Where are my Messages?

I might be doing something wrong but I can't seem to find where I can see messages I sent or received from other members.

Are those supposed to be kept forever?  How would I know if the message was sent to other member?

I notice that when I use the browser at work, those icons don't show up.  I think they are created by javascript, and the security settings they use for works partly blocks them.  They can still be clicked on, though.
