See the disclamer, touches so far aft only belly and flap supports scraped, worked for me. -
Dump fuel via fuel strainer in an emergency?
drbob replied to nickmatic's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Gear problem: Long final, stop engine, level the prop, trim, retract flaps when abt 5-10' off, progressive FULL aft yoke as it settles, considerable ground effect so, long float & touchs at abt 35- 40 mph +, smooth grass is best, prop, flaps untouched. Then the real fun begins, now how to get this birthday up cake off the ground! disclamer don't try this at home, for professionas only your results may vary! Just one technique. drbob -
They did beef up the cases, the Lyc WD is a beefed up ND, so, for their effort, more cracking--statistically, Lycoming GPU's IIRC didn't have this problem, but then again, they didn't have large rotating masses creating huge precession forces in THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE. Just my opinion, see disclamer-- drbob please note that past performance is no guarantee of future performance & or results, so your on your own!

Search: LPM case cracks, apparently both 4&6 cyl WD concentrates stresses around #2 more than ND. Somewhere it was stated that of 10 cases cracked 7 = WD 3= ND. Would MT prop help with powerful L-R pression stresses? Good question
-
Vans [VAF Forums] has some good discussion abt. this. search: Lycoming smiley crack # 2 cyl. flange. apparently WD crack more than the ND even though their heavier & stronger. Wiliamsport probably has a very good idea why this would be.

Make sure that grounding is as it should be, next up would be electrolytics[P.S.]. drbob

Inhofe to head Senate Environmental Committee-

But, but, them rules, they're only for the little people, didn't Leona Helmsley set us straight on that. -
Don: My bad, I thought this was a sealed RG [Recombinant gas] battery, not flooded. Concord sells (RG) as Aerobatic, mountable in any positionand & vibration resistant, due to fatigue resistant plates. My faiure was due to recombinant catalyst not returning the H & O2 back to thecells, solar recombinants also have this problem, which Hyra-caps help to solve. Adding water reversed this. drb
-
Open it up' if it's dry inside vibration didn't cause that.
-
Don: Concord: When these 1st came out they were/are highly regarded (compared to what they replaced) so I got one. Eventually it failed --too soon I thought, so opened it up, completely dry inside. Added distilled and it came back. Don't think in it's location near the cylinder head, it was ever very happy --very hot enviorment. Might be worth a look, probably dry inside. 2C's worth. drbob

InterAv Alternator conversion troubleshooting
drbob replied to danb35's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
InteAv: Appears to be Motorola (12V) # A12N-600 55A N grd. alternator these are/were ubiquitous in marine and farm tractors in years past--parts available! Common V regulator was Motorola PN R2CM1 12V controller. InterAv regulator appears to be Motorola 8RD 2023 12V three wires Gnd (-)Blk, Fld Grn and Reg red (+). My notes say when the 0-500 ohm trim pot fails voltage then goes out of spec. (the red&blue wires go to it) Before PlanePower or any others this was- I think -the STC'd alt conversion. Heavy & needs a reverse cooling fan, but robust and long lived. The trim pot can be seen in the potting medium just above the lower single mounting hole, the overvolt relay prob. proprietary. Just my 2C's worth, not bad alts, just older rugged units! drbob -
IIRC: M20C was certified CAR 3 So may be some wiggle/room here for '66 E , later to FAR 25.853 (fire). John Schneller (OEM Boeing) makes carpet and flight deck-matting ICW FARs & so would others. Your friend may have access to Schneller as they supply the transportation industry (bus, train etc). Not sure if confor foam is approved, but I think it was used in the shuttlre. Kay Metzler also provided foam. Andrew Muirhead provided leather to BS6608. FAR compliant materials are available, need to look, issues of fire safety are more recognized now. Used the flight deck material inlew of carpet, fits better around the seat tracks, easier to clean, continuous front to back. Hoping other MS'ers chime in here! drbob

A MS poster Taraka, is close IIRC A&P IA so try him, close to Seattle.

Difference between M20B and C models?
drbob replied to StinkBug's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
No experience myself but, knew someone who flew one 20+ yrs from new, Somehow the inner wing laps were a problem and had to be reworked. Also he thought the 2 into 2 tubes (twin muffler) system was much better than the later H&W system. When Petersen attempted to Autogas STC the C model, he couldn't pass the heat-soak test, due to over temp in the carb (fuel percolation). Maybe the B could have, with the hot mufflers down & away from the carb area in the cooling air tunnels. drbob -
With respect to the M20C, the aft compartment is 22" X 36"wide anteriorly, tapering to 29.5" W aft. Apprx.dimension of hat rack this combined with the stock baggage-floor & with rear seat folded to rest on aft spar gives a space of around 60" by 38" (to tapers to 29.5 aft). A folding seat was also engineered by (Ray Cole)---the project lead on the L.E.M. IIRC. Engineering drawings, calcs, & approved data were provided. F.Seat = Hexcel HC/nomex composite. I'd like to see more of these up-grades 337s etc. discussed here on MS, probably lot more out there, just adds to the MS brain trust. drbob
-
M20C: Yes I have this, slightly different but- 337 with Aero engineer drawings, & approved data, HC-carbon fiber floor, aft relocated bulkhead etc. CG is critical & weight limited due short body. drbob

M20C<Aft battery repositioning C,D,G is covered by STC SA 00941AT (unfortunately a dead STC) So: would anyone have access to that paper work, I and my DER would like to see whats involved, prob.not much as Mooney relocated the battery aft in the '64 M20E models(SNs 26101-469) they also relocated the oil cooler but thats another story. Helps with changing the CG. drbob

Rich: Did this AC have S.B.M20-152A complied with? Cabin heat valve appears to be much newer, M20 parts manual pg.162 fig 64, item #22. This might explain the newer style heat control valve, fuctions the same just bigger heat dump hose to the lower RH cowl area. just some thoughts drbob
-
Carpet: IIRC FAR 25.853 is whats involved here. Formerly Boeing Surplus Kent sold remnants and materials such as this. Schneller Inc. provided some of the carpets & flight deck matting Kay -Metzeler Ltd.- foam cushioning, and Andrew Muirhead & Son [Glasgow] provided Leather. One large hide was around $150, prob 1 1/2 hides would do one Mooney. Some of the floor matting was foam-backed some not, used the unbacked with wool carpet cut to fit on top. At the time some of the wool carpet was spendy maybe $50-$70/yard IIRC Occasionally these materials come up for sale --- keep checking. Think I gave around $1-$2 / yard then for the wool. Just adding to the MS brain trust here drbob

Looking to North Texas AC sales --- Mooney N767DP This M20E sports the Open top [F style] cooling baffle system, Mooney changed to it when they eliminated the dog house system, it also shows relocated oil cooler, something Mooney also did, when they gave up on having the OC mounted to the low pressure side of the baffle system. Lowen STC'd the OIl cooler change. Believe Mooney IIRC eventually moved it back as well. Not sure who did the baffles, possibly just duplicated the OEM ones from latter F(E?)the lower parts appear to be whats common to the dog house! Earliest M20E's were M20C's with relocated battery and Angle valve head & injection sys & sump ND IO360. Possibilities for similar M20C baffle sys to just use slightly different side (head) baffles. Looking for input from the MS brain trust here, Any Mooney Spacer's using the aft battery relocation STC (Mod Squad) ? just some baffling observations drbob

M20J Muffler shot - AME says its because I fly LOP
drbob replied to andrem's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Maybe Weber can get their Chinese grills made with Inconel parts, how cool would that be? drbob -
Just to add to the MS brain trust, what would that number be? This would be a Mooney sourced & approved part. drbob

drbob replied to andrem's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Yes, Inco (Inconel) is branded and owned by Special Metals Corp. --originally developed for the Whittle (jet) in the '40s. mostly Ni and Chrome. The HD valves for the 0360A, --fairly heavy and non magnetic except for the 1 3/8" near the tip, prob how the sodium was included to the valve. Inco 625 --- the weldable one & Burns & IIRC Wolfe aircraft make the tubes, indeed 5 new head pipes would be optimal. The inconel sheet i'v worked with is non manetic, heavy and quite tough. An associate & fellow Mooney driver is [ DER] and we work on Mooney related projects. drbob -

drbob replied to andrem's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Anyone aware of Inconel (625) being used for replacemant headpipe/muffler replacemant parts? Newer cars use it, IIRC Mooney uses 321 SS where the Lead, heat & vibration degades -with subsequent cracking. Smith aAerostar Piper PA 602,use Inconel in their exhaust system, Lycoming also use Inconel/sodium for HD (parallel valve) 320/360 supercharged exhaust valves. I asked a large AC exhaust sys rebuilder if this could be used at (my) xtra expanse, NOPE was their reply. Saw a relatively low time extensive/expensive system OH by this same shop cracked before 50Hrs in service! Hoping to recruit comments from the Brain trust here! Comments--- drbob -
How high can you take a M20C?
drbob replied to Oscar Avalle's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
M20C: around FL 21: depends on pressure temp etc. Need O2, best to have GEM for agressive leaning & Vernier mixture control, AP to help wings level. IIRC OAT -40, MP +- 16" IAS around 85-90. Not reccomending this- just saying. In coffin corner, so controls lethargic, stability iffy. drb
