  1. This was stage 1. We discussed the patch and decided to go all the way to the rivets around it. More structurally sound and I think will look more professional and unnoticeable. 100% will post photos. Estimated time is 12-15 hours of work, aside from the 2-3 months it would take my AME
  2. Started work on the repair today. Decision was made to not remove the entire tail, and completely replace both skins. Instead, trimming back to the rivets around the damage, replacing the rib, and patching that way. Tech needed to check and see if he required a doubler around the river line, so he left this as is for now. 2024 aluminum should be here Monday, and repair completed Tuesday night ready for paint.
  3. Precisely. My AME-S Buddy is willing to do the work, but wanted to know if he could sign off on his own (if it was not Primary), or required an AME-O to do that for him. As @M20Doc suggested, there isn't a structural manual for older Mooneys. Mooney did send me the copies for Structure and Stabilizers for the M20R, and stated it's more in depth and is also built the same way as the old ones. He followed up by asking engineering, and they confirmed it's Primary. As a primary structure, AME-O must sign off. Not a big deal, as he's under contract with one, and it will be done in accordance with Transport Canada Rules and Regulations.
  4. Showed a friend who flies my Mooney from time to time these photos. Told him, "Anyone who leads this DC-3 repair in the Antarctic, and can get the plane back home, is more than free to work on my Mooney!"
  5. And the answer straight from Mooney Engineering: Yes - It is Primary Structure - Also you may want to check some other items:Inspect the following:1. Check free play of empennage.2. Empennage and aft tailcone for deformity and sheared rivets.3. Stabilizer trim hinges, trim actuator brackets, trim actuator fitting at empennage, and attaching hardware.4. Hardware attaching top hinge brackets to tailcone.5. Rudder push/pull tubes.
  6. Coming from an irrigation background, tubing diameter doesn’t change pressure. 99% of the people get it wrong when you ask them, “what is happening when you put your thumb over the end of a Garden hose?” You are not increasing pressure (the pressure of the water source, less friction, from the house is constant), you’re increasing velocity.
  7. The structural guy doing the skin repair is saying that it needs to be called out in the POH or Maintenance manual as a Primary Structure. I don’t see it anywhere in there. Either way, he’s got his AME-O ready and willing to sign off on it, so no big deal. I was more curious myself to see if anyone has seen it called out.
  8. @KSMooniac much appreciated. It’ll be repaired either way this weekend. Just uncertain if it’ll need a second signature or not.
  9. I've been rooting through POH, Maintenance Manuals, Service Manuals, but I have yet to find what I'm looking for... I need to know whether Mooney classifies the vertical stab leading edge skins as primary structure??? Having the Skins removed, replaced this weekend, and my AME-S is wondering if he's going to require an AME-O sign off or not? TIA Everyone! This site has been a wealth of information.
  10. Saved me a trip across town! Thank you sir!
  11. Because I was in a rush, and printed this off real quick at the office.... anyone have a parts catalog, and could give me the part number of #14 on a 74 M20F? i grabbed the wrong breakdown and am now stuck at the house for a couple hours. TIA
  12. Side note: Anyone who oversees this, should be fine to work on my bird! He’s also been to the Antarctic to repair downed aircraft, and flown them off the snow after repair.
  13. Hi John, I actually sent the photos to a Structural Engineer friend of mine that works for Westjet. Pretty sure he’s giving me the friends and family discount, but he figures he could get it done, less a repaint, in a weekend and under the cost and install of a new vertical stab. I’m going to look for a new rib, and what parts are needed and go from there. If I’m up in the air in less than 3 weeks, I’m a happy happy man. Will definitely document the repair as I go along.
  14. I had a first time passenger with me, and I said the same thing several times to him. They’re well built birds! Obviously stronger than a goose.
  15. I actually took off part of the feathers and breast before I took the photo. Should’ve left it on, but wanted to see damage.
  16. Foggy. I mean. Broken. Damaged. Write off. Lol. Kidding. Think it’s okay. But I will take a closer look
  17. My AME took a look. This is what he said: ”There’s three ribs and two skins that make up the vertical stabilizer. You’ve damaged one rib and both skins. You’d be better off finding a salvaged tail fin and replacing.” I tend to agree. But, I’ll wait and see what insurance says next week. Their money, their call. Sounds like it’ll be more economical to bolt on a new fin.
  18. Or the rib. Think the whole vertical stab is coming off.
  19. In this case, BS stands for Bird Strike. Hit a Canada Goose on take off, at about 300 AGL. Flock was landing on a field to feed, I tried to climb over them, and got past 8 of the 9. One flared up, hit the windshield, and ended up on the Vertical Tail. If anyone has a lead on a cheapish Vertical Fin for a 74 M20F, I'm all ears.
  20. Meh. Heat gun and patience. You can redo an entire glareshield that way.... even if it’s inverted
  21. Looks like a guy could buy some kydex, soften it and form those around a piece of thin plywood fairly easily. Might have to give that a shot. I’m tired of trying to dig my seatbelt out from between my trim wheel and fire extinguisher
  22. Attached is what my Instructor gave me during my PPL. Hope it helps. Completion of ICAO Flight Plan.pdf
  23. It was a US registered Plane N7771M. Purchased in Nov 1974, and exported in Dec 1975. I didn't pay much attention to the dates on the books, but now realize I"m missing the first journey log, and the rest of the books are intact from date of Import. FWIW, Here's what a new Mooney M20F cost in Nov of '74
  24. All the FAA CD gave me was the original bill of sale, registration application, and the letter of cancellation when it was exported to Canada. Nothing as far as log books.
