GTN 650 failing at altitude with constant LOI issues
aerohawk replied to rwarederek's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
any other equipment installed or modified recently? Do you ever transmit on 121.5. How far is the gps ant from other ANT? -
2800 first time and 800 or so to renew I think. That covers all makes and models of mooneys I believe. Unless you have the privilege of only working on mooneys your going to be buying more then just one manufacturer.

When mechanics have to spend 10k to 20k a year on ATP maintenance manual subscription service you will see why there cost are so high. It cost 5k just for the Cessna 100 series of manuals. Let's not even get into how much liability insurance cost. Lots of money may change hands but very little ends up as profit for the mechanic. Anyone doing a annual for 1200 is skipping stuff or donating there time for free. I do know of a few older mechanics that do the annuals that cheap but they do everything in accordance with there years of experience and not the maintenance manual. Lots of holes in safety when torque settings are set by "good enough" instead of by the book

Engine hoist only cost a couple hundred, seems like cheap insurance to me

Congrats on finding the gremlin. Those kinds of issues can be the worst.

Trip planning - Little Rock to Clovis NM today 5/22
aerohawk replied to IndyTim's topic in General Mooney Talk
As someone who used to live in Clovis,NM let me start by saying I am a Sorry. I currently live in Amarillo and the weather for the entire area is nasty low level clouds with a random thunderhead coming through every now and then. On the flip side the Clovis airport is well taken care of and and good lighting. The FBO building is not that great, but then again neither is the area. Good luck on the trip. -
If it is making good power I would say let it go. The scratches and corrosion by it self won't prevent it from making tbo. But at 32 years old I would overhaul at tbo since there is moe then likely corrosion on the crankshaft.

I go I got a job working on border patrol aircraft at goodfellow afb.
-
I plan on moving to San Angelo,tx shortly. I would be hot to cut you a deal on doing owner assisted annuals every year, if that's helps temp you more.
-
I would be interested in the truck, but I would need some cash to make up the difference.
-

The one fuel cap I i have no longer locks down and the adjustment seems to be maxed out.
-
I need a couple new gas caps for my money anyone have any recomendations for good locking cap replacements. I would prefer something that is just drop and play. If all else fails does anyone know if the Cessna fuel cap p/n 99321 would work?
-
I second that feeling.

If the weight and balance records are up to date and the last annual is signed off then the aircraft is airworthy. When a annual is signed off it means the aircraft and records were inspected and found to be airworthy, plain and simple.

Non-Commercial Standard Category Aircraft - Would you?
aerohawk replied to NotarPilot's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I would be all for this rule change. Nothing would be better then to take a quality airframe like mooney and pack it with the latest avionics gear around for a reasonable price. I am not worried about losing money on the airplane, simply fact my current airplane is worth 60k with mostly original steam gauges. If you had to pay 60k for a airplane which one you buy?Certified original 1969 certified or same 1969 airplane with modern safety and glass cockpit upgrades. I don't see a huge safety hit for people making random engine combinations swaps. One mounting a different engine then were original on there is no simply task. Two it would require 50 hours of phase 1 flight testing just like experimental. The other part of this part 23 rewrite everyone is forgetting is the faa is going to make the process of getting parts tso a lot cheaper and faster. For instance if these experimental avionics get put into aircraft and they prove to dependable the FAA is looking at being able to take all that in flight data and make getting the TSO that much cheaper and easier for the company. I also think it will allow many company's with good ideas to get into the aviation with the millions of dollars in time and research before a product is ready for market. Diesel engine mooneys anyone? Huge savings on aircraft parts. Anyone look at the difference in price for new Lycoming engines. Same exact engine certified is around 30 thousand new experimental cost around 20 thousand new. Only difference between the two is certified comes with a few more sheets of paper. If that alone is not worth it then I don't know what is. -
Non-Commercial Standard Category Aircraft - Would you?
aerohawk replied to NotarPilot's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
No, because as the regulation is written it must be inspected by and IA and in a airworthy condition before it can be placed into this new category. -
part 23 appendix G / non commercial vs ceritified
aerohawk replied to sleepingsquirrel's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
It will be nice to take a good 40 year old airframe like the mooney and upgrade it with the latest and great gear. If this ends up becoming rule in its current form, I think it will be the game changer that GA fleet needs to survive. No longer will the phone in you pocket be more advanced they your entire airplane. WooHoooooo:) -
changing oil pick-up screen
aerohawk replied to Monticello Flying Club's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Save yourself a lot of headache and get the airwolf remote oil filter system. Best thing I ever did for my 69f mooney, removes the headache and oil changes take 10 mins. -
I wouldn't due that if I were you. Mooney's are nose heavy airplanes, as such by tieing down the tail it put a whole lot of stress on the middle of the airframe that was never designed to take that much stress. The best way is to get a engine hoist from tractor supply (200) and lift the aircraft on the engine. This is the only approved way that I know of.
