Sounds great. Will call you this weekend about your J for sale. If you have pics my email is master85@hotmail.com Thanks Scott
  17. Hi Dave, Yes, I've flown a friends Rocket and love the performance but I'm concerned about fuel burn and parts support from Rocket engineering. But for the right deal, I'd consider it. Scott
  18. Looking at Mooney 201 or 231. Ideally turbo charged for flying out west.
  19. Thanks guys the 201J has almost 5000 hours TT and close to 900 SMOH and about 300 SPOH. It also has a M20 turbo charger which is nice for flying out west. Paint and interior need updating and while it is IFR the avionics are very old. So I would need to add a Garmin 530W or 750W to it. Scott
  20. Hi fellow pilots, Prospective Mooney owner here and I have flown Mooney 201J and Mooney 252 with friends. I am a fairly low time pilot with private rating and 250 total hours looking at a Mooney 201J. I see one for sale as part of a estate sale for 59K OBO that has had at least 2 gear up damage that occurred 3 years ago. Repairs were done by Top Gun in Stockton, CA including engine tear down. Also had a prop strike. Should I pass on this plane or would you consider it if they negotiated on price. Thanks, Scott
