I will be replacing the oil temp gauge on my 1984 M20J and have a mechanic sign off on it.

I was hoping someone could let me know a few specifics.

Does the hole cluster/strip of instruments have to be removed or can just the oil temp gauge be removed by itself? Are there any tricks to it?

Any other suggestions in removing the glare shield and oil temp gauge.

Thank you.

The cluster gauge assembly will remove with 4 screws/nuts (one per corner) and disconnect from the plane with a single cannon-style plug.  The glareshield probably has a couple screws going through the top that will need a close-quarters screwdriver to remove.  After that, it is fairly simple to wrestle it out, but there will be another connection for the glareshield lights.  My '77 has a pair of knife connectors that are easily disconnected, and I'm not sure if the newer planes have the same setup.

You might be able to remove the oil temp gauge from the cluster, but I've never done it.  Not sure what your problem is, but I'd double-check the ground wire first before removing it.  It likely is connected to one of the mounting screws behind the panel.
