  1. I was planning on taking my Mooney to Willmar this Sunday for a strip and reseal . The trip from Dallas is definitely going to be long, but now weather is starting to look like an issue as well. Im newly IFR rated so I try to keep conservative personal minimums. Since I have almost no icing protection in the J model, that is my biggest concern right now. How cold does it need to be that you are not worried about picking up ice in the clouds? What about snow- is there a problem flying through it? Thanks Stefan
  2. Wow...thanks for finding one - I've been looking on Ebay, but did not see that one. New one is $500!!!
  3. I'm trying to see if I can find a used one...the new ones are a rip-off
  4. Looking for a alternate static valve for my 1989 M20J. P/N is A-1390. thanks, Stefan
  5. Unless the injector was completely clogged, you'd actually see a higher EGT if you have a partially clogged injector when running rich of peak.
  6. I removed the storm window to change the seal. In the process, I noticed just how old the plastic was...scratched, yellowed... Is there a way to bring it back to its original clarity and remove the scratches? There is one for automobile headlights so I'm sure there has to be something that can be done for our plastic windows.
  7. Thanks guys. This has been helpful. Looks like a regular strip and reseal, and use the left over money to buy 1000 gallons of 100LL and fly around with those newly sealed tanks...
  8. In the process of negociating that...
  9. Hello The time has come for my bird to get a strip and reseal. I will stay with wet tanks, and its going to be either weep no more or the Florida place. They both seem good options. One option is to add the long range tanks at this time (around $6500 extra). I plan on owning the airplane for another 3-4 years then selling (looking for something Turbo and ice protection). In terms of selling the airplane, does having the long range tanks help significantly? Am I going to recoup most of the expense, or will it be a sunk cost? An advantage would of course be even if I don't recoup a significant amount of the cost but I get to sell it fairly fast. My mission does not involve flying great distances often. Sometimes I toy with the idea of flying from Houston to Cancun over the gulf, but then the thought of single engine over a big ole pond makes me reconsider. Another issue is accurate fuel management. It seems like most owners with the long range tanks have this problem. What do you guys think Thanks Stefan
  10. My plane in in the annual right now (owner assisted). This is my gear actuator - do we need to take this off and disassemble it to add grease to it, or is this a newer actuator that does not need it? It seems quite difficult to take take it off and disassemble it. The service manual is not helpful. The airplane is 1989 J model. Thanks guys Stefan
  11. Hey Jetdriven Do you have any estimates regarding the seal? Mine is starting to peel off... Stefan
  12. Piloto - I may not be understanding exactly what you are describing - but it seems that the valves you have on, have the drain holes higher than the factory ones. While indeed they would not get debris, aren't you draining from a point higher in the tank? You can then have a layer of water at the bottom, yet you would not know since the drain hole is above it. Stefan
  13. Thanks so much guys. I was a bit nervous about those big rocks I need to go over since I have not done mountain flying before, but it seems doable. I plan on an early morning departure. Stefan
  14. Thinking of taking a trip towards the end of September? Has anyone done something similar before? Any advice? I would go VFR, and I have a J model. Stefan
  15. What kind of engine? Dual magneto? Do you have an engine monitor? Consider doing an in flight mag check lean of peak before you blame the mags. Read about the procedure on mike busch's webinars, so that if the engine quits during the procedure you don't go back to both mags immediately. Stefan
  16. Have the same thing, very faint streaks. I had them before and after prop overhaul. I think it's normal. Stefan
  17. I asked my avionics shop about the fast response probes....apparently they need a smaller caliber hole than the slow response ones, so they would have had to weld the holes already made, then make new holes. I decided not to go that way...
  18. I did talk to EI, multiple times. It got to the point that they gave in and sent me another fuel transducer. I'll call them again specifically about the connections and will also check them with my mechanic. I have the slow response probes, so all bets are off regarding how fast fuel flow correlates with EGTs. Again, it's very strange to be leaning the engine, watch the EGTs go up, yet nothing changing with the fuel flow for a full minute, then followed by oscillations, with values that are at times higher than the value where it was initially stuck at.
  19. Yeah, not easy to find a servo to borrow. Interestingly enough, turning on the boost pump gets rid of the fuel pressure oscillations (I basically get 27 psi constantly), but does not get rid of the fuel flow oscillations
  20. New hoses last year firewall forward. Original lines from the tanks to the firewall. No evidence of fuel leaking tho, including no smell.
  21. Lionudakis- that's what I was thinking may be going on. Not sure how to test for that. The fuel pump was changed because of the fuel pressure fluctuations on the old pump...I think it is unlikely to get a new pump and show the exact same behavior. Replacing the servo may end up the last step, but I want to make sure I look into everything before I take such a step. I just overhauled the system and it was not cheap. The airplane has the original 1989 engine on it with 1850 hours. The fuel selector valve and gascolator are also original and have not been overhauled. I plan on going beyond tbo if possible, but in the same time not sink in a lot of money on an engine that is near overhaul.
  22. Would turning on the boost pump stop the fluctuations In fuel flow as we'll or just in fuel pressure? This is becoming one expensive problem that I'm chasing
  23. Yeah....did that too. It's tight. Looks like I'm either drawing air in (although no fuel evidence of a leak) in which case possible culprits would be fuel selector valve, gascolator or a line, vs a connection issue with the monitor. Not sure what's the best way to investigate if I have a leak...
  24. Brand new sensor. This happened since install. Called EI, they sent me another sensor, still the same problem. Oscillations occur even when I don't touch the mixture. Connections have been checked as well...hence my concern this is real, and wondering what it could be. However, no evidence of a significant fuel leak.
  25. I keep a helicopter helmet in the back seat. If it is a survivable crash, it should help with possible head trauma. My 3 point seat belts are 30 years old...what's the best way to replace them?
