  1. Well good luck to you.... This had the potential to be a good plane and needed some work but dealing with the dealer proved more that I could bear...after investing hours if not days of time into this plane here is what I can tell you. This plane sat outside for a great number of years in Louisiana and needs some attention wrt to paint to curb the corrosion. Also based on the agent I had go look at it in TX the windows are shot. Hawk painting in FL quoted me $9500, Mena was $10k and Tejas up around $17k. The interior you can do yourself but plan for $4500. The windows you can also do yourself to the tune of about a grand for the side windows. They are pretty crazed over. Being a low time pilot make sure you understand how to use the Turbo, last thing you want is to blow a jug off the side. Put $10k aside to have the tanks sealed in the next 3-5 years as Dari was only having the 45 year old sealant patched. Gear pucks are about due so set aside $1200 for those. Depending on how long you are going to keep it look at ADS-b regulations, compliance and costs. Before you pay him I beg you to have a mechanic inspect the plane for fuselage tube/main wing spar/tail corrosion! This is why I didn't buy it, he wouldn't let me have a qualified mechanic inspect it. Having lost a Mooney to it at only .006" it's nothing to fool with. It already has surface corrosion according to Dari(mind you he has never seen the plane). He touted how much money the doc had recently spent on the plane, so it gave me great pause, why would someone who just put $20k in an engine and an $8k prop sell it to a dealer for $20k when he could have easily just taken it to eBay and got $25?? Something didn't add up for me to take the gamble with my money. I wish you all the best, but just FYI that in annual only means it's airworthy until the next time a mechanic looks at it, and that next time is now on your dime...
  2. Well looks like someone agreed to spend $25.2k on an outside Mooney with no inspection....good luck!
  3. Having owned N78950 S/N 1984 its a 1961.... but it looks beautiful, Congrats to the new owner!!
  4. David, that looks AWESOME!
  5. A gps.
  6. Awesome! Lucky duck there finding a good one!
  7. Well there's your problem....I thought that was the point of a trophy wife
  8. This is why I love aviation! $30K + $50K = $60K
  9. Alan you are right but this is not my first airplane. I'm not expecting the thing to look like it did when it rolled off the line. If it's airworthiness issues and less than $500 I'm not going to let that stand in the way of a good deal. If it's $5000 to fix I'd like to know that going into it. Having bought a Mooney and not having it inspected by a MSC I learned this lesson the hard way. Out of limits old style gear pucks that made it through the pre buy but were over .5" out of spec 3 months later and the corrosion which ultimately scraped the bird 15 months after purchase didn't just appear out of nowhere. The real key is my only requirement was to have there plane inspected by Don before money was exchanged.
  10. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that ship has sailed.... not that I wouldn't love to own this plane at the price point I had agreed to pay TWICE (providing it passed Don's inspection), but because... well I need not continue to relive the past. Listen I'm a reasonable guy with cash looking to buy an airplane sooner rather than later. As it was pointed out, if I was offering to pay for the ferry pilot, and a PPI/Annual at Maxwell's, I can't make myself anymore of a buyer than that. I understand that people get a little funky when money and Mooneys are in the picture, but I was offering him an easy $1000 for owning a plane for a week. How many of you would love to turn around and sell the your plane for more than you paid for it? If he made me an offer I couldn't refuse and allowed me to have Don inspect it(non-negotiable), and put it in writing; sure I'd consider it, but as Alan has said I'm a bit optimistic sometimes:)
  11. N78950 SN 1984 it was a C..... AW date in 1961... model year 1962...
  12. Hey buddy! Look at top gun for a pre buy on that one.
  13. No it was a '61 C, that I sold to Lucky and the gang down at ASOD back in November of 2005.
  14. The plan was to pay Don's flat $995 prepurchase with the option to turn it into an annual if nothing was uncovered. I offered to pay for the ferry pilot not just fuel for the 200 mile flight. I had budgeted $20k for paint interior and glass, but my big concern was corrosion, and wanted a MSC to get eyes on it to make sure the skeleton was ok before I put the dress on her. I was going to be paying $22k as is +ferry/inspection cost. My search continues, and having owned and scraped a Mooney to corrosion, I agree with what most of you are saying.
  15. He "thinks" its a solid plane though he has never seen it in person, and he is unaware of discrepancies becuase he purchased the plane as-is where-is. I offered to pay for a ferry pilot of Dari's choosing to ferry the plane to Don Maxwell's shop, arguably one of the best and fairest Mooney shops around. He told me this plane would not go to a MSC because they will "tear (him) a new ***hole." and "Anyone who wants to take a 66'Mooney to a MSC is a moron." A few people on this forum would disagree.
  16. Alan, I'd say we are finally in agreement on something. No hard feelings. Still in the market if you want to talk. Chris, you are correct it was a patch not seal in 2012. I've been looking at that one a lot. Dan, I thought the same thing. Problem is I could not verify if it was in AW condition, and the price seemed a little too good to be true.
  17. I wasn't concerned about the bottom end, it was the sitting outside for years in Louisiana and being told I could not have a Mooney qualified mechanic inspect it....he literally said I can have any shop that is NOT a MSC do an annual.
  18. On the surface it looks like a nice project plane (slap and interior and paint on her and enjoy)... who knows what's underneath and the broker won't let you look. So this plane was just listed for sale by a reputable broker in Lousiana for $2x,xxx. I had put an offer in the day after the new broker offered to buy the aircraft. I was going to buy it from him, up until 2 days ago for a very fair price. The aircraft is listed as "recent seal" (It was a patch, done at Don's shop in 2012), it has a weep in the right tank. Glass is crazed over, and the plane sat outside. Interior has some rips and is a 1 according to the last broker, paint has rust showing through. (no mention of SB-208A/B compliance even though I asked) Don said he annualed the plane in 2004 and it showed abnormal cylinder wear, and there was no mention that any had been replaced since 2004. The real reason I didn't buy this plane was I wanted to take the plane to Don Maxwell's for a prebuy/annual. The new broker current seller said "anyone who takes a '66 Mooney to a service center is a moron."
  19. There are 3 on ebay right now. $325-$525 USD
  20. I am in the market however.... point me to the nearest E that has flown reasonably speaking (90 hours in 14 years isn't nearly enough) with complete logs, and a seller who is realistic about what planes are worth today and not 10 years ago and I'm there!
  21. Actually you never said that... and that was a pretty stupid statement to make. I'm not jealous person, and I really don't care that I'm not buying your plane...

    Old Mooney

Put this plane in the junkyard for main wing spar corrosion in 2005... had about 400 hours and touched 3 corners of the country in 15 months.
