  1. Quote: rbridges alright, you guys made me look way back for this. I was mistaken. The 201 yokes and panel were installed in '95 by Coy Jacobs. The windshield and cowling were installed in '88 by the Mod Squad in Fenton, MO. A form 337 was used. It references 337 dated June 9, 1982: refer N670207
  2. I was one of the first to install the Scimitar/ Top Prop Conversion on my '70 E' back when they first came out. I can without a doubt tell you that is the one speed mod that i can feel the difference on. I gained an easy 8 MPH increase in speed (no BS), but I lost a little torque on the takeoff roll. It's a good trade-off in my opinion. Thats the good. The bad was the original Aluminum spinner. The design flaw was the torque pulses generated by the 200HP engine were too much for the attatchment points on the spinner...a spinner that had no bulkhead attachment. I was also the unfortunate victim of a spinner blow-up in flight which tore up my front cowling (and a few other options). All SB's had been complied with up to that point. I now have a short J . Anyway, that was the final straw for Hartzell and just after they issued the AD to replace the spinners with the composite on the 'E' models only. The 'J' models are fine because they have room for the additional bulkhead. So there you have a little bit of spinner history for those of you considering the swap. I still stand behind my statement "It's the best speed mod I've ever done to my mooney" George
  3. So did you make the North/South taxiway? You're here to post about it, so you must have been able to affect a reasonable outcome.
  4. I would use 1.6nm per 1000ft to build in a fudge factor. Also, It's been said by many more experienced pilots than I that as a rule of thunb, slowing enough to stop the prop at lower altitudes would likely provide diminished returns as the the time spent at less than best glide speed and the resultant pitch down (and altitude loss) to reattain best glide would likely mean that it's better to glide with the fan turning at anything below ~7K. Mooneys may be somewhat better because of the airframe's willingness to gather speed quickly.
  5. Quote: Mooney65E Jorge, Nice looking cowl on your E. How much is involved with removing the lower cowl on your modified E for oil changes and routine inspections? Is it as easy as removing the old stock side panels?
  6. Well....so much for Johnson Bars never failing
  7. Quote: anAscendancy George you wouldn't happen to have the break down of parts and part numbers? I have the cowl with the cowl flaps but I know thats only part of the battle. Neat thing is Airforms.biz makes the complete baffling for 1200.00. I just need the cowl flap linkage and the induction parts. I think I'm going to get rid of the ram air induction. I hear that it doesn't do much with the J cowl. On my E I get about 1 full inch of manifold pressure when using the ram air induction at altitude. It really is a kick in the pants for my E. But again with the J cowl I hear barely a 1/4 inch of manifold pressure. A guy told me he was using the ram air induction and something got in through the ram air hole and he heard it going through his engine. What it was could only be speculated but that also could be a concern.
  8. Quote: takair Nice! Jorge, did you get it field approved or were you able to find somebody with an STC? Also, any performance numbers you are willing to share? I have heard that an E with 201 mods is faster than a 201.
  9. You mean like this? It's not easy...took 8 months, and most of it was looking for parts. This is my '70 'E' to 'J'. Pretty much a short J. Factory parts are no longer available. Especially in the ducting and sheetmetal work for the cooling. Good Luck
  10. Is G-Force no longer at CAK? They did a good prebuy for my old M20J.
  11. Ok, I have to chime in this one, but first some pre-qualifying information. I'm 6'1" 240 so I'm a big guy. I have the 3g/wi-fi version of the IPAD. I've settled on Foreflight for my software and have now logged about 40 hours with it in real-time flying (much more pre-flighting and learning). I've had my IPAD now for about 6 months and have finally ditched the paper stuff. I purchased 2 products, Foreflight, and Skycharts. I purchased Skycharts for some information on Special Use Areas (MOA's, ...) that was lacking on earlier versions of Foreflight. I did mention this to Foreflight back in January and they said they would consider adding it to future releases....they did . So, with the last major update Foreflight came out with they pretty much made my skycharts un-necessary. I just returned from 20 hours flight time over 2 days on a trip from ELP to SFF and back. The way up via Las Vegas and the way back via Denver. Lot's of in-flight time and a chance to try out (learn) all of the features and try out a couple of different kneeboard options. What I ended up with will surprise you. Here's my 2 Cents. 1. First off, the topic of this post: Which holder. I purchased everything from a basic kneeboard holder to the expensive Mygolflight case (which is beautiful by the way). What I've found the most comfortable was to have it sitting on my lap with NO HOLDER in a landscape mode. The Mygoflight, while impressive, was too cumbersome to work with for when I needed to tilt the pad because of issues with the sun. That one issue is what pretty much renders ANY HOLDER useless. There are times when you need to tilt it or simply lift it closer to you and the best that I have found is to simply have it laying on my lap. It doesn't bother me nor does it slide around, it's perfectly fine on my lap. 2. The internal GPS is pretty much useless if you want to use it to track your position as well as just preflight and in-flight information. There are Several options out there, I have the Bad ELf and it works fine right off of my Lap. I also purchased the extension in case I needed to have the GPS on the dash, but I never needed it....don't waste your money on that. 3. While the battery life on the Ipad is excellent, it won't last you much more than about 3 hours of constant use while in-flight with the foreflight software running. For those long days where you have multiple 2-3 hour legs, it won't last you the whole day. I purchased a simple Ipad charger from Amazon for about $20 and it's worked flawlessly. The charging cable that came with the Bad Elf, is used instead of the Standard white apple cable and while in-flight both the Bad Elf and Ipad are charging. This method has maintained well over 95% charge throughout the entire day and when I take it out for pre-flight during rest stops, it's fully charged, ready for the next leg or the next day for that matter. 4. Contrary to popular belief (and even to foreflight's recommendation because of battery life), I leave the 3g on while in-flight and while it's not full time coverage, you do get progressive updates on weather, TAFs, Winds, Metars....while in-flight. Definitely as you near any larger city, but I even get updates while flying through most small towns and sometimes even where I would least expect to get coverage. At any rate, Leave it on and you'll have more up-to-date information as you fly along rather that just what you updated while pre-flighting. 5. Some ideas for a design on a better holder, I have an IPAD cover that has an attached keyboard that I purchased from Brookstone for about $70. I use My IPAD for everything, not just my flying, so the case was purchased specifically for facilitating my typing...nothing else. I had gotten use to just folding the cover over and leaving the IPAD on top (an option that the cover allows) and found this last trip that by having the Ipad tilted about 3-4 inches facing me (also an option with the keyboard cover) it placed the IPAD in the perfect position. So if someone is looking to make one (I might just make one myself), In my humble opinion, this would be the best position for it: Just a holder that would sit on my lap and would cover both my legs with the ipad centered with the yoke tilted facing you. This got rid of most of the glare and it was always easiest to work my foreflight software.....among other things ;-) . Keep in mind that these observations are based on my height and in a Mooney m20e to be specific.. Hope it helps someone. George.
  12. Quote: DaV8or Oh geez, if the shop is making insurance money off renting out a plane, George will never get his plane back!
  13. Quote: LT4BIRD I work next to the shop that has your aircraft. I can walk over and take a look if you like. Your not the first.
  14. Quote: fantom I'm in Ft. Lauderdale, and I hope you have the AOPA legal service, because you need an attorney.
  15. Quote: Amelia How does that slimeball stay in business? I dealt with him once- but that was long before Al Gore got the Internet to where it is today. Looks as if your mechanic's modus operandi hasn't changed a bit, and people aren't, um, coy, about calling him on what they perceive as his essential dishonesty and lousy workmanship. I bet if you know any lawyers, you could maybe hire one- and then get in line.
  16. Thanks Mike, I'll send you an email. George
  17. OK, so you've figured out the prop, yes it was a top prop issue and their customer support went out of their way to take care of the their side of it. In the interim though, we mutually agreed to have the plane ferried to Florida for repairs and there it sits. So if anyone's in the vicinity of Sarasota that's willing to lend a fellow mooney pilot a hand, by all means make yourself known. I want to at least be assured that it's not just sitting there with nothing being done to it while other planes are getting the the shops resources. From the few pictures I've received, I can see a progress, but not 5 months worth. George
  18. They are clear on the other side of the country (that's a hint for those of you that care to take a guess as to who has it). I've asked for specifically what part they are looking for and have offered to even have one made for them if I can get the technical specs. I have a couple of 201's available to copy here locally and my AP is willing to make the part and send it to them as an "owner supplied" part. It's way over there because these guys have an STC to do this conversion using factory parts....thing is, factory is not shipping these parts any more. The timing on this whole ordeal has been bad to say the least, but at any rate, I've offered the owner supplied parts route (as suggested by my ap) as well as offered to look for the part myself....Every time I do, they say they have a lead on it and should be getting it in the next few days....that's seems to be a pattern with them. george
  19. I've tried that, unfortunately, by the time I told them that a couple of months ago, they'd already gotten it to a point where I cannot fly it. They started on the repairs before getting approval from me or the ones that were going to be footing most of the bill. To give you guys a little insight, I had a spinner blow up in flight that tore up my cowl and a piece of my wing. By the time all is said and done, I'm ending up with a short 201, part of it at my cost, most at the prop manufacturer's cost. It's my understanding that a piece of ducting for the re-located oil cooler is all they're missing....or not? That's what's most troubling. It depends on which of the two happens to answer the phone and the day that I call as to the status of that missing part. Whatever the case, that's the reason I'm given for not being able to complete the plane, oh and Cruiser, it's 4 and one half months....by the end of February, they would have had the plane for 5 months. That's the reason for finally posting this thread. I'm at a point where I'm desperate and reaching out for any Ideas or suggestions. Thanks, George
  20. I'm needing a bit of advice from you legal experts out there. I've had my '70 'E' in an un-named well known shop now since October of 2010 (wait, it gets worse). Since then, we've waited for approvals from manufacturers and payments to be transacted etc..etc... After several months of "we're looking for the parts because the factory shut down" to "we've got everything and you should be ready by ??/??/??" I'm still waiting for my bird to be finished. Depending on who I speak to, (the owner, or the owner's son), the story changes every time I call. The plane has not changed appearance since December (when I got some pictures of the progress, or lack thereof). I've gone from Mid November completion times to the last one was first week in Feb '11. They're getting harder to find in the office and when I do manage to speak to either one of the two that is allowed to say anything all I can get is "we're still waiting on ????) or we finally got the misterious part and it should be ready by next week .... again!. So, long story short, do I have any legal recourse to do anything at this point, or am I basically SOL and have to wait for them to complete the task they agreed to accomplish? Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated..either here or via pm or email. I need some help please. Thanks George
  21. Quote: mooney11x Spend the extra money for S-TEC AP. Wing leveler is nice for x-country but by the time you pay for avionics shop, AP, and STC you are well on your way to a "true" AP.
  22. The PC system is the Brittain A/P without the tracking capabilities. It simply leveles the wings, however, that in itself is a great help with xcountry flying. George
