EricShr Posted September 7 Report Posted September 7 Hi, does anybody know the proper size (diameter) of the oil drain hose needed to fit over the stock quick drain nipple of the Ovation? I want to "permanently" safety wire the hose onto the nipple and tie it off in a reasonable access position on the lower engine mount to hit an oil bucket without making a mess. Anybody have a picture of how they did it? Thanks, Eric Quote
StevenL757 Posted September 10 Report Posted September 10 If you have the Saf-Air quick-drain, an 18” length of hose at 1/4” I.D. will do it. Quote
triple8s Posted October 3 Report Posted October 3 I have thought of doing this but the location of the oil quick drain is in close proximity to the cabin heat exchanger and the hose will become very hard and brittle then when it gets used after being in a vibrating engine it would eventually be an oily leaky mess. It would also become a possible ignition source permanently above a 1500 degree muffler. I think I will just slip a hose on my quick drain at oil change time and remove when finished. Maybe I’m weird but that’s me. I’ve seen equipment at work catch fire and burn from bursted/leaking hydraulic lines many times. May never happen with an empty oil drain line I don’t know but I do know for certain if it ain’t there it can’t burn.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2 Quote

Anybody have a picture of how they did it? Thanks, Eric i'm not so sure I'd put it on there permanently. What if something bumps it and pushes up just a little on the quick drain? I wouldn't want my oil draining without me knowing about it. I'm guessing that's why Continental or Lycoming doesn't have something like that. @jlunseth had something else happen with his quick drain once over one of the Great Lakes where he lost all of his oil on his 231. What makes the mess on an oil change isn't putting the hose on the quick drain with a little twist-tie of safety wire, it's getting the oil filter off without oil all over the place. 1 Quote
jlunseth Posted November 1 Report Posted November 1 A small, long piece of plastic that was swimming around in the oil entered the quick drain and prevented it from completely sealing. We lost the oil over about two and a half hours, resulting in an emergency descent and landing north of Toronto. As a result, periodically, and usually during the annual, I have my A&P remove the quick drain completely in order to let the oil drain out the big hole, and have a "kit" for the quick drain installed that returns the seal mechanism to next-to-new. 1 Quote
