Does anyone have information on the Experimental version of the mite? (M-18X)

Also if anyone knows of any project Mites for sale, I'm out looking.

I saw one in Kerrville about a year ago taxiing for takeoff...  I inquired with MooneyMax if they had just serviced but was told that they didn't, neither know who owned the plane.   I know very few were made, and had seen them just in pictures before until last year; beautiful airplane, and lots of history too that sprung up from it.

I've seen some Mooney Mites at Porterville airport. One owner I talked to at the airport restaurant, told me that Porterville use to have the most Mooney Mites around.  I'm not sure if that is still the case but some are still around and for sale. I once saw a group of Mooney Mites at Columbia airport, Ca. At that time I had a M20A Mooney and those single place Mooney's looked great. One unfortunate Mooney Mite had a gear up problem and I think I saw it's damage. I also remember seeing a Mite at Lompoc airport near Santa Maria, Ca. Not sure if it's there anymore. I wondered how fast a M Mite was. I asked the Porterville owner and was surprised that they weren't all that fast.

We had four Mites display with the Ambassadors at Porterville, CA. Here is the link to the video. They are so cool.

As well, there was one with a saddle on it [for the CFI for BFRs] when we displayed at Reid Hillview Airport near San Jose.

And as Jim mentioned, the Mite site is fun.  As a matter of fact, I have a Mite in the Mooney Ambassador trailer.  Ed Mandibles from Lompoc

Last week I went to look at 4 mite projects for sale in the sedona area.  One of them was real nice with cool mods.  It had a IFR panel.  The owner is wheel chair bound and basically wants to get rid of them before his health get worse.  He kept telling me to make an offer.  He had 4 beautiful 0 time 65-12 engines.  This mite is clean.  Larger cockpit.  Everything redone,  just need to be put togther.  I'll try to attach pictures I took.   He also had a glassair turbo RG in his hanger I was salivating over and was asking 50K.  He said he had it doing 320 mph at 6000'.  If your serious about a mite I would seriously consider taking a look.  His name was Ray Allen and his Ad was on the mooney mite site.

I'd say 120mph on 65 hp. is pretty good for a plane designed in the 40's, originally it had a Crosely car engine converted for aircraft use but even though it worked it wasn't the best and Mooney recalled those planes and installed Lycoming O-145's that probably gave 55 hp. on a good day. A guy I knew had one with the Lyc. that would walk away from a C150 with one guy in each plane. Efficient I'd say.

In the book “They all Fly Through the Same Air” it was said that all of the planes original fit with the Crosley were retrofitted to the little Lycoming.  Some of them may never have gotten the memo.
