Parting 1981 M20J

Recommended Posts

Scott,

I have the mechanism inside the engine compartment so what I need is the "Control, Cowl Flap" and its components shown in page 274, figure #48 and listed on Page 276 "Cowl Flap Control System (Part #34) in the Mooney parts catalog. In short is what you pull and push to open or close the flaps. My 68C came w/o operating cowl flaps and I really would like to be able to open them to solve an overheating issue, albeit not a very serious one, during take off.

Thanks, Jose

PS Just remembered that you are parting a J model and that you probably don't have a C catalog but the J model knob will also do

OK, I'll see if I can get the cockpit assembly out but I'm afraid it will be this weekend before I can do so.  I'll take some pics and see if it will work for you.  I do not have the C catalog and don't recall the differences (if any) with the J since I haven't flown a C in many years.

Thanks for the heads up, do you (or anybody reading this thread) happen to have a parts catalog view of the J cowl flap assembly inside the engine compartment? Isn't the knob assembly for both just a pull-push action? I trust that your comment is based on knowledge of both systems, but I am also curious as to their difference and if there is anyway that the J can be modified in any way to actuate the C mechanism. There is a Mooney C in the field that had the mechanism of a Navion installed but I did not want to go that way. Thanks, Jose

Jose,

I took a brief look at the salvage cowl flap arrangement and unfortunately it is located in the center console, and I'm not sure it would be easy to retrofit into a C.  On my '77, it is a separate knob that attaches below the steel tube that frames the lower portion of the instrument panel.  That one would transfer pretty easily.  I have plans to retrofit the '81 salvage console and engine controls into my '77 at which point I'll have the easy cowl flap control surplus, but unfortunately that isn't going to happen anytime soon I'm afraid due to time constraints.

Hi Scott,

I need both left and right inner gear doors. Do you still have the right one and will it fit a M20K? How much are they going for I might be able to make a new one or a repair an old one if I had an old damaged one for a sample.

thanks,

Swaid

Hi Swaid,

Sorry for the delay... I do have the right door and it is damaged.  I can send you some pics directly if you wish, but I don't think there is any way you'll be able to duplicate it due to the very contoured stretch-formed pieces.  You could probably repair mine with some effort, but you would still need to find the other one.  You might try LASAR, or buy Jim's spare set, or try Mod Works for a set of fiberglass ones although that will be a bit of work to fit them.  I did it a few years ago.

Your plane is listed for sale on barnstormers... are you fixing it up to sell, or is it a keeper?

The fiberglass gear doors are available from LASAR.  Around 500$ for a pair. Beware they took some serious stiffening with carbon fiber on the leading edge. They make them with Vinylester resin which is not very stiff.
