  1. Quote: edgargravel You folks remember "Position and Hold?" That too is now gone (at least in Canada) and replaced by the ICAO agreed phrase: "Lining up." Coming soon to an ATC unit near you.
  2. Here is a little tip that was shown to me. I can't explain it in technical terms but the iPad keeps apps running in the back ground. If you press the button at the bottom of the screen twice, it will pull up a window and you will be amazed at all the apps running in the background. I was told this can add to battery drain. To get rid of them, hold an icon for a couple of seconds and they will all become active fore deletion. There may be another way to get rid of them or an app killer or something. Again, I have no idea if there is any truth to this or not but they are there. I keep mine deleted ever so often. Chris
  3. "Type and altitude unknown." This is why controllers prefer you call for FF. I can't remember the last time I denied the service although there have been times I was simply too busy. I would much rather know who you are and what altitude you are at in order to provide everybody good service. Even if you are squawking a dozen and ALT, we still can't rely on that altitude readout until we verify it is correct. That being said, never let FF give you a false sense of security and let your scan falter. Traffic advisories are on a workload permitting basis. If the controller gets busy with other duties, he very well may miss a traffic call to you. I an not IFR rated (yet) and I always ask for flight following. It is a service your taxes pay for so use it. Then again, there are some pilots that find ATC as a PITA and avoid us when able. We try not to be that way! Chris
  4. Great site! Thanks for your hard work with it! Chris
  5. Some more pattern entry reading! Chris
  6. He (read the head man in charge) should be blamed for anything that happens on his watch. The buck stops with him. We've all heard the saying crap rolls down hill, but in reality, it rolls up hill, too. Let somebody down the line go afoul and there will be a head hunt for somebody up the chain. Sometimes, it the head honcho! Chris
  7. West Jefferson/Jefferson, NC has a lot of good hiking nearby. Ashe County airport very close by (KGEV). Very nice airport and great folks at the FBO. Chris
  8. We are flying ours to Paul at Weepnomore the last week of October for a reseal on both tanks. We are only seeping right now, but it is enough to start removing paint underneath. Chris
  9. Austin, Are you keeping your Mooney based at UKF? My partner and I keep ours at Ashe County (GEV) not far from you. When I have it, I base it at Johnston County (JNX). Congrats are getting her home. Chris N201PT
  10. Congrats on your Mooney! My partner and I flew our J from Van Nuys, CA to Raleigh back in March. VFR the whole trip. It was fantastic.
  11. <> As long as they have a transponder...
  12. Very true, rogerl. 201er, not sure why you weren't advised of the traffic you were encountering. On that note, there are no seperation services inside Class D airspace for VFR aircraft. Your point was well taken, though!
  13. It is fun to watch traffic flow at a busy non-towered airport! You said it with everybody knew what everybody else was doing! This thread veered off the runway for some reason. I was just relaying an experience that may have happened to everybody before but, not me. It is imperative to be alert and paying attention not only to our airplanes but our traffic at ANY airport, towered or not. Most mid air collisions happen within 5 miles of an airport below 3000 feet. I guess I was stating the obvious from the get go. I am from the south and we do use that phrase a bunch. Ya 'll be careful! Duh!
  14. My bad. I forgot to put on my pilot hat. We don't say non towered airports on the air traffic side. It is uncontrolled meaning exactly the same thing as non towered. AOPA doesn't like implying pilots are out of control at non towered fields...oops..there I go again...airports or aerodromes. I can get my head around the concept. If I offended anyone..my apologies!!
  15. I had an experience that scared the living daylights out of me this past week. I was at my local airport, gathering my belongings out of the J and a PA28 taxied by for a departure from the displaced landing threshold for Rwy 21. They are adding an overrun for Rwy 03, so Rwy 21 has a displaced threshold for landing. Full length available for departure. It was a very hot (mid 90's at 1030A) morning. No biggie really but I was thinking why wouldn't you just use the full length. Pilot's perogative. Here's where I got scared. I was on the wing walk bent over looking into the Mooney and something just told me to watch the Cherokee depart. I turned around as he was powered up and rolling and I instictively scanned the runway (I'm ATC..can't help it) and sure as shine, there was a C172 on a 1/4 mile final, opposite direction, for Rwy 03!! I literally punched 911 into my cell (didn't call) and jumped off the wing and just knew there was going to be a collision. The Cherokee got airborne and the Cessna pulled to the right and stopped. It may not have been as close in reality as it appeared but, it was an incredibly dangerous situation nonetheless. I have no idea which of the two was confused as to where the other one was or if one or the other was not communicating on unicom. It is just a really good reminder to keep your eyes open all the time, especially at an uncontrolled field. It certainly got my heart pumping!
  16. I just wanted to say that I am really enjoying this forum. Lots of great information here. I am a low time private and part owner of a 77 M20J. I was very apprehensive about the Mooney after reading up on all I could find on the net. I have been blown away at how well the Mooney handles. Fly it by the numbers and it lands like a dream. What a great airplane! Only complaint is I don't get to fly it enough and it is a little tight for a hefty fella. Good incentive to drop some pounds!! Chris
