  1. I did not know that
  2. Topic was supposed to be Camguard. Stupid computer changed that without asking permission!!!
  3. Hello Mooney People, New top overhaul has gone well and have now, after about 18 hours , gone back to AD oil instead of straight mineral oil. My question is..... When can I go back to adding Camguard to the oil. If the new cylinders will still break in a little , the Camguard would??? prevent that? Thanks Everyone! Alan
  4. For today's flight , take off always full rich. I don't fly LOP. I tried it once and about 12 knots slower than usual. Mooney's are meant to go fast!. So I do ROP. usually seems to work out to 17 to 18 GPH. I will take a good look at EGT's on take off
  5. Well, I never saved or collected any data. I thought that the engine data was stored in the MFD upper SD card but it never seemed to work or I did not figure it out. Can get Sarasota Avionics in Venice to look in the #4 cylinder just to be sure it looks OK. Otherwise hopefully we will figure it out!
  6. Hi Rick, Prior to the top overhaul ( all new cylinder) the EGT spread was about the same across six cylinders. The $4 is still about 100 degrees higher. so it got my attention. The CHT's all look good and equal. Did switch the #4 with #6 , but EGT #4 is still hotter. Don't know why??
  7. Hello Mooney People Top overhaul has gone well. CHT's look good and stable. Noted that #4 EGT was running about 100 degrees higher than the others. Switched #4 EGT probe with #6 EGT now on #6 looks fine but #4 is still hot. So...question....Other than a bad probe , what will cause a higher temperature display in #4 EGT other than the probe? Could it still be part of the break in since it is a new cylinder with about 17 hours since work done? Thanks, Alan Ovation IO550
  8. Hello Mooney People, After 16 hours with new cylinders , changed the oil and went back to AD oil. Switched the $4 EGT probe and will see if the #5 cylinder now runs hotter. All the CHT probes are nicely lined up and did not change any plugs....and will check! Alan
  9. Hello Mooney People, Just had good top overhaul for IO550 AFTER 1100 HOURS. Six factory new cylinders nicely done. using straight mineral oil and have put 16 hours on new cylinders. Fliing at 75% power and intermittent very to 65 % power. Enging running very smoothly. Still number #4 cylinder EGT runs 100 degrees over others running at 75 percent power running ROP. Thinking might be bad probe??? What else would cause one EGT cylinder #4 to run hotter? Now have 16 hours since work was done and plan oil change and analysis and will carefully cut open oil filter. Look for tiny metal sparkles. Oill consumption stable now. Thinking time to go back to AD oil. Would love some opinions.... Thanks Alan N913ND Ovation KVNC
  10. I recently did a top overhaul on my just over 1000 hour IO550. I was burning oil and adding a quart every three hours. I did manage to buy six factory new cylinders. The work was done well at Sarasota Avionics at KVNC. Running alternating 75 and 65 % power. Straight mineral oil. wanted to start with longer flights so flew from Florida to Pennsylvania. About five hours each way. Running very well. And a few knots faster. No oil leaks and watching CHT's Mostly around 375 degrees at cruise. Still was not cheap. Paid $22.5 for six new cylinders and just over ten more for the work. Did not get the new cylinders re worked. Plan to change oil at 25 hours. will look carefully for and little metal scraps and hopefully not any chunks where I can read a part number. Perhaps now engine will make TBO. In Harrisburg, had ceramic coat paint covering . Had Dan at NuAero do the ceramic coating. Mooney looks new! I ask my Cirrus friends if they are getting bird strikes from the rear Alan Ovation M20R
  11. Very good discussion...Here is a question to add to the gear and flap order. Would it be reasonable to add enough power to keep the airplane flying and lessen the brisk pitch up. maybe push yoke and trim first ......and avoid a stall?? can we add that to the mix? Alan Long body M20R
  12. Hi Everyone, Thanks for the notes. I now have a bit over ten hours on my new cylinders. Did Switch from 75% to 65% power every 15 minutes. We are going to check my #4 cylinder high EGT and switch the probes around and look at the spark plugs. Thanks Alan
  13. Hello Mooney People, Just had six factory new cylinders put on Ovation. Carefully read all of Mike Busch' suggestions about how to break in properly. Spoke to Dan Lightner in Carlisle, PA about ceramic coating and flew to Harrisburg from Venice, FL with one fuel stop in Hickory, NC. Ran at 75%+ power running ROP and not overly leaning. ran well and.........10 knots faster than usual. ...no tailwind. but I did watch CHT's and EGT's. Over the flights up to Pennsylvania and back to Florida, CHT's were close to 400 and looking at EGT's , the #4 cylinder was always 50 degrees hotter than the others. I dont know why??? Would be greatful for any ideas!!! Ceramic coating is beautiful! Thanks. ( Mike Busch does not like top overalls, but he did top his Turbo 310) Alan
  14. Hello Mooney People, I have six brand new cylinders on my Ovation and understand these cylinders have to be broken in properly. I will plan some good long flights when the airplane is ready and question is which power settings and for how long. I can fly from KVNC (Venice FL) to Harrisburg PA and go non stop for a starter. Flights should be about five hours. And then land and then plan a non stop flight back. I think that should be good for starters. Can I have some advice from my fellow Mooniacs as to what power settings to use and a good choice of altitude ?? And if the power settings shoud be varied for some time intervals?? Or just set 24" and 2500 RPM and leave it there??? Thanks Everyone!! Alan
  15. wow...both are good looking...I really like the blue color. not quite so complicated.. Miy Ovation is not quite as exciting so I would pick #2 Alan N913ND
  16. Hi Paul, great advise, Thanks,, I will watch out for every retail. I have a question. Thinking that the thru bolts are not the deck bolts that attach the cylinder but just hold the case together. Should they not just have their original torque or should they be removed, relubricated and then put back in and re-torqued. .Are they not located in between the cylinders? Seemed like they shoud be left alone or should they have a torque wrench put on them to ? re tighten?? Thanks Alan
  17. Hi Skip, Thank for the note. The mechanics here at Sarasota Avionics are very competent and careful. I believe a set of new cylinders will keep me flying throught the suggesed TBO and maybe beyond. Thank you] Alan N913ND KVNC
  18. Hi Everyone, Thanks for the replies. I believe Sarasota Avionics has excellent mechanics. But having read Mike Busch, he does not like top overhalls. I think he did top his 310. I will speak to the shop about the quality of the valve guides on new cylinders. I would hope that Conti is doing better and that it is old news. I absolutely do not want to sell the airplane. It is a member of the family, but I am an old fart and concerned each year about renewing my insurance. I re attend our Mooney MAPA training every year and I hope the real training and flying 100 hours per year helps.Have never had an insurance claim in over 50 year of flying. Ovation is a 2008 with just over 1000 hours. Alan KVNC
  19. Hi, I did the STC also. Ovation 2 to Ovation 3. I take off at 2700 RPM. At 1000 AGL i dial back to 2500 for climb. . 2500 is not, in any way, a minimum. You can be more efficient and easier on the engine at a lower RPM. I hope that Skip will jump in. He is smarter than me Alan
  20. Hello Mooney People, I have six brand new cylinders , boxes not opened yet. My Ovation has over 1000 hours since factory new and adding a quart of oil around every three hours or more. Decided to take the plunge and top the engine. I have read Mike Busch's essay " Be Afraid" I have read all about lubrication, torque, cleaning ad nauseum but still nervous about it. I believe everything comes assembled in the box from Continental. ( piston rings already in cylinders etc. Thought alot of fellow Mooniacs have done this and would be glad to have some suggestions of anything to keep an eye on. Sarasota Avionics will do this and I thought I might hang around I did have one cylinder changed at the last annual and told cam looked fine. The rebuilt cylinder from last year has been fine also. The new cylinders do not include new nuts and I asked about not re using the old nuts. I have stocked up on Xanax Alan
  21. I have an Ovation 3 M20R. and I am fairly firm about 75kts indicated on final. Agree that a few knots slower works OK but it seems that anything faster can result in a bounce. After round out , I can close the throttle or leave a touch of power to keep things smooth. . And since these airplanes like to float, I am just patient. This works OK for me. Hope to see a few more opinions! Alan N913ND
  22. Mooney People, Ovation has just over one thousand TTSN and adding a quart of oil around every three hours. Last annual compression were in the fifties and boroscope did not see any valve issues. I am guessing that the rings let the oil get burned but not sure if that deserves a top. A six pack from Continental , if it can be had, is around 20K. Engine runs well and smoothly. Would be glad for some opinions. #6 cylinder was changed at last annual for very low compression and it is fine. It was not a new one as they are hard to get. It came from Zephyr Hills in Florida. Thanks Alan
  23. Mooney People Just completed the yearly course....great instructors and you learn a lot. Locations around the country. a great idea for Mooney pilots Cheers Alan N913ND
  24. That is what I will do.The 24-15. Thank you Alan
