  1. Yeah it's truly configured for a standby. Per STC. That's news! Is this similar to G3X where you can type in any frequency? Never saw this UI anywhere before. Or is it loading frequencies from the waypoint info UI?
  2. With a new panel, after you remove the 3 engine gauges in the CB panel there’s enough room to accommodate CBs for the switches. It also allows you to move the headphone/mic jacks into the panel vs having them on a separate metal piece below the panel.
  3. That display setup looks like my planned setup. @201Mooniac curious if you think placing the EIS above the ADI might be a better way to go.
  4. Really boils down to looks and personal preferences. Mooney went Carling Contura V switches for the newer models and this is what the Maxwells recommend as well. You can get them straight from Mooney or through Carling distributors. I prefer their looks and you can get custom actuators (switch covers) and design them to your heart's content. They are cheap to replace and you can stock up if you are worried.
  5. You could use a continuity tester to see if the wire goes to the typically suspect locations if you don't have the schematics. Of course, with an A&P and follow all the safety precautions first! Typical suspect locations: One of the terminals on the back of the alternator Voltage Regulator ALT field switch Back of the annunciator panel (guess) Could use the Wire Tone Tracer to trace it too. Will take time but doable.

  8. I used the Savvy MX plan for the first two years after my initial purchase, but I realized that I typically don't have issues talking to shops and coordinating repairs and annuals myself. I got lucky with good shops within a stone's football throw of KTTD. So, I switched down to Savvy Q&A and have been a happy customer since. The breakdown assistance program is like having a good friend you can call on when the need arises. For those who do not want to or don't have the time to tackle MX themselves, Savvy MX is a great option, though there are limitations, so check with them on what's not covered or what costs extra. Having said that, I think this forum is a great platform, and I can't begin to count the innumerable ways it has helped me in the past four years. I plan on attending MooneyMax two weeks from now and buying them a beer or two!

  11. Does anyone know the color of the LEDs being used for the glareshield in the new Acclaim/Ovation Ultras? Trying to find out what Mooney is going standard with on the new dark colored panels with full glass - whether its red, amber or white. This one photo I found suggests white, but colors could be deceiving.

On the topic of EIS - although the EIS on the GI-275 display may be smaller to some, I chose that because, along with separation from PFD, you have a lot more information presented to you on the main screen without having to pull up additional panel. It matches the information provided in JPI 900 / 830 display on page 1. I especially like the CHT & EGT per cylinder bar graph with TIT information.
  13. You are right - I always thought the G3X touch was slightly lower in resolution, but I stand corrected. If you already have spare GI-275s or access to cheaper GI-275s, then it's worth going with G500TXi to allow the 275 to act as a full standby and one that can drive the GFC. The STC for G3X primary with GI-275 standby doesn't allow the GFC 500 to be driven by the GI-275 if PFD fails.
  14. My plane is in the shop for panel overhaul. Going with G500TXi with GI-275 standby and discrete GI-275 EIS. Didn't want to tie in EIS in the same unit as the PFD just inc case it fails. Also, the panel looks more symmetrical & appealing to me with the two circles breaking up the boxes. To each their own You don't need the GI-275 ADAHRS+AP if you are going with GFC-500. That unit can drive non-Garmin APs as well as GFC-500. But you can use a GI-275 ADAHRS unit for standby and drive the GFC-500. I am going with the same setup for AP and standby and this configuration has been vetted by the local dealer. I will be offering my ADAHRS+AP unit for sale in the near future. If you are still not convinced, just chat with a local Garmin dealer. The benefits of the TXi system is the higher resolution and the extra processing power. Yes - you do not get to control the extra LRUs straight from the screen in front of you but the speed at which things boot up is sure nice. I have the GTN 750 which is getting upgraded to GTN 750xi. I bought a used 650xi and that thing booted up in seconds that I could count on my fingers vs 30 or seconds on the 750. Also, the higher resolution is great for charts. Re: MFD - you really don't need it but can use that money to upgrade the nav/comm stack. These devices are reliable based on feedback from members on this forum. Especially if you have a 275 as standby. The one thing you would want to consider the XI MFD is for the GBB-54 battery which is only allowed to connect to the 7" MFD to power the backup system according to the STC. Annoying as hell, but this might tilt you towards installing the MFD. If you are interested, take a look at this thread where I will be posting updates:
  15. My panel is far from being finished at this point so can't do any manual tests. But yeah, after thinking about it, doesn't make much sense. We are trying to come up with a plan for 2 failures - PFD and electrical. Most likely will be one or the other, but in case both do fail, should have enough navigation capability to land somewhere quickly.

  17. Turns out I have a spare GMU-11 from the anticipated older GI-275 setup. Will ask the shop to see if I can have this be installed in the right wing (left one has the GMU-44). And if not, then help me find a better backup solution. Though I agree with @PT20J, the vertical card compass is the last resort in case of electrical failure that would affect the GTNs as well as rest of the avionics once the battery dies.
  18. Just a note - the backup battery GBB-54 on the G500TXi is only allowed if you have a dedicated MFD display. If you have PFD and EIS - the GBB is not allowed to be backup. Why? Joys of Garmin....

  20. I am trying to fix up my interior panels and initially had plans for epoxy resin and fiberglass for back support. Ended up deciding to go with homemade ABS slurry with fiberglass for support. Let us know how it goes!
  21. @Fix yeah the shroud is different part number, see the attached image from Marc. With the epoxy treatment, make sure it bonds well with the plastic. Given its ABS (guess), it can de-laminate when pressure is applied the wrong way. The first shop used excessive RTV to fix mine, of course I hated it and had to replace it.

  23. Yep, asked Matt to replace the blue capacitor for the same reasons you have. He was curious about retaining the RF filter (gray box) where the alternator output connects to (far right) in the picture. Tempted to replace that too while we are in here.
  24. Contact Lasar - I ordered through them a couple of years ago. @Marc_B has the right IPC part info for the "Shroud Assembly". Lasar can get you the right part number based on your serial number and they may have one in stock or can get you one from Mooney. Their online parts database isn't always up to date.
  25. Time for an update. The aircraft has been at the shop for about 2 weeks and there has been quite a bit of progress both on and off the aircraft. It took a bit to untangle the mess left behind by the previous shop but that's now finally done. GMU-44 has been installed and grounds pulled in (previously there were several by the wing tip). They are going through the stock harness now to see what's needed and what's not. In parallel, we have been working on panel iterations, and of course, scope creek on avionics @donkaye I talked to the shop and managed to get a good deal on a 750Xi so the the nav/comm stack will be completely Xi series GTNs paired with the G500TXi and the GI-275s. Did have one question for folks that did a full panel transformation. Did you end up retaining the RF filter in the circuit breaker panel? Or replace with something new? Or just get rid of it?
