I just bought into a 99 Ovation with 1450 hours.  We are overhauling engine now, added an Aspen1000 with Terrain. What next steps would you plan of going forward?  Thanks!

Put in the two panel Aspen MAX with synthetic vision, flush mounted and remove all backup instruments and the vacuum system. I had to keep my old AI for the A/P.

First, I’ll wish you sincerest congratulations.  Second, plan to replace the Aspen with a G500TXi.

Just kidding on the Second. :-)

Seriously, (and this isn’t a full list), during your overhaul, please make sure you’re adding these things to the engine for maximum life and smooth, LOP operation…

  • Iridium fine wire plugs - top and bottom.
  • Gold Seal ignition harness.
  • Rebuilt or overhauled magnetos (IRAN at a minimum) as necessary.
  • Carefully inspect your entire exhaust system, including tailpipes and muffler, and spend whatever you need to (preferably with Acorn in Canada) to have them true-up by re-jigging as needed, or simply inspect and give it a clean bill of health.  I’m in the middle of this step now on my airplane before the new engine shows up in May, and it’s money VERY well-spent.  Acorn is top-shelf.
  • REAL Gasket Corporation’s silicon gaskets for the IO550 (https://realgaskets.com/product/valve-cover-gasket-5-holes/).  $72 for the kit.  I’ve never had so much as a stain of oil with these things in over 1000 hours.
  • Break in the engine as directed.  Do not skimp, modify, or improvise on this step.  Some folks on here can share their horror stories by not adhering to this.
  • Ensure your maintenance routine is top-notch, and that your chosen mechanic and/or IA is VERY well-versed in the Ovation’s maintenance.  I can’t stress this enough.
  • Lastly, enjoy the heck out of your personal airliner.

Let me know if this is old news, or helpful.

As Anthony @carusoam would say….Go “O”!   :-)

Do tell about the engine OH..?

Is that O3 powered already?

If it has the usual 280hp IO550…

Now is the time to consider the 310hp / Acclaim’s TopProp option….

The 310hp allows the T/O distance to go from 1200’ to 800’ under the same conditions…

Climb speeds are awesome…

Cruise speeds can be kept the same for best efficiency, or increased 10kias for a few gallons more….

This option makes the most sense at OH time…

Congrats and…

Go O!

:)

Best regards,

Carlos Gann, Gann Aviation is performing the overhaul.  (Builds great engines). I considered. the upgrade, but not worth the investment when I already have plenty of power to go anywhere I need to.  I think the STC was about $7,500.  We have had supply chain issues with getting the crank case back, 4 months!  hopefully on the way and will be installed in a couple of weeks in time for spring!

Short field magic….

If Short fields aren’t on your needs list…

Or climbing over a nearby ClassB

the 310hp falls to the wants list…

The STC and Prop make the really cool project a bit expensive…
