Thanks, just wondering as LASR have a good Rep and they are close to my location so if/when I get a plane I didn't know if they are reasonable to do business with or are over priced due to the Bay Area clientele?
-
May I ask what an Annual from LASR cost?
-
The creator said he can add. GPS, AHARS, Pressure Sensor and everything that Stratus2 has for an additional $50 in parts... I ordered another Pi.. What the heck. Do you have ForeFlight? Wondered if b/c you stated you used Flightplan GO instead and I don't know if Flightplan Go has traffic or?
-
Is there anyway to.. (after reading the Reddit page and these comments) add: GPS Pressure Sensor AHARS? IMU Then it will be a complete package

I noticed the weather too. I think this is great!! Obstacle to build one of these is very little so what the hell, lets all build one and try it.

Read the link, it's basically all there but I don't know where you get the code for the micro sd card nor how the battery pack is powering the a/c

I built a Raspberry Pi ADS-B Receiver and feed Flightaware It's not that hard, coming from someone who does not write code, it works but it's really all down to your antenna which no one has commented on. Height, being in a plane will make this less critical but your still going to need an antenna of some sort and that's not a bad thing as what works the best only cost a few dollars to build. You can buy the raspberry pi with the dongle for less than $50.00 but your going to need software such as the Flightaware, planefinder or others. Non affiliated software???? Possible but as I mentioned I'm not a programmer. What your going to need in a plane however that I can see are: Power inverted to convert the 12/28 V plane power to the 120V Pi requirement Blue tooth adapter of some sort as the pi has no communication other than a HDMI port your going to have to configure some sort of communication port between the pi and a display screen and the screen does not have to be an Apple product, possible a tablet that runs Microsoft. I have a USB wireless adapter that connects to a wireless router. That's not going to work in the plane but a Bluetooth adapter has to be available The pi comes with a standard 4 port USB in it and you can add more really easy. Your not going to get every plane out there. Not even close as mine is located directly across from an airport, small private not a commercial one, and I never get any hits on the planes unless they have ADS-B Out! Southwest airlines doesn't broadcast on ADS-B for the most part. Some of their new planes do but they still have a lot of older planes just to give you an example. The Pi is lightweight, the power cables weigh more than it does which is good. There are a lot of ways to modify the dump 1090 to show colors, distance rings and such but those are based on a 192.168.**** I don't know how that will work in the air.

I was doing my first X Country to KSAC on the morning the fire started and I could see the plume of smoke rising.. It's big!!

Near Death Experience (Mid-Air) This Morning

Would have like to had had your stuff Sat. Night. I left Chino to Vegas on my X Country Night flight.. Under the HOOD on the way to Vegas.(I hate hood work) We had contact with So Cal Center and we were cruising at 8,500' towards the HEC VOR. It was DARK and then on the not so distant horizon there's a light pointed at our nose. It just stay'd there and my CFI called SoCal and asked if we had traffic off our nose? SoCal said negative.. Finally I took the hood off and looked right at it.. It had to be a house in the middle of the no where with lights lit up for a party or something. We had 1,500' clearance on our plan but that place must have been less. The old Warrior doesn't have any nav other than the radio's so it is hard to decipher what's what in the dark.. Another reason for ADS-B! And an IPAD!!! -
Can you please define "Landing long" The airport I'm based out of has a 3,300' runway..
-
I'm in a similar situation. I've got 33 hrs and just need my 3 hrs of night and I am done and have been looking at what's there and what's really best. If... (I use two flight schools in two different locations and see a lot of guy's/girls that are afraid of landings while in the lobbies) your good at landings I don't think from the research I've been doing that mastering the Mooney's speeds will be hard for anyone. On the other hand, if you have trouble with airspeed in the pattern it could be a problem. One of the flight schools I use has a M20C they rent, but the owner said people need to have a minimum of 20 hrs post ticket to rent it and a 2-3hr checkout with emphasis on GUMPS and not forgetting the put the gear down with a lot of distractions thrown at you. Value... There are expensive Mooney's and there are some down right CHEAP Mooney's and there are some somewhere in between. I certainly have not figured out what the difference between all the Mooney models are as of yet. The F seem like a good deal. There are certainly lots of owners on here that give them thumbs up all the time so if you have the skills then it could very well be a great first plane.

This makes me think of another question... Being spoiled with the Garmin panel, what is the ADS-B traffic like on Foreflight? Anyone use this for traffic? I just have to finish my ppl requirements by doing the night flight and want to do it at another school that uses a Cherokee 140 (Really only want to do this because I can fly to Vegas from LA and it seems like more fun than flying around SF at night) that's built in the 60's and was wondering if I should get a stratus and go for it?? -

These stories are abound with everyone's flying experience and I often wonder, being a student pilot, just what the fuck some of these people are thinking? Last wee I was at 069, Petaluma, right traffic for 29. I was in the down wind, mid field at pattern altitude. I can hear on the radio a guy call 2 mile 45 extended down wind #1 for 29.... Hmmmm.. Where the hell is this guy? Look and look and I'm getting closer and closer to the #'s... I radio, "Where are you?" He says off to your left, just then he shoots across and just under me (pattern is 1,100') and faster than me so he assured himself of getting ahead. He was GREEN! and the tree's hid him almost as much as when he turned base and final over the golf course! From the looks of things, he called #1 on the back side of the hill on the Somoma side and was no where near to the pattern just wanted to burn right in ahead of everyone by diving under pattern altitude (About 900') and going faster to get himself ahead. The only scary part was that he was not on the traffic screen as he as an RV4/8? So most likely doesn't have ADS-B so he was invisible both to the screen and to the eye with the color choice of the plane. -

BINGO.. It's the least expensive plane to take lessons in at this school When in LA, I take lessons at Chino in a Cherokee that's 180 different to this plane.. -

It's got an auto pilot as well! This makes going places really ... To Easy... Today I'm off to HAF, KMRY, then over to C83, KVCB, fuel in KCCR and then back to KDVO and all I have to do is push a few buttons and it gives me the course line. I've plotted this course out prior as I need my last 2.5hr of solo X Country but the G3 makes performing this so easy. Traffic screen as well as traffic on the chart & WPT Pages. Use flight following just in case though... -

I did my first half of my Solo X Country today, have Garmin G3X with ADS-B, was using Flight Following and was landing into a Class D airport and in contact with the tower as I was on final. I got a call from the Tower at KSTS, You've got traffic off your nose at 10 o'clock, no radio contact with him" the tower stated... I could not see him... Then the tower said "he's off your 9 o'clock" I looked over and he was 200' off my left, almost same altitude as me, not on my traffic screen and he was not talking to the tower.. He was a butterscotch color'd 152-172? and being that we are in the Brown season here in CA he blended into the surrounding background. Moral, nothing can be 100% but good thing the tower had him on radar! Screen shot of the Garmin G3X -
I am doing my PPL training in an RV12 in NorCal and a Cherokee 140 in SoCal. The RV is an SLSA factory built plane and it's been great so far. Landed at C83 yesterday with 20 knot head winds and back at KDVO with a 14 knot cross, it's responsive, and easy to fly with the Glass cockpit, all and all its good. The Cherokee is like flying a TRUCK.. Not responsive, but easy. It's just lethargic in comparison to the RV and they say all the RV's have similar characteristics. Don't know how a Mooney flies yet, the school in LA has a 1961 "B" and they say it's not a lot much different than the Cherokee other than the #'s when landing as it will not slow down. So with a plane that is NEW, EASY to fly and CHEAP in comparison it's a win win for the customers and for Vans. Easy to see why they are successful. Now if RUTAN would do this the world would be even better!!
-
Well, it certainly would cost more than the plane is worth to do all those things to one. If aircraft were like an expensive Mercedes or BMW (notice I didn't say Jaguar) where some fool pays a LOT of money for them new and then 5 yrs later some sucker purchases the car for 1/3rd of sticker price it would be a different world but these planes are worth the same with a timed out engine, ratty tatty interior and faded paint as they are with all items being new. Makes no sense. Jaguar would be 0.10 on the dollar!!! Look at the classifieds. A J with 4K hours and and ET of 1,300 is the same price as a 1,900 hr plane with a 250 hour engine. Go figure. Now does it make sense to purchase a new plane? Does it make sense to purchase a plane at all? Some, correctly or incorrectly, believe that something that's 20, maybe 30 yrs old is to old to want to own? ( I just solo'd in a 1966 Cherokee which is older than I am and the day before that I solo'd in a new RV12 Glass panel and all) There is some validity to this as with any car there are corrosion concerns that come with age, there are electrical issues that can come with age, the RV12 I fly had a G3 panel go out the morning of my solo (so nothing is 100% guarantee),, there are sometimes safety concerns that are mentally eliminated with a new aircraft purchase (Cirrius) and I am sure there are 100's maybe 1,000's of more reasons people desire one over the other... I cannot see paying 500K for a plastic kite nor aluminum one for that matter....

I saw that on ebay as well. One just sold for $855.. Totally insane! The buyers are obviously not aware of the new 2s model that came out.

Maybe this is out in left field but never hurts to ask. My iPad does not have a modem and therefore does not have an internal GPS. However, when I am connected to a wireless connection Foreflight shows the little blue dot for my position. Being that one can use their phone as a hot spot, is it possible for the user's phone to be the GPS signal for the Ipad and therefore Foreflight (provided there is cell service for the GPS to work) or am I way off base with this? Sounds to simple to be good
-
ADS-B in, but what about the out? Obviously this does not satisfy the 2020 mandate?
-
For further understanding, does the stratus provide he ADS-B or does the application on the iPad?
-
So you cannot use the same GPS receiver with fore flight as you do with the Garmin Pilot?
-
Afraid to know, but what's the cost for a battery in a Mooney?
