M20 short body guide, gotchas, and mission advice

I got certified to land at st barth in my E model. Look that up as an example of what can be done. -
M20 short body guide, gotchas, and mission advice
65eTurbo replied to DartMan's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Depends on the strip and the obstacles, operating weight in and out, etc. Do you bnb fly many short grass strips yourself? -
Cool! That's exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. BTW, what kind of turbo system is on your 201?
-
Last night after landing I noticed my fuel pressure gauge was pegged. Turning the boost pump off brought it back to 30 psi but 30 seconds after flipping the pump on again the gauge suddenly pegged again. Fuel flow shows a spike as it pegged but then flow comes back to normal as the fuel injection system does its job. Any quick ideas on the cause? I'm assuming there is some kind of relief valve in the pump that is sticking. Haven't looked at this parts manual yet.

Sport Aviation article on sound control.

What makes the biggest difference for me is engaging the Turbo charger. Because I have a manual Wastegate rajay, I can tell the difference when the wastegate closes, and it is slightly quieter if I can close it all the way. So, I like to run 2400 rpm wastegate closed and LOP and 27 inches or under for cruise, somewhere just under 10 gph. The 201 windshield seemed to help a bit too. I think I'll go for the ultralight weight carpet if the wool won't help. -

As a general gist, I wonder if covering all the interior panels with porous fabric would reduce reflected acoustics, and if cloth seats reduce noise relative to leather. Also, it makes me think heavy wool carpeting might help noise from floorboards and firewall relative to the lighter weight stuff. Anyone have any data on that? In air cooled engine cooling, sealing every tiny hole leads to much better performance. I wonder if interior sound is the same way, heavy carpeting and cloth covered interior surfaces providing a noticeable benefit. -

Deb sent me the following, which was exactly the article I remembered. I wish more Sport Aviation articles were this technical and data rich: “About 20 years ago there was a great article in sport aviation where a bunch of sound deadening experiments were conducted. It had a ton of great data on what actually works. Anyone familiar with that article or know how to find it?” Taming the noise, EAA April, 2005? http://acversailles.free.fr/documentation/08~Documentation_Generale_M_Suire/Bruit/Taming_the_noise.pdf -

I used to work in the automotive industry about 20 years ago. Back then IMO that tar based sound insulation stuff was placed in patches were would most chains the resonant frequency of a piano to move it outside Will be audible or physically offensive frequency ranges. We also used shredded recycled fabric based flocking in some areas To absorb sound or prevent squeaks. The article I'm talking about had interesting data out a bunch of different techniques. To think I recall some techniques being effective without being particularly heavy. -

Thanks for the pirep. Yeah, I think the article found that, but interior surface finish is mattered. -

Thanks! I'm guessing 20 years. I know, I have had to adjust my time estimates, that's why I guessed 20 years. Is there an online sport aviation guide somewhere? I probably have the issue buried somewhere, but doubt I could find it. I'm doing my interior and I remember some interesting details came from that testing, like surface finish mattering and such. -

True, all else being equal and the ideal plane being available, an extra 10:k gets you an F With a higher useful load been a little more Empty weight on the same wing. For another 100 AMU you you should buy a Bonanza, that has an appropriate airframe for an engine that length and weight not add another foot to create a Mooney that can't land in grass. If you already have a short bodied airplane sorted out the way you'd like, this back seat mod lets you carry 4 passengers comfortably for short trips or sightseeing or 2 adults in front and 2 kids in back plus bags for travel. My thought with the extended baggage compartment is whether moving the battery to the front and eliminating the weight of the step would allow you to carry your additional higher volume lighter weight items in a far back tail cone space. Keep in mind that I already have a little extra weight up front from a Turbo charger. Also keep in mind that my kids will be relatively light weight for another number of years. My inquiry here was the find out of anybody had seen a modification to increase that rear baggage volume on any mooney,, regardless of weight and balance issues. We could also add a miraculum bobweight at the back of the tailcone to resolve the issue.( A little aerospace humor therefore you).

Tell them to reach out to the previous owner, Paul lowen. I'll dig up the paperwork.

Check out the pictures.

Now that I think of it, why not extend the hat rack back a station and drop the bottom down a foot with a honeycomb floor? Then, a slide down door on the front for crashworthiness. Also, relocate the battery to the C location for CG.
-
Toe room arms on front seats and back seat relocation and flip fold mod from LASAR about a decade ago. I can sit back there comfortably.
-
Any STCs for that you can refer me to?

Anyone ever thought of doing a separate baggage compartment in the tailcone? Putting w and b aside, I have a short body with a lasar stc that moves the back seat rearward 10 inches. It leaves me with little baggage space. I've read of extended baggage mods but that requires cutting the bulkhead, sealing, etc. It occured to me that there is already the battery access door. Why not build a box above the battery with a door latch and create a baggage compartment under field approval? Even an E could relocate the battery up front for balance. Thoughts?

How about a pirep on that interior project? Particularly the ovation upper panel conversion. I've often wondered about salvaging a newer interior to retrofit.

Was googling Mooney E model to show a friend and came across this: https://www.oldmodelkits.com/index.php?detail=33427 Wish they still made them.

How do the short bodies fly?
65eTurbo replied to FloridaMan's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Weight on the wing. Short bodies only put 2575 max on a wing that is asked to carry much more on bigger models. Also, less mass in every moment of inertia makes it much more responsive. Even when I fill my 90 gallon tanks and get close to gross, I'm shocked by how ponderous my little butterfly feels. Also, I'm comfortable on 2000 ft grass strips. Mid bodies do that comfortably? Only other thing is that the lttile 4 up against the firewall sure seems louder and buzzier than the mid bodies I e ridden in. Using a little less power in cruise sure helps that.
