rbridges Posted September 10, 2011 Report Posted September 10, 2011 I know I'm being lazy, but I figured you guys would know off the top of your head. I was putting my plane up, and I noticed one of the screws that holds the top cowl was missing. I believe it's the type that has a spring and pops out when you turn it. It's the one closest to the passenger door under the windshield. Anyway, is it a mooney specific part, or is it something I can order from chief? I don't know if this matters, but my C model has a 201 cowl. thanks for the help. Quote
N601RX Posted September 10, 2011 Report Posted September 10, 2011 My F uses Camlocks, but considering you have a 201 cowling on a C it could be anything depending on what the stc called for. The camlocks come in a couple of finishes and screw head styles and you also have to have to get correct grip length. It's a short flight for you over to Aircraft Spruce at Peachtree city. They are a couple of blocks from the airport, but will pick you up if you call. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/menus/ha/fast.html Quote
carusoam Posted September 10, 2011 Report Posted September 10, 2011 Rbridges, I would say take the one from the other side and get the details from it. Unfortunately, you probably need camloc pliers to remove it. On the M20C (standard) the camlocs are almost all identical, except two. These have a different grip length. The one question I have, how did the first one get away to begin with? Aircraft spruce usually has a good explanation of how to order the correct details, including the materials of construction. Having the 201 cowel may throw an interesting twist in the mix. Best regards, -a- Quote
rbridges Posted September 10, 2011 Author Report Posted September 10, 2011 thanks. I thought about those after I posted. I'll check the other side for comparison. I'm not sure how it came loose. I guess they're pretty much standard so long as I have the dimension? Quote
carusoam Posted September 10, 2011 Report Posted September 10, 2011 A quick search on camloc on the aircraft spruce website may be helpful. These are standard parts, but come in several shapes and sizes. Even the mooney parts catalog doesn't tell exactly what length is used in what hole. Installing these devices requires some special tools, or risk of injury to you or your paint. The tools are available also. Example.... http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/hapages/camloc4002.php Look down the list to get to Phillips head, stainless, etc... The m20c uses a larger diameter head than newer mooneys. You may end up looking up which one you need anyway. Best regards, -a- Quote
rbridges Posted September 11, 2011 Author Report Posted September 11, 2011 I'm wondering if they didn't use standard screws. I watched the previous owner remove them, and he had a screwdriver. I'm going to take the other side out and measure it and check with aircraft spruce. I called my IA and he said he may have some extras. Thanks for all your help. Quote
carusoam Posted September 11, 2011 Report Posted September 11, 2011 On the M20C, there are 4 machine screws, up front near the prop, that maintain the alignment between the top and bottom cowl sections. All four are identical. Check to make sure it's not the just screw that is missing. The threaded receptacle piece is held in place by rivets. (old memory).... Best regards, -a- Quote
N601RX Posted September 11, 2011 Report Posted September 11, 2011 If you have to get them from Spruce I would suggest going around your plane and taking an inventory of the different stainless screws and washers used and get 5 or 10 of each. They are only a few cent each and will save a lot of headache in the future. Quote
