helitim Posted June 7, 2015 Author Report Posted June 7, 2015 Never saw if OP was IFR certified pretty sure if he were the original post would have indicated the option. I am IFR but not current. Understand the system fairly well just have some rust in the memory banks. No question I will use Flight following and stay high over the other traffic until let down. Joe's suggested route seems most logical and user friendly. Thank you all, Tim
JohnB Posted June 7, 2015 Report Posted June 7, 2015 Since I'm based in Long Beach, I fly in and out of LAX Bravo airspace all of the time and it's no problem at all. I pretty much always do IFR so it's not an issue. However, if you're vfr, still no problem. If you are flying at 11,000 ft or above, you don't need to get any clearance, but talking to flight following would always be a good idea. If you are flying below 5k feet, I would suggest requesting the mini route which you should request in advance from flight following before you get there and they will relay that request for you. It's from SMO to VPLSR on the SMO 128 radial. You'll be talking to ATC, and they'll get you through, I've never had them not clear you for this one, (I think once they asked me to do the shoreline route, which is pretty much follow the shore at the altitude they give you) but in the unlikely event that they can't clear you, you can transition through the special flight rules area at 3500 in your direction on close to the same routing (SMO 133 radial) so you can brief the SFRA rules just in case. If you're going medium high (above 8k) the Hollywood park route can be used from van nuys. For this one though, if you're not cleared for the route at the last minute, you will likely have to go high, or do an eastbound leg towards El Monte with a few gyrations, whereas with the mini route, it would be a simple transition to the special flight rules area in the very unlikely event that the mini route was not available.
