  1. Okay, I think I figured it out, but I'd still like to know what people (such as you) have as their empty weight, arm, and moment (including oil). It doesn't seem right and I'm going back to them to talk some more about it. -nope I thought I had...
  2. Hi everyone, So I got the Mooney back with the speed brakes and I'm trying to figure out my weight and balance. The problem is I have had my engine changed to the A3B6 and my book still has the moment and arm from before the engine change (the one that is on 6-5 in my manual). I have the correct new weight for the plane (with oil and no fuel). How do I know what my "arm" is now that I've added speed brakes (9 lbs.) and the engine is 3 pounds heavier? Anyone with a J that has an empty weight near 1872 want to let me know what their arm and moment is for comparison? Thanks!
  3. If history has taught us anything, eventually, they will increase it to the maximum amount they feel they can get away with. Airplane owners are too easy a target.
  4. So...still waiting for my installation to be finished. It's looking like tomorrow morning now. The brakes are done, but I had to have my formal weight and balance redone as it mysteriously disappeared.
  5. Don, Fantastic, wonderful write-up. Not using them below 100 ft. is info that will be very valuable to me. Also, the comments about how to use them when told to "keep up the speed" are important as that is one of the reasons I decided to get the brakes (I hear this a lot at KBUR). Thanks! You've just written the definitive guide to using speed brakes in a Mooney!
  6. Come back Don, I once bought your landing DVD...
  7. Thanks Mitch. I'll report back on my experiences in the weeks to come.
  8. I'm using this vibrating pilot's watch: http://sportys.com/PilotShop/product/14459 The idea is that it will remind me to switch the tanks, but I keep forgetting to set it I've added it to my checklist now.
  9. I have plans on the 40th.
  10. It can take a couple of years. I just bought a plane in May, so I'm pretty up on the market. If you want to shoot me the specs of what you're looking for (and price range), I'll look around, for free obviously. Be advised, it took me two and a half years. You'll kiss a lot of frogs. Then, just when you're ready to give up... All the other suggestions are worth following up on. You'll have to come at it from every direction.
  11. Does anyone use them to help braking during the rollout? If so, how much does it reduce it?
  12. Plane's in the shop...oh well, maybe for the 50th Anniversary.
  13. Thanks guys, I'll see if I can get that article.
  14. My understanding is that with gusty winds people like to land with them deployed (with added power). It's an issue for me as one of my main destinations is Apple Valley (in the middle of the desert with strong winds). I've also heard of people deploying them just before flare to keep the plane from floating, but I'm in the learning phase.
  15. Okay, so I'm picking up the plane on Monday with the new speed brakes. Here's my question...when you land with them extended do you have flaps all the way down or partial? I'm sure it depends, but if were a regular, light wind day. Any thoughts on how you use them on high wind days, etc. are appreciated. Thanks!
  16. I hope Jolie's okay.
  17. My wife suggested...Pat.
  18. I've had her/him for only a couple months, but I'm having a blast! I call her/him "Victor" because of the callsign, but lately I've wondered if he/she is a female (yes, I've looked under the tail).
  19. Speed brakes! Happy B-Day Philip. I'm tomorrow! Pic of install in gallery (from today).
  20. Nope. Here's a hint...it'll help me go faster by being able to go slow...faster.
  21. My wife is giving 77V an upgrade for my birthday. What do you think it is (Mitch and Jolie can't play because they know)?
  22. Would you say it preferable to run at peak than at 50 ROP?
  23. I was a little disappointed with the story. I also own the original 1982 Flying article, so naturally I had to have the pair. I felt the reporter didn't do his research. Come on, he didn't know why the entire tail section moves...to reduce drag. He thinks greasers are uncommon? I'm a new 201 pilot and I've rolled a few on already (the type where there you can barely tell the plane has touched the runway). Not the best handling? Maybe he doesn't fly IFR?
  24. Lasar says they decrease stall by 2 miles an hour. I have them and my plane does seem to have unusually good handling just above stall, but it may be my imagination.
