do you have an estimate on the total cost after install? you mention 20k for parts but what is the projected labor install? I'm not familiar with the Dynon AP, what are its capabilities and it not approved for Mooney yet right? so will you have an AP or just wait till approved (can you install one to act as a wing leveler or track a course just not shoot approaches?)

First time I declared an emergency…
cwaters replied to Candy man's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
I had the same thing recently around thanksgiving. low voltage light came on and we were about 45 min from home. Told ATC and they asked if we were declaring, told them not at this time and we make a stop at a airport enroute, ran the checklist and the light went off. We stayed on the ground for a little bit longer to confirm it was off then took off to cont our trip. got back on with ATC and let them know we were back and making our way home. The tower at our home airport seemed to hold traffic out longer than normal incase we lost comms but other than that we were fine with no emergency declared -
potentially but a new 175 is still 4.5AMU, If I could "swap" my 430 for a 430W I'd be looking at ~2AMU in difference I think. and not need to wire in an entirely new unit and create a 3rd nav system in the plane (175, 430, Klx 155)
-
this is likely what will happen if the shop has a 430W laying around that they will swap me with some $$ thrown in, the ADSB-out I'm happy with for now and using a stratus for "in" and it works rather well with the ipad for dysplay
-
yeah I was never worried about getting lost as much as a lost comms situation and no backup at all and the slight annoyance of only one radio, as you point out there is a lot of dead space there that I could leave the 155 (the resale value is not enough to really entice me to pull it anyway)
-
I like the idea of pre-wiring for the waas antenna or maybe the shop having a unit sitting on a shelf. thanks for the thoughts

My current standard mission is 450nm and I'm about to move making that trip (less often) 1000nm. The airports I use and will use often either have an ILS nearby or have one on field still.
-
I primarily fly the CDI on the 430 now on XC flights, the only annoyance then is not having a second comm unit (listen to guard, backup, listen to ATIS ...)
-
I’d love to do it all at once but don’t have the budget to do it all in one step right now. Unless you want to donate might be able to swing it if i did a single g5 to run the gfc 500 but then wouldn’t have the hsi

By going with the 375 and selling my 155 I would be losing a backup comm/nav right ? Unless I read it wrong the 375 is just gps and a transponder i like the secondary comm and backup nav radio are you saying get rid of both sets of needles?
-
I understand your reasoning thank you for it. my average trip is 400-500nm, on a great day its easy and relaxing, but on a rough day its exhausting and in a few months that trip extends to about 1000 nm from Co to Ga (Ideally 1 day) so thats one of the main drivers for the AP being higher on the list I guess. If it were possible I'd love to do it all but that just won't happen. I'm not sure what selling some of the equiptment coming out would "buy back" for the budget for me either.

I would love to go to a WAAS unit and think going to a WAAS 430 is not really a great idea given its still a 430 and still old tech so would look at the 650 but just not in the budget. I was ranking it as my #3 option if budget is there (I don't think it will be) because I don't know yet if I want to get rid of my 430. I would likely keep it and move it to #2 spot and kill the 155 on the co pilot side, that way I have 2 GPS/Nav/Comm units in the plane why would you consider the AP as bonus points? The only things I'm gaining from the WAAS are lower approaches and alternate RNAV right? I could likely swing the GTN upgrade if I did a single G5 not dual G5 and I think the G5 HSI is more important
-
oh ok, honestly I had not given that much thought given I don't use the music capability of the audio panel I always just Bluetooth to my headset (Zulu 3). I could likely just nix those all together. yes the plan was to drop the vacuum system including the guage are you also saying move the master and lights toggles to the top of the panel ? why

red knob is the cowl flaps, 430 is non-Waas what junk are you referring to

Here is a picture of my current panel. I am starting to think about updating (on a budget) and wanted to get some advice. Currently no AP so that is my main goal. Its a good IFR platform now (I got my IFR this past Aug 2021 in it and feel very comfortable in it) but I'm starting to fly a bit more single pilot IFR and long XC and feel an good AP is a worthy investment. I'm happy for now with the 430 (non-W) so I'm thinking dual G-5 and GFC 500, but also questioning if waiting on the Dynon system would be worth it. the dual G-5 and GFC500 is estimated to be about 30k fully installed. the Dynon system is looking like it would be about the same. I'd like to stay around the 25-30k mark

I'm looking at getting a SkyOx system (2 person) so I can unlock some of the higher altitudes for my J. looks like it will be about between 600 and 800 and I was looking for some advice to see if anyone had a better system for about the same price or lower. I was looking on ebay and amazon at bottles and regulators and have no clue what I'm looking at to understand what to buy to build a system.

I don't have access to my logs at the current moment and won't for about 2 weeks. I'll have to check when I get back.

thanks, My mind when straight to Alternator but the voltage regulator makes more sense.

Hey everyone, I have a '77 J that I got a little less than a year ago and have fallen in love with and put almost 100 hrs on it so far. It's my first plane and I don't know a ton on ownership yet. Last annual was just a few months ago and clean bill of health was issued. My wife an I flew about 1 hr to see some family for thanksgiving on Wednesday and had no issues. On the return trip the following day we had a low voltage warning light come on about 20-30 min into the flight. I went through the checklist and cycled power and the breaker and had no success. Landed at an airport about half way back home and cycled the checklist again leaving the power off for a bit longer and that seemed to do the trick. We continued the trip (only about 15-20 min left till home field) after an extended time on the ground with everything running and monitoring the EDM 900 voltage reading. We got the warning again about 5 min from landing. The voltage was reading about 13.5 steady for a few minutes then began to fluctuate down into the mid 12s then dropped to low 11V and stayed there wile amps were about -8 with minimal equipment on. I've got a call into the local mechanic on the home field to take a look but figured I'd come here and see if someone with some experience had any suggestions that might help narrow the search for the issue or tell me I'm looking at the wrong thing thinking its the alternator going out on me.

yeah, I ended up leaving her back east in her hangar and finding a Mooney friend to fly her a few hrs a month to keep her healthy. I'm looking for some new Mooney friends in the area that would want to fly some to explore and stay sharp
-
HAHA I'm not sure the meaning behind why its "AGL" as the name of the shop, but they are located at foothills airport in morgantown, NC

Just an update: I ended up getting the plane back the day before leaving for my trip and decided to leave her home and have a new Mooney friend exercise her while I'm gone. He has been sending me pictures and pireps of her flying and how she is behaving. I'm having some withdraws from not having the ability to get in the cockpit for 3-4 weeks now. In the end I wish I had flown her out here but know it was the right choice with the situation I had and the tight timelines I was presented. Thank you all for your advice and guidance.

I have requested to be on it and requested it be shared, I can't message him directly on here either as he can't receive messages.

I am in some training for the next few months at Edwards AFB in southern California and was wondering if there are any MSer in the area that might want to meet up. I know the map is maintained and saw some posts about it a while back but never saw the link to it .

Done, thanks for the advice. I had nothing but the best experience with them. They are super nice and down to earth like you said. They were understanding of my timeline and did what they could to help me out and get it done in time.
