Service center thinks my starter adapter is going bad. 1999 Mooney Eagle w/ IO 550. Has anyone had this repaired. They recommnend sending it out for rebuild ( $850.00 - $1400.00) and labor to remove and reinstall (4 hours). Does this sound about right? Don? anyone?

Starter engages but can not pull engine through compression stroke. It just seems too weak. After 2 or 3 turns of the key it pulls through the "tough spot" and starts right up. When hot it will not pull though at all, takes 10 or 15 tries.

I had a guy hand prop me in an IO-520 in a Bonanza I was flying once.  You should have seen that, and no, I wouldn't attempt it ever.

Yep, MSC listened to it for 2 seconds and said thats what it was. Sent out for rebuild, should be back in the air in a few days. Thanks for all the info. This is a great site.
