Garmin GTX345DR - Diversity for Canada, Sell / Trade
Kejidog replied to Aerodon's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
No need to be talking to ATC. Just within the airspace. I tested it again with a short flight on Jan 9 I had no trouble passing all the required fields 0% failures on a short 35 min flight at 4500’ on the OP’s topic if I were buying the Lynx is a damn fine piece of equipment. I’d recommend getting that for anyone interested -
I have owned a 172G and now a 182E. I have ferried a Grumman AA5 and flew in a M20C. I have to say the 172 And now the 182 are the largest feeling cabins to me. The straight sides and the distance between the front seats on my 182 has allowed me to put a centre console that is at least 4” wide between the two seats. Before I had this installed my son who is much more agile could climb into the back seats between them. The next is the Grumman for size it worked for me and another pilot to fly from Alberta to NS last summer. It felt tight but the shoulder width was manageable. The M20 does not work unless one of us is all the way back. i am a svelte 6 feet and 230 lbs athletic.

Garmin GTX345DR - Diversity for Canada, Sell / Trade

I am a lurker here and thought I’d add to the conversation. This is a test page that you can submit a flight for a test within Canadian airspace. I have submitted a few of my flights and lo and behold my non diversity Garmin GtX 335 with the blade on the bottom of the fuselage of a 182 has passed on every flight i looked at. https://www.navcanada.ca/en/air-traffic/space-based-ads-b/public-ads-b-performance-report.aspx i would not worry about complying too soon most every aircraft in canada is still using mode C. They’ll be busy chasing these owners for years to be concerned about a transient aircraft -
Hi. I haven’t been on here in a long time but finding this thread has me thinking that I should adjust my KFactor. I have a G4 with FF in my 182. It always reads that I have less fuel in the unit than i actually have in the tanks. I mostly use it for back up planning. I’d rather it be that way than the other. Looks like i have some number crunching to do.

So sorry to hear. Glad you and your family were safe. I hope it will not scare your kids from flying going forward. Nobody expects something like this to happen. The shock must be tremendous.

I am sending an offer by PM -
Wow. Maybe we can close this topic now? From being offended by typed symbols to calling people out for typing them. No more need to reply. I was just asking about buying a plane and advice on prebuys. Have a great day and keep flying B

I know. I had already started dreaming of possibilities though. And the future fun to be had.

Thoughts on purchase of M20C?

Posted above before I read all the pages. Congrats on your plane. I am jealous. -
Thoughts on purchase of M20C?
Kejidog replied to Raptor05121's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Canadian salaries must be higher. Firefighter here in Nova Scotia here and bumping up over 90G. I waited to start lessons until i was steady in my position and can't fathom anything on 30 g a year. Although our tax levels are higher here in canada and most everything is more expensive, i wouldn't even consider motorcycles as a hobby on 30 g a year and i was worried about a 23 g mooney. -
Wow. That escalated quickly. I will tell everyone that I chose to pass on the purchase. I understand the complexities of purchase much better now from my week of reading. The sophistication of the plane. The distance from me, the added worry of non moving insurance until i build hours, and the 15% socialism fee (HST) we have in my home province on aircraft purchases, leaves me a bit short in the follow through. I can't reasonably ask a seller to hold off on other buyers for me until I could get out to see it mid-June. If i passed he may have missed a sale. If you love something, blah blah blah. Also a a very experienced owner of a very expensive RG piper had a gear collapse on the runway while we were on final yesterday. Had to use a different runway,. It was my first landing! So that made me think twice. If a high time commercial guy can make a mistake or have a failure(not sure which) what about a student owner with no moving coverage- ouch. My time in a Moony will come. For sure. I have joined the Piper OH and the Cessna OG's now to look around. Not as friendly or as helpful so far as this site. Thanks for the comments and all the advice Maybe a 172 or a cherokee is a good start For a Beginner! Lol what is funny though is the guys who told me i was crazy for thinking about purchase seem to be the most disappointed. Funny how that is Bruce

I checked them out. Would they operate this service for a canadian buyer?
-
Yves. Yes I joined copa to take advantage of the rates. I don't qualify as a gold level due to being a student. I got a non moving quote for it and with liability and passenger coverage it is $700. Per year. I can qualify for gold when i get my ppl and build hours. I would probably just park the plane till i get more training hours in on the 172 i am flying. Then move into the mooney after i become more competent. I am performing stalls now and have mastered slow flight last week so I am moving on towards my goal hour by hour. I figure if the sale moves along as i hope it will, mid june is a date i may make for delivery which will allow me to have more training hours under my belt. I have added 4 more hours to my training time since I first posted this thread. I appreciate all the help and advice. Medical is done and ground school is going to be completed by end of may. Pstar test shoud follow shortly. My CFI will probably be doing my ferry home and that will give me lots of hours in the plane to do most of the flying (hopefully) although the hours can't be logged as training from what he's been told on a cross country ferry. I am not sure why. You are in Gatineau? I am coming up your way in may for a conference. I would love to buy you a coffee and pick your brain on all things mooney and eastern Canada flying. Send me a PM if you are interested. I may even try to take a lesson while i am up there if the local schools have anything else besides a 172 to train on. Thanks Bruce

Slowly meeting all the Canadian members.

I am going to Bump this as I am purchasing a 69 M20G, I think. I am going to fly it back to Nova Scotia and would like to hear from some Owners here in Canada. I posted a should I buy post to the vintage owners list and had a few replies. Hope to hear from some local owners. thanks -
I have looked in BC but Canadian system is not as easily checked here. We need to look in every province for any leans.

No not my confusion. Just my bad summary. He had a stone chip in one blade and replaced the prop under insurance. My guy doing the PPI pointed it out to the owner. It was happened in 2007. The owner seemed to be unaware of the issue. He's said he's having it addressed before the sale. Or i may get it done by the guy who inspected it. And maybe take the cost off the purchase price. Thanks for reading and following my ramblings.

Well i have heard from the AME i had looking at the plane. It is a bit of an eye opener for me. I found that there was a service bulletin # 475 that deals with a propeller replacement he had done several hundred hours ago due to a stone chip. It has become an AWD 2004-10-14. A few exhaust gaskets leaking and a rocker cover gasket and perhaps the aileron rods. I have been reading up on these here and would make a decision when I get out there. And the tail hinge bolt seems worn the compressions seemed good 80 75 75 and 80 so that sounds promising. I am looking at a few hours before a major, hopefully And some other things that sort of stuck out to him. I have tried search and have come up blank on a manual for this model. anyone have a thought on this. Also any info on the G would really be appreciated. Thanks
-
Eastern? Clarence do you know of any AME's further east than Ontario? Nova Scotia potential owner here and looking for some expertise on the East Coast of Canada. Really learning a lot from your posts and hoping to purchase the aircraft i found out in sechelt. Having a PPI done this week. Perhaps flying out to participate in an annual then to make a purchase offer. I appreciate your comments on here. Bruce.

It was great speaking with you Lee. You really raised my confidence. I am still waiting to hear back from the AME on the ppi. Hopefully he has some good advice for me. Thanks everyone on here too. I am really learning a lot. I like the avgas sump idea. I figure i will do that one just to clean out the sump.
-
GHIJ thanks. I am really trying to get my head around operating costs and some info on Canadian Annual averages and the like. I would be very interested in the crosswind capabilities of the retractable gear as well. I am in Halifax but am taking Lessons in Debert CCQ3. I know Greenwood well I spent a few summers there in Air Cadets. And now my oldest son is going there this summer. Also the prop maintenance schedules and the like

Lycoming IO-360-A1A oil film

Great Tip! and I don't even own a plane yet. I love learning new things I wish I knew this for working on old motorcycles and VW's -
Yes But would you be having as much fun? my motto is " You can live rich, or die rich`` or better yet `` you can`t repossess a good time``
-
Tom, we are two boys, 13 and 11 me and my wife, and the dog Bixby! lol , not that the dog goes anywhere with us in the car so no chance of her in my plane unless she's in a crate. My oldest is in Air Cadets (great Program!) and wants to fly for a career. Hence me learning and looking to buy. I look forward to many years of future travel to exotic locations...... In answer to all the people with the advice on training I appreciate all the honest replies. It is great to get an educated opinion from owners. If I do purchase I would not in all likelihood touch the controls on landing until I had lots of solo hours in a club 172 under my belt. I would be right seat in it all the way across Canada if it meets my inspection and pre buy annual. I have a co-worker who is an instructor with some hours in type to land it when we would be coming across I would gain valuable hours just ferrying it home this would be after I have soloed, but I would expect to do most of the flying to build up my hours . I would not solo it until I was totally confident in my flying abilities and checked out in it. Kinda' like teaching my wife to drive a Manual transmission when we were first married, I went out and rented to save my new VW's Transmission. It seems that I am impulsive in my decisions and want to move forward quickly but I am not BS crazy when it comes to my or my family's life. I have always had a desire to own and fly my own plane and have stewed on this for several years before taking the plunge. The Mooney seems in all my looking and dreaming to be a nice long range comfortable aircraft for my needs. It is the cost of this one that really caught my eye I am getting insurance quotes, tie down fees, hourly gas, and maintenance costs to make my decision an educated one. And I am practicing burning 100 dollar bills as a pre buy exercise to train myself on costs! But at the end of the day I would like to own. My problem is that I want to own today! It is the high hours that scare me on the engine not the complexity of the aircraft I would have plenty of time in it before I set out alone in it. Thanks for all your Replies and I will keep you all posted on my scheming Bruce

Yes. The joy of having a convertable peso dollar. It allows our neighbours to eat our lunch! Lol. Just kidding. Yes it is listed by a dealer. The photo is not even the same airframe though. but my contact has been with the owner, as far as i know. This is all been a learning experience for me, I was hoping to gain more airtime before i purchaced but if this is a solid airframe with an engine that will make it home. I would be quite happy. If it sits while i train I can probably eat most of the rental fees but after hopefully having time in it all the way across i may really only ever want to fly it! As I said after looking at a few piper's and the grumman in the same price range of my buget, the M20 really stands out. But I have yet to see it in person If anyone knows a good Mooney mechanic in BC drop me a message. I was hoping to act as fast as i can to move towards ownership. I have seen and sat in a mooney when i was in my early 20's and always liked the size and look/feel of this style of aircraft. I have yet to fly in one and I think it should be as expected. I am so new to avation as a hobby it is all a novel experience to me. Currently I am working out a spreadsheet of costs and expences. Looking on here has really taught me a lot already. Thanks for the good info and the helpful replies. Ps Kejimkijuk or Keji is a national park here in Nova Scotia. I had a black lab years ago named that. Great dog with a great name. I was going to use my honda motorcycle's name VFR800 but figured using a flight handle was a bit much for a guy with only 5 hours of training!
