Trim worm drive cleaning photos?
flyingchump replied to flyingchump's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Yes, the annual was recently done. The trim system is fully functional but has a tight spot I'd like to fix before anything gets worse. Like I said I've been chasing it down. All have been recently cleaned and lubed. I have verified smooth operation for the rest of the "trim system" and nothing seems to be binding. -
Gents, I have some friction in my trim that I've been chasing and I've narrowed it down to the worm drive. 66E. It certainly looks like it hasn't been cleaned and lubed in a while. I'm apprehensive about taking it apart without more information. The parts manual and service shows very little about the internals... Anyone have more detailed diagrams or photos?

Is there a effective way to make travel boards? I'd love to make a set.

Reporting back. I replaced the main bushing in the nose wheel with a 0.010 oversized on from Lasar (blue). After replacement I noticed there was still some fore/aft play on the trailing link so I ordered 0.005 oversized bushings for that too (red). The red bushings were replaced in no time flat so I decided to paint the trailing link because air plane maintenance must take at least all day per the universe... The gear feels super stable now. My IA will submit new STC/337 paperwork for all instead of trying to fix the old 337 forms from the 90's. good gear, good paperwork, good feelings!

Bolt identification help
flyingchump replied to flyingchump's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Thought I'd report back. I received a new bolt from Lasar and swapped it out. Super easy! Dan sent me a NAS6606H21. It has a slightly different head but it was better for lockwireing. After jacking up the plane I released the J bar about 3 inches (held with a bungee cord). I removed the old bolt which was barely tight... Once the bolt was removed everything stayed exactly in place. I cleaned up the area and slid in the new bolt with a slight wiggle of the main gear. Safety wire and done! Super easy. My IA will stop by to check my safety wire and preload in a few days. -
Inspecting secret fuel screen
flyingchump replied to RobertGary1's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I just got off the phone with Dan at Lasar. He told me that he didn't have any instock ATM and gave me the P/N's to order them. MS28775-114 or AN6227-12. I have not ordered or installed them yet. I wanted to document the P/N's here for historical record! https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/pnpages/AN6227B-12.php -
Bolt identification help
flyingchump replied to flyingchump's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I'm assuming there are nuts beheld these 2 bolts that I access from an inspection panel? I've got a few other discrepancies from the annual so I really don't want to be in for a pound on this one... but oncy I'm doing the work I'm sure I'll want to clean and paint everything. I just bought a set of preload tools so I'll certainly be checking them. -
Bolt identification help
flyingchump replied to flyingchump's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Now that you all helped me identify the bolt, any tips on how to replace it? It looks to me if I release the gear just a bit, until the link goes back overcenter and releases the preload, I should be able to remove the bolt. Doing this would leave the other 2 connections of the retract truss in place and I could realign it by moving the J bar or main gear until the hole lines up and the bolt is inserted. Thoughts? -
Bolt identification help
flyingchump replied to flyingchump's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
The prop is in need of balancing but its not that bad... The gear door hung a little lower than it should but no sign of abrasion on the skins. It looks like Spruce and Lasar have the bolts. I'll order one up. -

I'm glad to hear you say that. I was thinking the same thing. I'll clean the area really wall today and see what evidence shows itself. -
Need some help. My IA just found a bolt on the main gear that has the safety wire slowly cutting it in half... Picture below. We are going to replace the bolt but the parts manual is confusing me a bit. There are multiple bolts listed. It lists AN part numbers and Mooney part numbers. Are they the same? 1966 E Model

This being my first plane... I didn't know what to ask for. Good to know. I emailed Mooney yesterday to see what they can offer me. Given the power outages and temperatures in Texas right now... I'll don't expect an answer overnight. Stay warm guys! Tahir's info is enough but I need to recreate all that for my bird.

Cylinder bolts lockwired?
flyingchump replied to flyingchump's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Agreed. My annual is in 2 weeks and plan on taking care of this. -
Cylinder bolts lockwired?

Thanks. Any idea where I can read about that? Would that be somewhere in the Lycoming IO360 owners manual? -
Cylinder bolts lockwired?
flyingchump replied to flyingchump's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
The engine was last overhauled in 98, with a top in 2014. I'm betting any torque seal that was there blew away... -
With alll the snow dumped on my airport and no why to taxi or fly, I started looking at photos I took while the plane was having so maintenance done. One of the photos caught my eye and noticed that none of the cylinder bolts have lockwire on them... Seems like something that should be lockwired, no?

My nose gear has fore and aft play so its time to replace the bushing. Also replacing the steering horn and hardware... After scouring the log books I found that the bushing was replaced in 1998 with an "O/S bushing from Southwest Texas Aviation". No other info is contained. No info on 337 forms. The SWTA website has very little info. I will try calling next week. Anyone know if I can remove the Southwest Texas Aviation O/S bushing and replace it with a Lasar O/S bushing? I emailed Lasar but wont hear back until tomorrow. Until then I figured I'd polk the Mooney hive-mind.

Battery discharges with master off
flyingchump replied to Cloudmirth's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Disconnect the battery, bring it home and check it over the course of a few days (if your not flying). If your fancy you can hook it up to a voltage data logger and graph the voltage over a few days. A few arduino options out there. I've had many car batteries with internal shorts that drained the battery slowly or instantly. The slow drains are frustrating because people would look at the rest of the car/plane for a fault. Good luck. -
M20C crack found during annual. Worried.
flyingchump replied to MCDsiena's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I just called my closest MSC (air-mods) to have this SB (M20-217) done on my plane as well. They are looking into the availability of the doubler kit from Mooney. I hope its in stock. I'm hoping that the one pc belly as well as having the interior out will help the repair go a bit faster for them. We'll see... I'll be relieved to have one more item off my squawk list. -
I'm a new Mooney (66E) owner and mine does the same thing. Never shows positive. It moves slightly negative when I turn the non-led landing light on. Voltmeter always shows 14 volts. I'm looking forward to what other folks say about this.

Any idea what the proper mount is? I've looked around but can't find a mount that would attach to the tube. I have the Precision PAI-700 Compass. Is this the right mount? https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/inpages/pacmovmn.php This looks like the mount that will attach to the center section of the 2 piece windshield that I already have. Will this also mount to the center post once the 1 piece windshield is installed?
