GI 275 bearing pointers

I am trying to get my GI 275 HSI to show bearing pointers to the GPS fixes from my GTN and GNS (see my setup below). Typically, I'd like to keep the bearing to an NDB, referenced as a GPS waypoint.

I can get the bearing pointers to point to a VOR from the GNS. But if I select GPS 1 (or GPS 2) as a source for the bearing pointers, no pointer shows up. And the manual is pretty sparse around the topic...

Anyone got this to work and can share how they do it?

Here is my setup:
- 2 x GI 275: primary ADI + HSI (backup)
- GTN 650Xi
- GNS 430W

Thanks!
JB

I'm curious why you want it pointed to an NDB?  Maybe to practice one of the few remaining NDB Approaches?  And what is the process you've tried so far?

I haven't flow with a 430, but assuming it is your source, then I'd put the NDB, or the co-located Wpt that is probably associated with the NDB, into the 430's Flight Plan.  Do not put in the Airport or any other fixes, just the one for the NDB.  If the 430 will not Navigate with the one Wpt, you may have to hit Direct To (you do with the GTN)

Assign one of the Pointers to the 430 (GPS2 ?) and see what happens.  In theory it should just always point at that NDB/Wpt even if you're 1000nm away.  Remember that if you look at the 430's Nav Page, the only thing you care about is the Bearing.  The Track info, etc. will be for the Direct To Track if the 430 also needs more than one Wpt to function.

Exactly ^^^ (Skips post above), the GPS isn’t navigating till you create a flight plan and have an active waypoint. It’s only needs one but without an active waypoint there is nothing to display.
Both the GTN and GNS work the same way.

Three good answers.  The 275 can show several navigation needles concurrently: HSI, Bearing Pointer 1 and Bearing Pointer 2.  If the GTN650 is set up as Nav 1 and the GNS430 is set up as Nav 2 the following will work.  If using the 650 for either direct to navigation or a GPS approach, Bearing Pointer 1 is GPS is selected will point to either the direct to waypoint or the next waypoint.  If being vectored for an approach, the HSI indicator may be pegged awaiting alignment on course while the Bearing Pointer 1 is pointing directly to the waypoint.  Really kinda redundant information with that nice big map shown on your iPad.  I also used the Bearing Pointer to keep track of a nearby airport when doing aerobatics.  No matter how many rolls or loops, the pointer always showed direction to the nearby airport.

Whatever you're doing with Nav 1, if you enter the NDB on Nav 2 Direct, the Bearing Pointer 2 will point to it.  I actually demonstrated to someone how IFR was done in the olden days, flying the bearing pointer to a NDB waypoint, and how to correct for a cross wind to and from.  Ha, back in the day, two airports that were routine stops only had NDB approaches.

Two possibilities I can think of

  1. You haven't told your GPS to go anywhere. There has to be an active waypoint. (I assume you are trying it where there's a signal.)
  2. It wasn't installed to take advantage of the pointers. That's a discussion for your installer.
