Does anyone have any input about the shock absorber on the nose landing gear of a vintage Mooney. Mine (a 1968 F) still has the shock on it. I was told a few days ago that Mooney recommended removing it due to the possibility of it breaking and jamming the landing gear.

My C doesn't have one [1970], and my neighbor's 75 F doesn't either. I've read that Mooney recommended the removal, but don't recall why. Seems there was a discussion about it late last year on the Mooney Tech Board.

No one volunteered the drawing so I e-mailed Stacey and he replied in less than 3 minutes with the drawing.  Hows that for service?

I've attached it here for anyone who needs it.  You also get to reclaim a little over 2 lbs on your W&B

Thanks, Mike.  I'll have to review my records, but I'm pretty sure that my '78 J was originally equipped with one of these, but there is no reference in my W&B to it have been removed.  If I can document as much I might be able to reclaim those 2 pounds of useful load with a W&B update.

Many thanks,

Jim

Another often overlooked W&B item is the Bendix to Slick change out.  It often happens at engine overhaul and is simply not thought about. That and the shock will give you about 5 lbs.
